I always thought the same thing about Stewart, than he surprised me by doubling down and become a cup owner. Tony made some statements over the years about just being in cup to make money and wanting to get out asap.
I imagine Haas had a lot to do with his extended stay as an owner.
Either one of them are looking awfully expendable right now. I still think either one of them should have been given the boot at SHR instead of Suarez. We're in Year 3 of the Almirola experiment in the 10 and he doesn't really look like he's showing any growth or improvement.
I really don't think Stewart is doing it just for the money, never have. You would have to be about half nuts to own a racetrack, be a Nascar multi car owner, even more so to start your own Sprint car racing series, but Stewart has been a success at doing all of it.
Top 5 drivers in Nascar don't grow on trees. Both are in the top15 and if you study who is in that group there aren't any slackers.
They may not, but these two haven't really been running as well as they should in that equipment. These aren't exactly newcomers that we are talking about.

I think it was a case of nobody else having been in a car for three months, so Matt’s longer inactivity wasn’t initially as much of a disadvantage. Now I think his inexperience with these packages and the lack of practice are part (not all) of the problem.
Obviously I'm a fan but I don't consider Matt a legend.
It was sad to see, I remember my brother and I laughing at him missing races because we didn’t know....then thanks to the advent of the internet I educated myself real quick on him
Have to agree with you. Everyone should keep in mind that there was more than just a driver change...a couple of people that handled setting up the car in the shop are gone along with the on site race engineer guru. When Kenseth came back to Roush for a partial year, took until Indy for the combination to perk up. Believe the last race of that year would have been more indicative of the performance if Kenseth would have stayed there.

The above average talent is long gone. Matt is only a seat warmer at best now.
One good thing about the No Practice is it makes the crew chief and engineers step up to the plate. There is no chances for change if they goof up. Personally I think most teams are doing quite good with no practice with Kyle B. being the exception.

But the checks keep arriving on time.
There is no upside to not allowing pre-race practice.
He’s getting better results than the 6 year Danica experiment.
It saves teams money.
