Michigan FAST

I heard them talking about one of the drivers during practice (can't remember which ) anyway ,the gist was that he was being aggressive in abusing his tires in the turns . He would have to find a way to back off during the race or suffer the consequences . Like last week ,when not all drivers had pit road speeding problems , I think that this week , not all drivers will have tire problems . We will ,of course , focus on the ones who do have the tire issues , and blame Goodyear . Which is our right .

I say let tire management be part of it. Is camber an issue or with so much grip is it out of the equation?

Oh , tire management is going to be the issue for sure . I think they did mention camber , Michigan isn't a high banked race track (I don't think ) yet they are carrying more speed into the corners . That means tire issues . Wouldn't surprise me to see the fastest cars have trouble and the smartest drivers /crew chiefs pull this one off .

Not sure if anyone seen this........

BROOKLYN, Mich. – Goodyear will change the left side tire combination for the Michigan Sprint Cup Series race after blistering problems surfaced in the wake of higher speeds during practice and testing.

The tire manufacturer sent out a statement late Friday saying the decision to change left side tires came as a safety precaution.

In the final Sprint Cup practice on Friday afternoon, Greg Biffle ran an average speed in excess of 204 mph for his fastest lap. That lap was more than eight miles an hour faster than when Goodyear tested tires on the new Michigan pavement in April.

The replacement tire was run at Charlotte Motor Speedway after that track was repaved at the end of the 2005 season and run at both races at the track the following two years.

Goodyear feels that since the tire proved durable and provided an ample amount of grip for the repaved Charlotte surface, it made it a logical choice to be put in place for the same situation for the fresh asphalt at Michigan.

Goodyear will ship in enough tires for teams to have 10 sets of tires for the race, which is the original NASCAR set limit for this event. Teams will run their original allotment of right-side tires in Sunday’s race.

NASCAR has added another practice session on Saturday following the Nationwide Series race.

Teams will have additional tires available for a NASCAR-scheduled practice following the Nationwide Series race on Saturday.

Wasn't this the same tire responsible for the lack of grip at Charlotte after the repave. If memory serves me correctly it's rock hard. I don't understand why Goodyear can't ever get things right the first time.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Left tire no grip, and run the right side off the car.

So speeds are up to 8 mph faster since April and people think the track is getting slower or will get slower over the course of 4 days?

LOl @ Johnson whining on twitter about having his father's day plans interrupted by the extra practice.

Yeah, while watching the LeMans coverage this AM, a GoodYear spokesman was interviewed. He said that while not every team was experiencing the issue of left-side blistering, there were enough examples throughout the garage area to indicate that a change was necessary. Most teams have first-hand experience with this new tire compound and it's traits, but it will still be a challenge for each and every team and driver to find the sweet spot.

I don't blame GoodYear or NA$$CAR for this. But I do applaud the effort shown by both entities to stage a safe, competitive race!

If up to 25% of teams saw some blistering with the old tire then Goodyear had to do something. Having someone blowout every 15 laps wouldn't have been fun.

The nationwide cars will probably have outpaced the cup cars today....

I wouldn't be too surprised if they do, but I think nascar made the right call. With a freshly washed track, it was only going to get worse.
