Interest builds around possible changes to NASCAR schedule

Ya know, I historically have disliked street courses.

I sat there Sunday and realized Roval turns 1 through 5 aren't much different from a street course. Maybe I need to reassess.
Last year when they ran the Roval as a replacement race a number of the IMSA guys said it was a street course on steroids. Margin for error, or lack thereof, is pretty similar.

I've watched a number of street races that the Pinty's series put on. Good stuff. There was some serious passing under braking going on

Yep that’s a great track.

Speaking of that, wish the Canadian Tire Series would head over to Alaska Raceway Park like everyone wants, haha

100% on point. Thankfully though it has a solid amount of run-off which saves the cars from total carnage. But yeah that Turn 1 is a lot like Toronto

IMSA's problem with running street courses are the number of classes they race and speed differentials between the cars.
Running all the cars in the same class like Pinty's or hopefully Cup is a different animal.

I wasn’t under the impression they had a problem with it. It was a GT-only race.
you forget this one? Another thing, IMSA cars for the most part are more fragile than an Xfinity or a Cup car. Watching the Pinty's races, they can take a lot of punishment and can keep racing

No problem with what you said. I agree.

However NASCAR has to balance tradition with also moving forward. I personally do not care for the Firecracker 400 race being in August. I don’t care for the Brickyard being at the RC. I personally think they should keep the Clash at Daytona & make the All-Star Race rotate around to places like the Coliseum and make the All-Star race the gimmick show like it always has been.

Not easy decisions to make. I think NASCAR is doing a good job with the schedule (could use a few more standalone races), but the 550 package and playoffs still kinda suck.

North Wilkesboro and Rockingham aren’t walking through that door, but they would be great standalone races if they’re given 10 million to fix these places up.
They’re already looking at moving the Brickyard back to the oval. I wouldn’t be surprised if they decided to rotate between the oval and RC in a couple of years.

I wish I knew what I’m supposed to be arguing about. I was talking about the 2020 Charlotte race.
Didn't think there was any arguement. I'm talking about the differences between IMSA cars and Nascars. I happen to think The Nascar's can put on a decent race on a street course

The new ones will for sure. I think F1 growing helps quite a bit, but at the end of the day this country loves its ovals. I'd really like to see Cup at Eldora, there is simply no reason why that hasn't happened yet. The truck races there have mostly been incredible

Oh, ok. I guess I got confused - their comments were characterizing the track as fun, not bad. I don’t disagree that they can.

Because Tony would need to bring in an extra 10-20,000 seats to get it to 40-50K seats.

They took the truck race away from Tony this year and next. :idunno:

Does Atlanta and Darlington both need TWO races? I say move one of them to Rockingham/North Wilkesboro and the other one to Chicago/Kentucky/new Nashville Fairgrounds.

Rockingham isn't coming back, at least not for Cup.

Nobody showed up even during the boom era. In an era where nearly every other track was selling out 100k seat grandstands, Rockingham struggled to even draw half of that.

If they are gonna add a street course, they should probably replace it with an existing road course on the schedule IMO. They are approaching where over 20% of the schedule are road courses and that is outside of my personal preference. I think moving towards adding 20% more short track action would be a more entertaining route.

I also absolutely agree with getting away from visiting a venue twice in a season if the product is stale there.

Open both the oval and the road course and set rules for joker laps.

Ok but the Truck crowds were actually pretty good and getting 40-60K is the norm in 2021 at most tracks.

Tracks like North Wilkesboro, Rockingham, Kentucky or Iowa have a place IMO. North Carolina has approved funding for improvements.

No reason to be at even Darlington, Richmond, Atlanta, Kansas (and or Texas though they probably still get 50K) twice a year if they aren’t going to sellout.

Trois-Riveres in Canada near Montreal looks cool, has history, and not much is needed to slot it in there.

Disappointed that Denver, Colorado can’t get something going.

The Truck Races weren't sellouts, though. They couldn't even sell out a 35k grandstand.

If the market really wanted Cup back, both races would have sold out.

Not sure what world you lived in thinking those Truck races were gonna sell out at 35K but I’m done with this

It’s not just a market issue lol. Darlington didn’t exactly light the world on fire in May. If you are owned by ISC (NASCAR) or SMI you are guaranteed a race.

Rockingham isn't owned by either anymore. It has been owned by Rockingham Properties since 2018, who are not affiliated with either

You said if a track was owned by SMI or ISC that it would be guaranteed a race

Well generally that is how it’s went…… luckily NASCAR is more willing to change things up. Hopefully Nashville Fairgrounds and a few more short tracks will continue to grow onto the schedule.

The CARS Tour dropped the Rockingham race and it’s not on the 2022 schedule. I don’t see NASCAR coming back.

They just had semi truck racing there.

The state of NC was given money to help fix facilities such as North Wilkesboro, Rockingham. The state should work on fixing Hickory & North Wilkesboro for some standalone races and/or SRX and what not.

Fake??https://www.speedsport.com/nascar/n...on-in-government-funding-for-n-c-race-tracks/
I didn't know they were still racing the big trucks. I saw them run at Toledo back in the 80s. Most were running modified 2 stroke Detroits and they sounded great. I remember one hitting the wall pretty hard and the ground shook. They were way faster than you'd expect too. I'd love to see them again.

There's a couple I'm aware of

Could see wilksboro somehow being used by one of NASCAR’s series… likely the dirt idea some have kicked around…

with Rockingham, I don’t think NASCAR goes there again. Just feels like the sport is branching out into new ideas for racing venues(LA Coliseum) as well as possibly entertaining the idea of running street races.

I really think in the seasons ahead many tracks host one race primarily. I honestly think all tracks will just have one date at some point.

I’m surprised even Wilksboro has been rumored as much as it has to be a part of something later on. That’s pretty incredible if that plays out. That would probably be NASCAR’s gift to race fans if they do something later there again

Yeah North Wilkesboro STARTED as a dirt track, so I would love to maybe see the switch to dirt if that’s what they gotta do to maybe get a Cup race back.

Rockingham - hope it gets a race, but I’m not sure what the state of NC has planned.

Probably gonna renovate Hickory & Bowman Gray among others.

I wish Nashville Fairgrounds and the city there would get their **** together. Richmond Fairgrounds must have been dope 30 years ago, lol.

Only want to see Daytona (SS), Talladega, Charlotte, Martinsville, Bristol (move that spring race back to the concrete) hosting two races. I think Richmond is great, but they gotta get their attendance and racing better.

They’re not confident because SMI is still worried about throwing every single bone they can at Texas instead of giving a Texas race to Nashville Fairgrounds or North Wilkesboro.

The politics of how SMI/ISC does things is, unfortunate.

I could see SRX going there depending on what all this millions of dollars in NC money goes towards these race track improvements.

Not at all. North Carolina has been given money to fix up these tracks.
Spend all the money the state wants to flush down the pipes but that doesn't guarantee a top-three series race date. Newer facilities in larger markets haven't been able to get or keep races. NASCAR isn't currently interested in more races in central NC. There are other parts of the country that are underserved.

Spending that kind of money for a single SRX race is a waste of money that could better be spent at a short track that's already operating at a proft. Bownan-Gray, for example, could add an SRX date to its existing weekly schedule.
