Las Vegas ratings increase

welcome to living in the country, cell phones around here are things you want to hit a wall with. It's an urban thing.

Yep. I actually disconnected my cell phone months ago. I use a phone here at the track office and I'll probably get another cell phone here in a few weeks. Internet here is actually pretty solid - as long as it's locked down.

Didn't Gateway and maybe another track decline to hold Nascar sanctioned events for that reason?

Gateway has a Truck race. Someone told me all the numbers but I can't remember what they were. Rockingham has a problem where the fans have never supported the track and never will despite the constant griping on Twitter and the number of tickets they sold probably can't cover the sanctioning fee. I was pissed off when I want to an ARCA race at Rockingham and all these people who said they'd go to The Rock if it reopened weren't there. Same thing for North Wilkesboro, they hosted PASS and Pro Cup races and the number of fans in the stands were probably in the hundreds. I already had my travel plans set to go to a UARA race at North Wilkesboro but the track closed abruptly after the big PASS race there that nobody went to.

I do know around what the numbers are for Modified and K&N races. There's a reason there are only like three tracks on the Northern Mod schedule and why the Southern Mods ran over half their schedule at one track for years and years.

Problem we face in short track racing as well. Most of these tracks are located so far out that cell service is sporadic and broadband internet doesn't exist. We want fans coming to Southern National and posting selfies and pictures on Instagram or whatever and want them on Facebook and Twitter, but cell signal here sucks and I can't just open up the WiFi because then it becomes bogged down and I can't use it.

I have no idea what it costs , but it is a major factor to me when I am choosing a hotel , restaurant or shopping area . I always check for free wi-fi . Anyone who doesn't isn't travelling with a family .I was just looking at hotels in New York City over Easter and some are charging an extra $15-$20 per nite for internet , I was able to find one with free internet and booked it.

I went to a hotel that had "Free WiFi" and then, when I went to log on, it required a password that the friendly hotel clerk never gave me. I was pissed off something fierce.

I don't think NASCAR can do anything to make the at track fan experience any better. I don't care to see a band perform when I go to a race. Maybe have wifi available, although I'm not sure that is feasible with large crowds.
I got a little flak from the family this weekend about my disinterest in the sport. They want me to continue to do the annual LVMS and ACS family get together. For them it's about family and not about the racing. I guess for me, it is also. For me, the tailgating with family and friends is far more enjoyable anymore than is the racing or anything happening in or out of the grandstands. There is nothing that NASCAR can do that in terms of a fan experience that could make me change my mind.
My loss of interest in the sport, primarily, is the constant meddling of the rules, the implementation of (and constant changing) of The chase format, etc. If NASCAR wasn't losing money, overall, then they wouldn't be making so many changes and they wouldn't be desperately looking for ways to keep old fans while attracting new fans. IMO.
In my eyes, a 5th place car, 82 points out of the top spot, was crowned Champion in 2014. For me that is a hard pill to swallow. It's hard for me now to follow a sport that basically has a gimmicky lottery finish to the season. Resetting the points after a race is similar to clearing the scorecards after each round of a boxing match.

The fans wanted a points system that put emphasis on winning. Now, we've got that, and the fans want a system that rewards consistency. WTF?

Honestly , do you think this new system is making Kevin Harvick or Jeff Gordon try harder to win ?

I commented on the other thread that most of these changes have been "gimmicky". Track bar adjustment, cameras in the pit? new chase....good TV. ratings are rising with all the drama..chaos is good I suppose.

I think Kevin Harvick showed last season that's pretty important. Jeff Gordon also showed the same.

So , prior to that , they didn't give a crap and were just riding around collecting valuable points ? I'm missing something .

You've got your mind made up about the Chase as do I. We just look at this differently. I'm not here to convince you of anything. I'm not even sure why I responded really. My thoughts on the Chase remain the same. I never liked it to begin with but finally came to realize it's not going anywhere. The championship hasn't meant much to me since its change in 2004, but of the formats they've implemented since then, I find this one the most entertaining. I don't really need to try to defend that to anyone.

