Michigan qualifying

NASCAR's Vice President of Competition, Robin Pemberton wasn't all that worried about the speeds, and at this time, there are no plans to put restrictor plates on the cars, something drivers and fans alike speculated might happen in the days leading up to Sunday's Quicken Loans 400.

"We're just a little bit faster than we were 15 years ago at Atlanta," Pemberton said. "Time will take care of all of it. We're not concerned right now. We're confident in it."

Until a car gets sideways and goes into the stands.

Hey, let's slow them down to around 70 mph, then everyone can feel safe. Well maybe we can change that to 55 like Gerald Ford did. That will 1) save lives and 2) save fuel. Besides, if everyone has a governor on their engines, all will be the same.

Are they still running the smaller spoiler? I don't think the speeds will be a problem for the tires if the cars are stable. Maybe nascar will let the scup cars run the NW dog ears. That will speed them up in the corners, but slow them a little on the straights. Turn entry and exit is going to be tricky, and those dog ears would help without slowing lap speeds much at all.

5 Fords in the top 10 in practice :D

I don't follow many people on Twitter, but Gordon is reporting that there is a bit of tire blistering. Could be interesting, ir it could be a non-story. Either way, 204 is redonculous.

For those more educated race fans, how easy is it to put on a restrictor plate? So far it looks like speeds are not slowing up and we can't have another Dega '87 on our hands. I don't know if you can have cars stay on the ground at 218 mph in a crash

Nascar takes restrictor plates to every track so it's not problem to install them and roof flaps are only effective up to a certain speed - I think. However, I doubt Nascsar wants to use plates but if tires are blistering and there's a good chance of cars getting airborne, look out.

Either way, I don't think for a second that we've heard the end of this by a long shot.

Improve safety by installing the device that killed Dale Earnhardt. :sarcasm:

They put restrictor plates on the cars at Loudon several years ago for safety reasons and it made for some horrible racing. That race is up there with the 2008 Brickyard 400 on the "Most Pathetic Races Ever Witnessed" list.

Yeah, I imagine they'll get it all figured out after todays activities. If tires are going to be an issues on long runs, decrease the fuel cell capicity.

You're correct, Andy, we certainly don't need to witness another fiasco such as the Brickyard  as I think fans are getting very excited about this race.

I think NASCAR should just make them run their tires until they blow... I mean, that's what many of the fans want, right?

LOL. I suppose it is what some of the fans want but I personlly have no interest in telling any fan what they should like/want/desire. That's up to each individual to decide for themselves, IMO. :)

Keyboard warriors who have no idea how to slow cars down tick me off . None of them have any solutions , just complaints . Plates , like dragging a chute , slow ALL of the cars down , the fast ones still win and the slow ones still lose . Pack racing has more to do with aero and the closeness of the competitors than plates . I would love to see Nascar find a way to slow the cars down 20mph at Michigan , for competition and for safety . I don't claim to know how to go about it .

They need to just race....It'll seperate the men from the boys. They've been pounding the wall there off and on during long runs for years. Indycar is pounding the walls at 220, with alot less protection.

Indy car is what, 1600 lbs and designed to brake apart upon impact. Cup car tips the scales at 3500 lbs. I'd take my chances all day in the Indy car.

Brad, and Carl walked away from their trip up into the catch fence. How'd Weldon make out?
If memory serves me, they said Dan slowed to around 160.....
