"Very shortly after the collision he was still conscious but then he became unconscious. All the time he was breathing alone and it was not necessary to resuscitate him.

Not good, but also not without hope. I don't know if there are any Top Gear fans here, but this is the same type of injury that Richard Hammond had when he crashed the jet powered car. It was a long time before he made a full recovery, but he did it. Hopefully Jules can do the same.
