Good to see. This is going to be his best shot at finally winning this thing. It looks like he'll also run the road course races.

Team Penske is expected to announce on Wednesday that Juan Pablo Montoya will return to Sprint Cup competition in the Brickyard 400 on July 27.

However, the 38-year-old former Bogota, Colombia native’s NASCAR homecoming could come sooner than that.

Don’t be surprised if Montoya runs a third Penske Racing car at Sonoma Raceway on June 22. Montoya’s first career Cup win was earned at the track in 2007. He could also compete at Watkins Glen on August 10, the site of his second Cup win in 2010. Both dates are open on the IndyCar calendar.

Montoya posted four top 10 finishes in seven starts at Sonoma but posted stronger numbers at the Glen. His three top-five’s and five top 10s in seven seasons combined for an average finish of 13.6.

Still, for Montoya, the Brickyard was the one that got away. He finished second at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 2007 and nearly won the Brickyard 400 in 2009 when he led 116 of 160 laps prior to NASCAR busting Montoya for speeding on pit road. He recovered to finish 11th. However, Montoya has the 2000 Indy 500 victory on his resume.

Sources say Montoya tested a Team Penske NASCAR Ford last week at Nashville Speedway. Veteran Greg Erwin, who was retained after serving as Sam Hornish’s crew chief last year, would likely fill that role with the third Cup car.

Montoya is currently 11th in IndyCar points. His best finish this season was fourth at Long Beach.

As a longtime Montoya fan that's good to hear. Would like to see him run the nationwide races in the 22 at Elkhart lake and mid ohio

If I'm not mistaken he did come close to winning it a few times between 2008-2010.. I recall one races he led the most laps and on the final pit stop took 4 tires to Jamie Mac's 2 and lost. Plus the Penske Fords have been up front all year, not a bad gamble for the Captain

I think you mean where he dominated the race - boring everyone to death - so NASCAR called a pit road speeding penalty on him & he lost the race that way. Got robbed IMO

Not so sure other drivers are thrilled to have him back on the track. He was already a wreck less driver with years of experience under his belt, so I'm not excited to see the way he races after being out of the car for awhile. Hope Larson kicks his ass in his old car.

I'm liking the first paragraph of your post. He got hoed by nascar in 2009 no doubt.

Had the dominating car. He had 0 reason to risk speeding on pit road that late in the race. He wasn't some dumb rookie either. He swore on his family that he wasn't speeding. NASCAR screwed him

You'll realize why when he's in the race and takes half teh field because he doesn't have anything to lose.

He was bad enough when he was full time, what's he gonna do now that he has no strings attach?
Well it was him or Villeneuve.......

I wish we didn't have that avatar bet already because I think he'll do much better than you suspect. Indy is arguably his best oval. When EGR partnered back up with HMS last year he almost won two oval races too.

Let's not forget he also made the Chase with Ganassi once.

What do you have in mind? Another seperate bet?

How would that work?

I'm just teasing. You'd lose to me anyway. :p

Lets just see who's right come July or whenever that race is run.

I say he wrecks a few cars in his wake. Maybe even himself in the process. You say he'll do good.

No bet, just bragging rights. :punkrocke

LOL. Classic

It was the first time in my young life that I thought "Hey, maybe Mark Martin things happen to drivers other than Mark Martin!" Then Gordon still won the title in a backup car while Martin finished third in the race and points, which was probably the most Mark Martin thing that could happen for that season.

ROTFLMAO. Thanks for the link. Good race, gonna watch it tonight.

Danica is the only one I have seen hit a parked vehicle on pit road.:D
If that's true then you haven't been watching Nascar near as long as i thought. I have seen drivers hit cars, spin out on pit road...heck, just a few races ago someone was side ways blocking the entrance to pit road and almost got nailed.:)

As a Montoya fan, I'm very happy about this. He's a good guy and an aggressive driver, sometimes too much so..

Who knows, if he does really well, maybe Penske offers him a cup ride full time next year. Blaney is in the wings but he needs a little more time. Not sure what Penske wants to do but with their success, a third fulltime cup team seems more likely.

Just when we thought we were safe.....
