IMSA 2017

Just watched the IMSA Long Beach race. I love this series, but that traffic jam at the end was bogus. Terrible way to lose a race. I hate to be a bandwagoner but I am a fan of the Wayne Taylor Racing team and drivers since I seen them at the Rolex in January, they are hooked up right now. Hope to see the IMSA Road America race.

I read that they couldn't throw a full course yellow since the overall winner had already taken the checkered flag, which seems like such a strange rule to me. So it was deemed an "accident-in-progress" and a local yellow only. I really don't get it.

By doing that they destroyed the race in one or two other categories...

Terrible circumstance with that final corner, though. An incident in the final turn in Long Beach is probably not what they had in mind when they were writing that rule.

I have to say, the next person that suggests NASCAR or IndyCar take a race away from TMS and run at COTA oughta be strapped to a chair and forced to watch every race in that circuit's brief history until they come to their senses. This place somehow gets snoozier every year.

They need to cut out turns 7,8 and 9. That's one too many S-turns and the cars look clumbsy coming out of T9.
And then also 12,13,14 or 15,16,17,18. There is no reason to have both of those features right next to each other. I kind of like the carousel, but it isn't good for passing. You could also just cut out turns 14,15,16 and have T13 lead right into the carousel.
Either way, this track has no rhythm.

I think they just threw **** together and thought it would be cool. The carousel is supposed to be Turn 8 from Istanbul, but it's so small it's extremely watered down.

Cant wait for Sundays race mainly cause I know it wont get rained out.
Starting to get a little bored with the Taylor domination. Both GT classes will put on
a great show.

I'm not quite sold on PR1 or JDC being able to give them a run for their money but ESM look really strong so far. Six in a row would be incredible.

Well another hole to dig out for the Taylors.

Just turned on the race what happened to the Taylor boys?
Pla ran the #52 a little wide through turn 1 at the start and damaged the #10, then the #10 clobbered a barrier after it couldn't turn up through the esses. Took about ten minutes to make suspension repairs.

The #2 and #52 looked great but the #52 has some sort of fueling issue and the ESM got clobbered by Boris Said in the Sun Energy machine so Cadillac will win anyways most likely.

Still produced nice finishes in all the classes. All my picks were blown to pieces however.

What made the Glen so interesting is that the Miller Oreca Gibson was bang on the pace and legitimately fighting for the win. This tells me IMSA is getting the BOP a little closer. Even the Mazda was pretty quick. The Nissans could have also very well won the race except Sharp tangled with a GT and tore the car up. Essentially, any of the P2 cars could have won. We still need more cars, but at least what we have now is pretty competitive.

Still, I believe the Oreca had a bit of an edge. The difference was that Barsosa was killing it in traffic and Steve Simpson (in the Oreca) was being noticeably more careful. Hard to blame him for not wanting to throw a good result away being too greedy. That team is still new to the class and they have plenty of time to grow into winners. They are already contenders.

The Glen just drives home what I think about the DPI and P2 cars being the real future of the sport. The only problem is that the ACO and FIA will never allow it. The P2 grids in the WEC are really packed and if they would just cultivate that and turn it into the premier class, maybe even open it up to SPI rules, we would really have something. IMSA had balanced the DPIs to the P2 really well, so no one would have to replace anything. teams could either run the cars in P2 trim with the Gibson motor, or in DPI with manufacturer engines and body kits. The answer is so simple that you just have to wonder how proud or dumb (or even both) the FIA and ACO really are.

The whole BOP thing gives me a headache. I just wish they could get to 16 or 18
consistent prototype entries week end week out.

The whole BOP thing gives me a headache..

We've always had BOP, even if we haven't always called it that. In the GTP days there was a weight or air restrictor adjustment every race. The only fair way to balance out different kinds of motors is like they did in Group C: Give them a set amount of fuel and they either make it work or they don't. Then all we ever heard about was people complaining about fuel economy runs, but at least it was fair and it was competitive.

I'de like to see IMSA and the WEC keep the current DPI and P2 car, and have them all run run production based 5 liter V8s. They would be fast as hell, economical and the manufacturers could showcase the stuff they sell for the road. Everybody runs the same weight and if the cars get too fast, everyone gets the same size air restrictor. That way the winners are not unfairly penalized. Same rules for everyone. Make it work or go home.

I just wish they could get to 16 or 18consistent prototype entries week end week out.

They have that with the P2 cars in WEC.

Remember that in the first year of the Daytona Prototypes they only had three or four of them at most races, but then that grew to where we had about 20. It takes time to build something good. DPI is a very solid foundation. We just have a really crappy economy right now and anyone coming in will have to buy all new stuff. As the economy improves I am sure we will see more new teams and it should snowball from there. DPI is such a good platform I'm sure we will get more manufacturers as well.

The Ligiers were far and away the class of the field. Both the ESM Nissans and the stock PR1 Ligier were awesome all weekend. The ORECA is a great car as well and I think the Dallara could be a solid one too if someone decided to race a stock one. The Riley is the only real dud of the four. Depending on how Mosport goes we may not even have to change the BoP. Mazda and ESM are rolling out updates before final homologation too.

I think next year we'll see:

+2 from Penske ORECA-HPD
+1/+2 from Joest ORECA-Audi sounds increasingly more likely
+1 from BAR1 moving up from PC

Then someone else from GTD or Performance Tech from PC could move up too, and maybe that Starworks program that is seemingly always "95% there" will actually materialize at some point. LOL

Yeah, I forgot about them. That and I slept through part of the race. Been working too hard.

The ORECA is a great car as well............

That's why I was surprised to see it up front. At Lemans the Orecas absolutely and savagely slayed them. Same thing at Silverstone and Spa. It makes you wonder what that team found to be able to turn up the wick like that.

........... and I think the Dallara could be a solid one too if someone decided to race a stock one.

Yeah, but it's not a Cadillac! That's what my dad always used to say!

The Riley is the only real dud of the four.

With a sportscar pedigree like theirs, I sure didn't see than coming. It's hard to believe they won't eventually get it right.

Depending on how Mosport goes we may not even have to change the BoP. Mazda and ESM are rolling out updates before final homologation too.

If they all just ran the same size production motors BOP would be a thing of the past. Like you say, we've got four really good, fast chassis. If they all ran pretty much the same kind of motor the competition would be like a feeding frenzy.

I hope the Nissan update includes a more elegant nose. The thing looks like a whale shark!
