Is Dale Earnhardt’s old crew chief Kirk Shelmerdine in the HOF? Is he nominated? He won 4 Winston Cups and was obviously pretty successful with Dale

He is not in and has not been nominated yet.

Sam Ard is considered one of the greatest drivers of all time who didn't compete in Cup.

A lot of his peers said he was a great driver, just didn't move to the next level. Ralph Moody should get in no problem IMHO. I mean he beat some great names during his time.

Man, I wish I was alive to see some of these drivers and engineers. I really missed out on some great names in history.

They're running out of people already.

Tony Stewart is the only one on that list that is definitely a no doubt HOFer

A question was asked of Mike Joy about Kirk being "removed" from the list. Here is Mike's answer ---

After a lengthy discussion of eligible candidates, each voter hand writes 20 names on their ballot, and the highest 20 vote getters are nominated. There is no "removal".

If they have a base of HOF'ers they're satisfied with, they may want to consider reducing the number they let in each year.
Yeah. They cant keep putting 5 guys a year.
Ron Hornaday is in it and no offence but the truck series shouldn't get you in the HOF

Guthrie dropped from nominees for contributions to NASCAR
Her removal was a surprise to Guthrie, who turned 81 last week.

“Surely the nominees for 2020 haven’t been announced yet?” she replied in an email to The Associated Press. “I find that I was nominated for the Landmark Award of 2017 and 2018 as well as 2019. I’ve no idea what their reasoning is in selecting candidates

I mean, it's a Top Three NASCAR series. It should count.
I have to disagree.
I've always been of the opinion that for the Hall to actually mean something it should like other hall of fames and be very difficult to get in. Only the truely great. In NASCAR for me that means Cup series. As good as Xfinity and Truck races can be theyre still the minor league.

IDK, it seems very difficult to recognize the contributions and merit of individuals for a "Hall of Fame" with so many different perspectives -- and voting it in seems to make it a political (high school) exercise.

They should've started with a Hall of Champions -- then build out other recognition from there.

If it were named, NASCAR Cup Series Hall Of Fame, I would be in 100% agreement with you, but its not, so I can't .

Just because most of Ron's success came in the lower series does not diminish his accomplishments.

Bobby Labonte - Busch and Cup Champion. His career hit the wall quickly but for a 10-15 year period he was great in NASCAR's top two series.
Tony Stewart - No Brainer
Ricky Rudd - His consistency was nearly unmatched. He also had solid success as an owner/driver.
Mike Stefanik - He's a modified legend in the Northeast.
Marvin Panch - Helluva driver who won the Daytona 500 and World 600 in dated equipment. One of the first guys from California to make a big splash.

I would say that it absolutely does diminish the accomplishments, relative to Cup standards. I'm not going to equate four Truck championships to a single Cup championship.

However, it doesn't negate the accomplishments. A strong case can also be made that the Trucks were a tougher series during most of Hornaday's prime than it is now. As you say, it is not just the Cup HoF, and it is good to recognize the sport's most impactful figures at each major level.

Comparing it to the Cup level, so of course it would diminish it , but that is like comparing a V8 to a four banger, not really fair.

It’s the nascar hall of fame, not the cup series hall of fame. Not sure why some people can’t undedstand that lol. There’s so many local legends and great drivers from local and national touring series throughout the country that deserve recognition. I’d like to see guys like Sam Ard get there due

Not sure why Geoff Bodine is not one of the 20 nominated. I can understand that he would never be one of 20 most popular, he seemed quirky and l could not relate to him. But his driving was worthy of a HoF spot imo. He was great in New England Modifieds, and the Grand National series leading up to a Cup ride.
He also did a dreat job for HMS in 1985 with the first year team. They went to Martinsville that year just about dollared out like so many have before. Bodine won the race, and in time HMS went on to be dominant. Who knows what would have happened to HMS with a different driver in 1985.
I realize he isn't a first ballot entry type, Dale and Rusty were better but he is still HoF worthy imo.

Yeah if you only look at the guys on the track...there's a lot of great people in this sport who aren't drivers that are unmatched in their field for their respective ability.

It makes no difference to me. Like everything else that is NASCAR, it's a popularity contest. This is why the the people that were the foundation of the sport, and the early innovators, are left off the list.