I agree , and I'm ok wih the chase . I just hate to hear drivers denegrated by folks thinking that there was ever a time in this sport that drivers preferred collecting points over wins . There can only be one winner in a race , it has nothing to do with how hard the other 42 tried right ?

it was never preferred to collecting points over wins. BUT how many times have you heard a driver say after a fifth place finish that they had a tenth place car and a fifth place finish was a good one. I think you are/were confused on that statement. Just like guys who are racing for points with a crappy team/car that stay out to lead a lap. Points matter.

I've heard it all . I 've also heard drivers who were disgusted with not winning say sarcastically , "Well , at least we had a good points day! " . Fans who took them seriously and demanded Nascar get rid of the points system were nuts .

The old Chase, drivers were always thinking about "the big picture" and even said it. They'd get out of their car after finishing eighth and talk about how they were content and "had a good points day" and they could have got a few more positions but they didn't want to risk tearing the car up. Now, top-10 finishes don't even guarantee you'll make the Chase and certainly don't guarantee that you'll advance in the Chase.

Drivers might not have more desire to win now than they did before but the Chase is extra motivation and is pushing drivers to take chances they might not take otherwise.

Personally, I think NASCAR's found the perfect balance of winning/consistency. AJ Allmendinger and Ryan Newman were both in the Chase. :idunno:

well, stick n ball are simple games, they are what they are and Nascar was too. But the NASCAR management IMO is letting the networks in their business, and networks will do anything to boost their ratings..anything. I predict more changes to come in the future and we will get the ol...the fans spoke routine B.S. when it is really the networks idea.

This is getting well off-topic but I think there's still more NASCAR can do to make winning more important. Jmo.

Dale Jr. said it in his post race interview last week. Wins are all that matter.

His finish didn't mean anything last week.

You say there's a change in Junior then ok , the new system is working . But is it what he is saying or how he is driving ?

Yep. You have to put your money and support where your mouth is. I really liked the races at the Rock and NW but those are part of Nascar's history and it is time to let them go.

Well it sure lit a fire under Harvick , he never drove like that at RCR . If they put more emphasis on winning he may lap the field .

When I go to a concert or sporting event I want to get to the event as late as possible, see what I came to see and get the hell out. That is just my preference and I realize I am probably in the minority.

I wonder if Nascar actually commissioned a survey/study? I have no problem believing that fans wanted more of a premium placed on race wins but there are several ways it could have been accomplished.

a football type playoff system..wonder who thought of that?

I thought the 2011-2013 chase format was about the best balance we had between winning and consistency. Last year Ryan Newman and Denny Hamlin managed to get to the Championship Four without doing a whole lot of either, while Gordon, Junior, and Keseloswsi were locked out despite both winning and being consistent. At least in the previous chase formats, it was usually the two best drivers left standing going into Homestead, even if they weren't within a couple of points of each other.

I agree, but yeah logic and fairness is the problem....the suits want drama and ratings.

But, when I said drivers are unhappy if they lose and don't talk about good points days, the Chase haters said I was making things up. LOL.

maybe so, but some of us don't pay much attention to what Jr. says. A.J talks a different story. fifth place in the standings is because of good finishes/points. Goldenboy is sitting in a different car and for the most part has been an underachiever compared to the equipment that is under him, he SHOULD be winning races.

You say there's a change in Junior then ok , the new system is working . But is it what he is saying or how he is driving ?
I can't answer that. You can either believe what he says or doubt him. He's the one sitting in the drivers seat saying that his finish didn't mean anything because he didn't win. I believe him. I think he would have said that fourth don't mean sh!t but the last time he said something like that, it cost him. ;)

I guess if Nacar can change the rules to make them race harder then change them again . There's still only gonna be one winner . Junior seemed to think he was tryin pretty hard .:idunno:
