Thats exactly what they had before the playoff. The BCS was a points system that decided who the top 2 teams are. NASCAR and NCAA made the change to playoffs in the same year.
 
Just another change people can piss and moan about. Personally i think it's a good idea maybe adds a little more prestige.

It was just a few years ago that the sanctioning body deemed NASCAR fans too simple to comprehend the points system that had been in place since the 70's, so they changed it so it would be "easier to understand." So much for that...

Money requires someone willing to write the check. Awarding more points doesn't cost NASCAR anything.

Every friggin' lap. They can keep explaining it, but until we see it play out, nobody know what the impact will be on the Chase. They don't have the results of this experiment yet, and they're already talking about changing the variables.

Oh, and it's Daytona 500, Coke 600, Southern 500, and the Bristol night race; NOT Indianapolis.

STICK AND BALL ALERT

The BCS was a bunch of people sitting around pulling two names out based on personal criteria. There was no defined point system, and there still isn't. There's no defined standard a team can meet that will guarantee entry. They're just pulling four names now instead of two.

BCS was a computer selecting process based on a points system and polls and selected 10 teams for 5 bowls. Now its a bunch of people setting around picking 4 teams for a playoff.

Polls ain't points. Polls are opinions. Computer selection based on polls is just juggling opinion numbers. There wasn't (and still isn't) anything a team can do on the field to guarantee it would get a specific position in the rankings.

As soon as the two are combined, objectivity is diluted by subjectivity. But it's not like the 'points' were based on anything subjective in the first place. They were factors the team had no control over, like strength of schedule and defeated opponent's conference.
 
so what exactly led them to conclude the extra points at charlotte was a success? Lower ratings, less social media chatter, or all the highlights from Indy and almost none from charlotte? Maybe tripling the points will change the racing? No? I guess they'll just have to find a bigger carrot to dangle in front of them until they stop stubborning refuse to race side by side.

The race itself I would assume. I know I didnt expect to see a fuel mileage race with 4 stages but it was. Every stage was different and even though Truex had the best car by far, he didn't dominate the whole race. Nothing happened that would lead them to conclude that it was a failure.

nascar making that snooze-fest a "major" is just the elixir needed to bring in and excite the cherished market of fans with a 3 minute attention span!

Depends on what the goal is for this initiative. Those teams not already in will be wide open regardless. Teams already in may take it more seriously if NASCAR doubles the playoff points. Personally, I think most of these guys would run full tilt if they were competing for a warm beer and a handful of stale pretzels. Busch and Harvick don't race X and Trucks for the money.

I doubt increasing the points will have a significant effect on the size of the TV audience.
 
I got a radical idea

just go back to the old points system (only difference is give more points to the winner) and remove the chase and all insane stages and point formats

Back in the 90's there were only two rule changes I wanted to see:

1. An additional 5 points to the winner

2. Finishes that couldn't end under caution

The weighted points system was great, it just needed a few more points to the winner. And I thought that inside 10 laps to go, caution laps shouldn't count. I think the G-W-C is a better idea though.

Trust me, dude. I've only been here for five years but I guarantee that idea has been kicking around here a lot longer than that. :D But who knows, maybe yours is the final one that will push Brian over the edge.
 
they are running a really twisted version of that in Xfinity.

I got a new one..side by side points. Goes right along with stage points..use the in car cameras to count em up. oh hell yeah BOOGIDY

If they do it, I really hope they find a way to resist including Indy. (Though I think a Nascar official said this morning on Sirius that it was the 500, 600, Darlington, and Indy that were in consideration).

I do find it a bit funny that just a few years ago, they re-vamped the whole points system to make it simpler, and easier for teams and fans to know exactly what the point situation was on the track. The stages have already complicated points quite a bit and this would complicate it even further (though perhaps the least complicated way to "add points" to majors would be to just have another stage - like we just did in the 600 - it means more points in those races but not a different point-award system . . . of course that might not be as easy in the shorter races).
