I'll take the under on that.
I'll also take the "under."

Since the 2012 repave, the allure of MIS has been the raw, breath-taking speed at corner entry. Unless you are going damn fast, the broad, 18-degree banked turns are less challenging than most other racetracks.

This year, with the very high amounts of aero drag inherent in the Next Gen car coupled with modest 670 horsepower, I expect the cars to be sluggish on the straights, as if they're pulling an anchor. I hope I'm wrong, but that's my expectation. Not a good race for someone like Eleanor Roosevelt...

If that's the case, this was the turning point of that season where the 18 was caught by the 99 and 48.

Carl fired off with a lot of speed that year and a lot of bad luck. Everyone handed Kyle Busch the championship by mid summer, but I remember being adamant about KB lucking into wins where Carl had the field covered (Atlanta, Dover and Chicagoland).

Carl finally got win #4 at Pocono, Johnson became only the third driver to win more than one race that season at Indy. Carl and KB dominated Michigan and Edwards edged him out, finally getting back a win I felt KB owed him. The following week, Carl flat out drove KB after Mr Busch lead over 350 laps at Bristol, getting back to back wins.

After that, Johnson ended the regular season with back to back wins, and Carl looked to be his biggest threat for the championship.

KB never contended for a single race win for the remainder of the season after Michigan and Bristol.

I remember being a 16 year old Edwards fan with 100% confidence Edwards wins the title that year because Johnson winning 3 in a row was statistically near impossible..

LOL.

Carl was one of those few guys who when dialed in was near unbeatable - you give him the best car, he's probably going to dominate and win.

His championship caliber seasons just came at the wrong wrong times.

Storyline – Two kinds of heat to consider at Michigan this week: With summer temperatures expected to be in the upper-80-degree range at Michigan International Speedway this weekend, race fans will surely feel the heat. For NASCAR race teams, however, there is a different kind of heat they are mindful of – tire heat. The track surface at Michigan is relatively “smooth,” so there is not a high amount of tire wear. With the speed expected of the Cup cars, a lot of heat is generated over the course of a run. Since tire heat normally gets dissipated through the tread and there is little wear, Goodyear must design its Michigan tire with the proper tread compound and the appropriate gage (tread thickness) to help that process along.
“Excessive and sustained heat is the enemy of a race tire,” said Greg Stucker, Goodyear’s director of racing. “When you have a smooth track surface, like the one at Michigan, tires just don’t wear naturally. Heat gets generated the more a tire is run, but on most tracks that heat gets dissipated as the tread wears. At Michigan, as on other low-wear tracks, we design the tire with an appropriately formulated tread compound and minimal tread gage to help control the heat generation, and enable the tire to run at a more optimal performance level.”

Notes – Cup teams on unique tire set-up at Michigan: Having moved to an 18-inch bead diameter tire for 2022, NASCAR Cup teams will run a different tire set-up than those in the Xfinity Series at Michigan this week . . . this is the first time Cup teams have run either of these two tire codes . . . Goodyear held a tire test at Michigan on May 31-June 1 . . . teams (drivers) participating in that test were the 23XI Racing Toyota (Bubba Wallace), Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet (Austin Dillon) and Penske Racing Ford (Joey Logano) . . . with this 18-inch tire, and its lower profile sidewall, NASCAR Cup cars will not run inner liners in any of their tires in 2022.
 
History is out the window IMO with this new car. Ford better come with something competitive.....especially Ryan.

Autoclub was a Chevy route if that's the benchmark comparison......ugh.

MIS did need to go to a race a year though. Just wasn’t pulling in the crowds with two dates like that so close together. At least places like Bristol or Martinsville have months in between, June/August wasn’t ideal

Streaming Cup practice and quals... fine, they are a farce anyway the way it is split into groups against groups.
