Media Center Meltdown

Hey hey hey, you guys don't know what you are talking about. Just ask Andy. LOL

I guess he will have to take the whole forum to martinsville to show us how it is done. :D

I,m up for that, October 30th right, can we go to the truck race also???

Oh I'm going to want more than One Hotdog :D

Haven't you learned...ANDY knows ALL...If you don't believe me...just ask him.

LOL, no it is cute that is all. You are comparing yourself to the big boys in the media. lol, cute I tell you.

I work for one of the largest, most reputable news organizations in Southern Maryland. It's what I'm paid to do, so yeah I think I know a thing or two.

I stand by what I said. Jenna asked a fair question, during an open press conference.

Exactly. Kurt Busch's reaction as well as Tony's this past week says quite a bit about them. They were both wrong in their actions IMO. Someone earlier posted the proper response, 'No Comment'. If you don't have anything good to say, don't say anything @ all.

I don't care what anyone on here or anywhere else for that matter says but if it weren't for the print media this sport would be an afterthought. Not many of you were around way back when but that used to be about the only way that you could follow this sport and know what the heck was going on. We used to wait until late in the week for our NASCAR news to be published and snail mailed to our homes. That is, those of us that are/were avid fans.

You don't treat people the way that Stewart or Busch did this past week. Simple as that. These people are doing their job to bring us the sport in more detail and I for one appreciate their hard work.

Just a recap…
From the link provided post # 13
“Kurt, can either you or Jimmie win the Chase…” Menzer began to ask.
Before Menzer could finish his thought, Busch cut him off.
“How did I see you were going to come with that? We’re good.” Busch said.
In an attempt to end the interview, Busch turned away and started walking down pit road. Menzer called after him and said the question was legitimate following the multiple incidents with Jimmie Johnson during Saturday night’s race.
At that moment, Busch turned around yelling expletives at Menzer, coming at him as if he wanted to fight. As he called Menzer names and continued to try to get at him, team members from Busch’s Penske Racing team had to physically restrain Busch.

Then from post # 2

. Kurt Busch entered the media center and immediately walked over to confront a reporter for whom he'd had harsh words earlier in the evening. Busch raised his voice to the reporter, and appeared on the verge of stepping to him, when the rest of the drivers arrived and assembled at the podium. Jimmie Johnson was the last to arrive, and very deliberately took a seat at the far end of the table from Busch

Speculation but that sounds like the same reporter “Menzer” to me.

When AP reporter Jenna Fryer began a question to Johnson by noting that Kurt Busch had said he was "in [Johnson's] head," Busch stepped in to say, "I didn't say that tonight. Did not."
Thing is, he did. It was broadcast live on ESPN, and the transcript showed the quote clearly. And then Busch crossed a line. When Fryer showed him the transcript, Busch took the transcript from her hands, ripped it in half, deposited it back on her desk, and stormed out of the room. It was a stunning lack of respect and professionalism on Busch's part.

It should be clear to anyone with reading comprehension that Kurt is no victim here. Menzer asked the same exact question of Johnson and was answered without hostility. Kurt could have just kept walking away when Menzer questioned him, and Menzer according to the reports did not say anything or do anything to initiate the press conference hissy fit.

In addition to this Kurt’s third idiotic and lying act directed at Jenna Fryer was the result of her asking Johnson a question, not Busch. The unhinged liar jumped into that mix with his lie and there is no cause to believe he deserves any defense whatsoever, he didn’t even have to say no comment in that case.

A more honest defense should just admit to caring less about the facts or merits and plans to back Kurt regardless of offenses, or to suggest forgiveness. Forgiveness would be worthwhile and has some honor, if only the liar would own up to it, and go get some counseling, rehab or whatever he needs to get over his lunacy. Most likely he will offer a half hearted apology after his embarrassed owner and sponsor demands something to save face. Short of seeking professional help it will be hollow,
If Kurt is too disturbed to deal with the press he should find a new line of work and lock himself in a padded room for a few hours. Penske and Miller should dump the liar rather than have their efforts tarnished by the piece of garbage.
Kurt has a chemical or mental problem, he hit Stewart’s car in the pits at Dover a few years ago endangering the pit crew, he made an ass out of himself at Phoenix, and he signed a contract 18 or more months in advance and disrespected the man who gave him his championship opportunity. He strikes me as the type who would go scorched earth or postal. At minimum he needs a drug test.

I hope the GF considers his profile, a low life like him in a rage in not funny in the least.

As I see this, the problem, if you want to call it that, is the way the whole system is set up. The media is the side in which all of the press conferences are set up. The drivers have no say so on any of it except that they have to attend. And Andy is right, the reporters are just doing their job. But that job is what our society asks them to do and that is to get a story that people will read/watch/listen. Asking dumb questions seems to be what most of them think is their job. Being critical is the most important thing in their mind. Just look at Andy, the "old pro" reporter, at age 23 having five years on one of the largest news organizations in Southern Maryland. Look at where journalism has taken the career. If you don't get what you want, you probe until you get the reaction. Especially the news print where the reporter can editorialize his own work. I'd love to once see the drivers grilling the reporters in the very same way. Guys like Andy would get hotter than a pepper sprout.

