So far, at least 32 cars have ran laps faster than the old track record of 194.232. Harvick, Truex and Jr have all broken 200 MPH.

I was there for the tire test a month back and the drivers were simply blipping the gas going into three and one. The big bump in one is gone now so they are bad fast through 1-2.

From Jayski:

Track records shattered in NASCAR practice at MIS: The Sprint Cup Series qualifying record at Michigan International Speedway has been broken unofficially by several cars already this morning, at a special NASCAR test to acclimatize drivers to the newly repaved oval. Toyota driver #56-Martin Truex Jr. became the first NASCAR driver in MIS history to turn a 200-mph lap when he hit 200.261 this morning. Chevy's #88-Dale Earnhardt Jr. was right behind him, at 200.206. Chevy drivers #42-Juan Pablo Montoya (199.440 mph) and #29-Kevin Harvick (199.236 mph) also flirted with the 200-mph threshold. #18-Kyle Busch went 194.789 in his Toyota and #24-Jeff Gordon 194.610 in another Chevrolet. The old track record was 194.232, set by Ryan Newman in a Dodge in 2005.(Detroit Free Press)(6-14-2012)

Notice that Jr is 5.596 mph FASTER than JG, :D he's the Top Dog!

Funny how we aren't hearing from nascar that Goodyear is working on harder tires to slow the cars down anymore. Hamlin nailed what's wrong with repaves, and it looks like nascar listened.

From Jayski:
No restrictor plates planned at MIS: NASCAR officials said they have no plan to add restrictor plates used at Daytona and Talladega to reduce speeds. Vice president of competition Robin Pemberton expected speeds to slow on their own as the track rubbers in and the temperature rises. Series director John Darby said NASCAR has a speed at which liftoff is a concern as is the case at Daytona and Talladega, and "we're not there yet."(ESPN)(6-14-2012)

The main difference I noticed today is how quickly they can get back to full throttle exiting the corners.

I don't think so. NASCAR is not concerned and the track will lose a bit of grip by then.

Wonder if part of their lack of concern is becuase they know next years new car will bring the speeds back down?

The winter will reduce grip even more so I don't think it will be an issue for the 2013 cars.

Jr has a Bad Ass paint scheme for this race, lets see if this works:

Hey Matt try and get some pics of Jr for me.......you'll have to step up your shutter speed and lead it Alot more than that 24 car.

I probably won't be taking my DSLR. I get tired of carrying it around.

Get yourself an ultra zoom compact. Fuji has an excellent line of compact EXR based cameras going up to 20X zoom. I ended up giving away my Rebel because I get more pictures when I can drop the camera in my hip pocket.

Speculation is that all 43 qualifiers will break the track record.

Did Newman say he was running 218 at the end of the straight:eek: Man I hope we don't see any blown tires going into the turn.

I second that. The speeds are cool to see but I just hope they looked at all the variables that can happen.

Don't worry folks, if NASCAR thinks it's too fast, they will slap on a restrictor plate. Then lets see how the griping goes.

I don't think that plates will be an option. I sure as hell hope not...

But I did see that tires were developing blisters after only 15 laps!!

NASCAR added another session tomorrow night...Goodyear is bringing in a new batch of left's to experiment with.

http://www.nascar.com/news/120615/happy-hour-michigan-1/index.html

1) Goodyear is worried about tire heat generated during the daytime test sessions.
2) Goodyear brings in a harder tire to test at night.
3) Qualifying will be during the day, on the softer tires.
4) The race will run during the heat of the day.

This is going to be one interesting Sunday. I don't get it. Didn't speed say that many teams had no problems at all because they had less agressive setups?

I heard them talking about one of the drivers during practice (can't remember which ) anyway ,the gist was that he was being aggressive in abusing his tires in the turns . He would have to find a way to back off during the race or suffer the consequences . Like last week ,when not all drivers had pit road speeding problems , I think that this week , not all drivers will have tire problems . We will ,of course , focus on the ones who do have the tire issues , and blame Goodyear . Which is our right .

Gordon on twitter: "Most I talked to saw blisters. Some worse than others. Not a whole lot we can do. Hopefully corner speed slow down a little in the race." "Just finished with pract & team debrief. Tire management going to b difficult. A lot of blistered tires today."

But later on, it looks like it was the left side that was blistering and it looks like only new left sides will be the change
