Jimmie Johnson, Lowes sign 3-year contract extension

Actually looks like Lowes only signed through 2018. Interesting.

JJ to the 5 confirmed

That site is so full of commercials and advertising you can't even read the story.

It makes sense for sponsors to sign short term with teams as with the dollar value of them dropping you wouldn't want to get locked into something you ended up grossly overpaying for as is the situation with the what was paid for broadcast rights.

There you go. Jimmie laying the groundworks for retirement.

3 Year run is perfect for him. Puts him right around the age Gordon retired at.

Must be a tough sponsorship environment whe JJ can't get Lowes to agree on more than a 1 year contract extension.

I think the whole thing started with Monster signing a 2 year deal (with options) to sponsor the entire series for about 20 million per year. That had to get boardrooms and marketing departments attention as if the whole series is worth 20 million then what is a car sponsorship worth? When you read that Velveeta signed to be the primary on the 31 car for 175,000 it would be difficult for HMS or SHR to go to another sponsor and ask for 2 or 3 times that amount. As I have said many times Nascar is the king of unintended consequences and accepting the low amount from Monster put downward pressure on individual team sponsors.

I could see that. Though his last extension was only 2 years so probably could have said the same in 2015.

Who knows he might have got together with Chad and they both have decided to divorce after that time. I'm good with three more, I didn't think Johnson was going to be around that long. one more at least JJ

Yeah, please don't pull a DW

I dont think he's at risk of any of that. DW overstayed his welcome by about 15 years. If Jimmie runs past 5 years after his expration day then we'll talk about that prospect. lol

Some would say that he overstayed his welcome by 32 years if you include his 17 years in the booth.

I think Jimmie is being honest when he said he really never focused on records and such.

...until now. I think it's 100% his motivation every day at this point.

I will admit, my (rather weak) source had this rumor wrong months ago and I posted it.

Meh...I don't know about 15, DW retired in 2000 and he was competitive well up into the 90's. 1995 was the first year he really sucked bad, and he never was right after that. Those last couple years when he drove for Travis Carter were just pitiful. I think he burned through all 7 of his past champion provisionals that year if I recall correctly.

You are correct.:booya:

Champion provisional were like savings bonds, may as well use them up. Bill Elliot sold all his as did Lebonte.

So he's definitely gonna pass Jeff's 93. The question is, will he get to 100

He needs 11 more wins to overtake Gordon and that is nowhere near in the bag. I think JJ is better than Kyle Busch but Kyle ain't chopped liver and has gone almost a year without a win.

JJ has a staggering 14% career winning percentage which means he's due for about 5! wins a year. Tied at 2nd behind him among active drivers? Kyle Busch and Brad K, but they only have an 8.5% average. Yeah, it's in the bag.

I hope so as I like JJ's style and the way the 48 team operates. He established himself as one of the GOATS as while back so whatever he does now is gravy.

So many of Petty's wins were so lopsided, showing up at a local short track with a Mopar factory car..taking a gun to a knife fight.

Yet we cant compare Kyle Busch's Xfinity and Truck wins to that with out getting called crazy or delusional or something of that matter.

The difference with that Petty was B.T. and B.X. And I believe that is where the current B.S. we love Kyle comes from some corners. When Petty was coming to your little town he was a big crowd draw and everybody pretty much expected him to win, but he was gone next week racing some where's else. He didn't race half of the season in the same track.

Richard Petty and Kyle Busch are similar in that at many race tracks they showed up with a vastly superior piece to fight vastly inferior competition. A person could go through Petty's wins and take out the the ones that were 50-100 miles but he is beloved and doing that would be considered bad form in many quarters. In Kyle's case the work has already been done as his wins have been segmented by the series he has participated in and that is that. No sanctioning body or sports league harmonizes what a driver or player has accomplished in a lesser series and the first and only time I have ever heard of it is from the Kyle Busch camp. No one ever speaks of Dale Earnhardt's 99 Nascar wins or Mark Martin's 97 because any reputable organization or person is going to be able to clearly delineate the marked difference between what is done in lesser series and the major leagues.

B.T., B.X., B.S.? Sorry if this is common sense but I'm drawing a blank.
