Yesterday's NASCAR SC Series Kobalt 400 earned Fox a 4.3 overnight rating, up 4.9% from a 4.1 for last year's race, won by Brad Keselowski.

The NASCAR race on FOX was also the most watched sports event this weekend, beating out Carolina/Duke on ESPN, boxing on NBC and the NBA on ESPN and ABC.

More people are watching because it's Gordon's last season. I bet you the ratings next year will be down at least 10%.

Just surprised. Never thought when I joined this site to see so much negativity. Sure, there are things I wish NASCAR would do/not do, but to generalize that all NASCAR stinks just doesn't make sense. But, that's just me I guess. NASCAR is the only auto racing venue I watch. Don't care for the others.......and surely won't join their Forums just to say that. Anyway, everyone has a right to their opinion, so it's perfectly ok to sound off I suppose.........

Because not everyone has the same opinion about the quality of the NASCAR product these days.

I realize that :) And that's surely peoples right. But goodness...........HOW 'BOUT DEM NASCAR GIRLS!
(oh, no, wait, they mustive fired my favorite, haven't seen her all year........dang NASCAR......shoot)

I was too, lot of misery in the Nascar world eh? all some of them can do is spread pain. I watch all the racing I can and have all my life. Nascarians are a separate breed, separate sub species. I don't want to deny them their pain when they are crying about this or that, just grateful I don't have to be in that rut, life's too short.

Something I don't understand is......if the loss of horsepower is such a big deal, why are they continuing to set track records for the fastest lap? Take away 125 HP and they run FASTER.........who is it that is always saying "you gotta slow down to go fast?" Now, my ONE BIG thing is I am one of only three living people that miss the two car tandem racing. The one year they allowed it was superfantastic. Loved to see two cars running 30th and 31st hook up bumpers and in 3 laps be challenging for the lead........

I learned something there, I didn't think the spoiler on the trunk slowed down the car that much, sure does though. I always thought it was funny in indycar when they had this little bitty wickerbill they could add to the spoiler for more downforce, like what could that little thing do to help. Apparently quite a bit.

Taking away horsepower made the cars too easy to drive. They can flat foot it almost all the way around at most of the 1.5+ mile tracks now.

After getting kicked in the teeth last year it is nice to see Nascar rebounding this year.

I thought the rear spoiler was supposed to take away the downforce and make it harder to flat foot around..I think they missed it. With my 20/20 perfect hindsight, the tests last year if I remember right they let the drivers come up with an even less downforce car that they liked the best out of the test, but they went with this more conservative package. There was plenty of passing at Vegas, just not much for the lead, plenty of cars came from the back to the front all day long.

They should've listened to the drivers but of course NASCAR will never get off their high horse. They think they are always right.

I didn't see any of that last year, I thought it was better racing when they took out the minimum height rule, but the cars got a lot faster. bunch of em were crying about the new chase rule,

they erred on the side of caution, I think we are going to see some really great racing out of this package. Next week at the Phoenix short trackish circuit.

Not sure loss of HP made 'em easier to drive, at least if Vegas is any example. All race long, drivers were complaining that they couldn't get back in the gas on exit. They were slipping and sliding all over the place. Even Kevin was breathing it in the corners. Bet Cousin Carl don't think it's easier to drive, ask Kasey...... :)

A couple of things........I think the continuation of the same network doing the entire weekend of events is helping, good synergies. And secondly, you won't see any sort of blackouts....the amount of money Las Vegas received in TV money for the weekends 2 races will more than make up for the shortfall of people in the seats. The only way it would come to that point is if attendance is less than 50% capacity for at least half of the races. I don't foresee that happening anytime soon.

What I would like to see for Nascar is some slow and steady growth and I am sure they would to. Last year was dreadful for Nascar in the ratings department so good news is welcome.

The negativity sure grabs your attention , and we have more than our share , but when you reread the entire threads you will see that the positive posters outnumber the negative ones ten to one . (me being the one ,usually)

With all the seats being removed from tracks if only 50% of the stands were full the sky would fall. I think the tracks have been smart to remove seats and that attendance is beginning to stabilize.

Attendance is not stabilizing, IMO.
Hence the drastic changes designed to appeal to a new fan base.
I'll have another look see at the stands again in two weeks and provide some accurate feedback.

Attendance at the event is no longer as important as the revenue derived from the TV package.

Appealing to new fans includes television viewers and more importantly, those who wish to follow on broadband platforms. The world has changed.

Viewership increased because less people spent money to sit in the stands and decided to stay home.

The track owners and concession stands will love that.

whelp, you probably need to see a replay of the race on TV, more than once the crowd was shown from the blimp and commented on how big the turnout was. But crepe hanger are going to hang crepe..thought you were signing off after Vegas, wha change of heart?

I was there. I've been there the last 8 or so years. I have a better perspective than does the blimp. How'd the parking lot look from the blimp shot?

The track owners benefit greatly from TV broadcast revenues. They all got a big raise this year.

So big that in most cases, it's now the primary revenue stream.

MmmmmmmHmmmmm
Did the track owners pass the increased revenue onto the track personnel that were laid off?

TV is driving the sport, has for a long time and will continue to increase IMO. But there are always going to be fans who love to go sit in the stands, but they aren't driving the sport like the old days
