More clueless NASCAR coverage.

I... This garnered massive news coverage. It's a reasonable assumption that he became more famous after his death with that kind of coverage.

My point is that the driver, car color, and number were famous well before the accident. Perhaps not as famous, but the wreck certainly wasn't the beginning of the fame.

I found this on YouTube.

This was over a week after his death.

I think that your assessment is fair. Perhaps there is a difference between fame and legend? I think that Senna was famous, but became legendary in death. Perhaps the same can be said of Dale Sr.? The parallels between these drivers and their careers could be a thread in and of itself IMO.

I'm thinking that he's referring moreso to mainstream.. I get that he was big in the NASCAR world but I'm thinking after his death the rest of the world learned a lot more about him.

I agree with this.

Yeah here in middle America they will go all the way down to high school whatever stick n ball season it is, but never a peep about motorsports. They do the Chili bowl because they have to, it brings in millions to the local economy. Earnhardt's death was national news, so the local news parroted what they said. The last place I worked was mostly minority's and when I asked some of my friends (after they were calling me a zombie because I didn't know nothing about stick n ball) to name a driver, most of them that could even name one said Earnhardt, I did get one JJ. It was basketball country there.

Pacific Northwest is just as bad. I remember when Petty, Darrell, and Helton came to present to the State Legislature NASCAR's plan to come here, and they literally got laughed off of the House floor. Representative Frank Chop--biggest a**hole ever--referred to NASCAR Nation as a bunch of redneck drunks with rusting pick ups in their front yards. They left, and will never come back. Don't blame them. Anyway, when Senior died, conversation was everywhere about him. I know of many who watched the next few races, and a few who stuck with it for the rest of the season, but all of that was short lived obviously.

What the **** is a Lil Sweet?
A. The diminutive spokes-character for Diet Dr. Pepper, the guy that looks like Prince and James Brown had a love child, with Tiny Tim as the surrogate.

B. A nickname some here are trying to hang on Austin Dillon (I think). Like "Bowman the Showman", it's a nickname that's used by a very small number of people and is quickly getting tiring.

Tiring to you? OK. Not everyone looks at it that way.

I like the heck out of it the proper way if he does start winning races. It's Showman Bowman. DW has it wrong

Doesn't have the same ring as "The King", or "The Silver Fox", or "Jaws". But, it's a start.

I never
Patrick DNF'ed half of her career plate races.
I was never really that excited to watch her last run in the Daytona 500...but, I can't wait to see her run in the Indy 500 again. I just hope she can have a clean safe race. She is still pretty young and she has made a pretty nice life for herself and there are so many other things in life that she can still enjoy now that racing is going to be in her past...who knows maybe marriage and kids could be in her future someday. It's her life her choice.