I have often said the questions asked by some reporters are pure bull***t

I'm not going to take sides on either account because I know some reporters ask some really stupid questions and some are looking to provoke people with their questioning. I also know some drivers can be jerks about it. So I say there is some fault all the way around.

Exactly. Kurt was 100% wrong with Jenna and acted like a tard. A big fine is in order, IMO.

What isn't being reported is what Menzer said to enrage Busch so much [Pockrass tweeted that Menzer asked Kurt if he could race JJ "clean" during the chase]. Interestingly, Menzer's article gives a word for word on how he asked the question when talking to JJ. He doesn't give the wording for when he asked Kurt, or what he said when Kurt refused to answer. Kurt didn't get mad at the first question, he got mad at what Menzer said after Kurt refused to answer. Lets report THAT so we can all understand what went on. There is no excuse for Kurt's actions, but maybe there is no excuse for Menzer either. I would like to know the facts.

I could'nt agree more.

I agree with what you are saying here. However, I think that the media is what it is, and with the kind of money that these guys make driving these cars, they can deal with the media in a professional manner instead of acting like a four year old.

My stance in this whole thing is simple...Kurt is jealous and he is a jerk.

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you, but I'm curious as to what or who you think Kurt is jealous of.

Hmmmm, lets see...

1) Hendricks equiptment.
2) Hendrick drivers pretty boy looks.
3) Their 6 championships since he came into the sport.
4) Their wives. (Vander....bosch...bosch...bosch!
5) JJ and Jeffs normal sized ears.

I wish I hadn't asked...now I'm jealous.

lol Nitro Dude, FiFlash has me wondering about YOUR ears, because you're jealous too! ;)

ROFL! That is funny right there! lol

I wasn't gonna take it as far as Fender Bumper, but I think Kurt is jealous of two things...

1. The success of the 48. He seems to have a REAL issue with how good the 48 has been the last several years. He plainly said he would rather lose to anyone than the 48.

2. The comment he made about Hendrick wouldn't consider him for a ride because he is not "pretty enough" made it sound as though he feels he should have been in the running for the 5 car. If not then why would he make that comment or even CARE who Hendrick hired? I think he feels he was "wronged" because he was not. Now why is that? I have no idea. It is not like he is driving second rate equipment by any stretch. He drives for Pesnke, not Petty or Robby Gordon.

That is what I was getting at..but I can't argue with anything FenderBender said :)

Thanks for not arguing and simply laughing at me. lol

I remember Kurt saying that. It sure seemed to me that he tried and failed to get a HMS ride. EVERY driver dreams of that.

IMO, Penske hasn't had championship equiptment. That's why Brad turned down the ride for 2009, even though it was the only one offered. Stremme was hired as a place holder, and Roger waited. Brad came back with some very specific demands that Roger hadn't met the first time around. A fulltime NW team, hire more engineers on the cup side, etc. Basically, Brad said he wanted to see Penske get serious about winning a championship. I remember Penske hiring 40 more people, and Brad said "Good. We need a hundred more to catch HMS".

So, Kurt can't get into HMS, and Brad is getting the Millerlite car and a serious Cup organization built when Kurt couldn't. A former champ is now second fiddle to a 2 year cup driver that everyone used to hate. That's gotta get those dumbo's flapping around and shooting steam.

Oh don't get me wrong man, i agree that Penske may not be on the level of Hendrick...but I think they have just a good a shot of winning a championship at Penske as they do at Rousch or maybe even Gibb. I think Brads success at Penske shows that maybe the problem with the 2 car was NOT the equipment afterall! ;)

I would love to agree there, but I cant. Brad is the one who has brought HUGE changes to the Penske model, and it's well documented. Hell, Penske probably wouldn't have Paul Wolfe if it wasn't for Brad demanding a NW team and asking for Paul. Back then, Brad said of having a NW program "It's where the next great mechanic, engineer or crew chief will come from". Brad has been a driving force in improving the cars, but the cars have improved quite a bit over last year, and well beyond the usual improvement good teams make.

The chase will really tell the story. Last year, the Penske car was total crap. If they show that Penske can crank it up through all 10 races, that will be a first.

I have stayed out of this just to see what some of the opinions would be. DPK, you and I are pretty much in agreement. I do have to make one observation...

In what other sport, any sport, does the athlete have a microphone thrust into his or her face after just suffering (within seconds) one of the biggest losses of their career?

NASCAR prides themselves on being that open. The drivers know what they sign up for.

Or crashes!

And you knew what you were signing up for as well.

You signed up to interview a bunch of type A personalities that give one hundred percent and get mad when things don't go their way. People who have raced since they were five years old and have been pushed hard since they were infants. These people have more passion for their job then most of us could ever understand.

I am one of the older fans that have loved racing all of my life. I also remember waiting on the paper to come on Thursday after the race to see the standings. I have also worked as a medic at short tracks for the past thirty years and have patched up several drivers who got an azz whipping and deserved it.
