Besides being a member here I also belong to a couple of hunting and fishing forums. Once in a while there will be a thread about Nascar. With thousands of members there will only be a handfull of replies with most saying they don't like Nascar. Mostly because the cars aren't stock like they were in the 60s.
I never know how to reply as I don't think you can change their minds. When I was young I knew people that raced and I worked on late models for a few years. I guess most people just don't have that background.

I dont think this is something new. It has been this way from the start.

NASCAR isn't a sport that the vast majority gravitate to. This sport peaked during the early to mid 00s. That was as popular as NASCAR ever got and will ever be.

There are several threads addressing this issue you may want to peruse Brigeton. Among other reasons, the redneck image of Nascar an the fact that young people are not interested in cars as in years gone by.

I agree that NASCAR is not popular in the mainstream but there are still millions of people who enjoy it and follow it closely. I do believe that NASCAR has more fans and ex-fans that are openly hostile to the series than any of the mainstream sports do.

If someone is pining for anything from the 60's I would tell them to watch Antenna TV.

Thread title should probably have 'Breaking News!' in it.

Has NASCAR ever been popular with the general population? While it's always been popular around my inner circle of friends and some relatives, I've never really seen it followed to the degree of other sports. I'm okay with that. It doesn't need to be the most popular sport for me to enjoy it week in and week out.

It was somewhat popular in the early 2000s. Jeff Gordon got to host SNL and Will Farrell did that movie with NASCAR. That seems like the peak to me.

Certainly more popular than today but I would have been hard pressed to find a television tuned to the race in one of the Pittsburgh market sports bars.

Yeah, I wasn't old enough to go to bars until well after the mid 2000s. When I turned 21, I lived in New Hampshire and the bar scene there isn't exactly the best.

If I want to watch a race at a bar these days, I just head to Whisky River in Charlotte.

As far as the title of this thread, someone better let the tv networks know
because they are televising practices and qualifying like crazy along with
hour to 2 hour pre race shows. They obviously are seeing some popularity
(eyeball, ratings) there or they would not do it. So lets see, since we like to
compare things back to the 60's......

@kyle18fan will be right over. he loves that meme :D

as to the thread, I LOVE this sport and I dont give a care what the general population says. For me, I wouldnt care if we saw a return the eaerly ESPN says with a small dedicated die hard market. My fear is that when the bubble that @Allenbaba talks often about bursts that the sport will collapse. I do feel that there will always be racing tho....

Thanks for bringing this to my attention ! now I have a genuine reason to be mad as hell all day !! :windows::micro:

I didn't say I compared it to the 60's, some of the people that don't like it do. You can't change their minds, it's like arguing politics.

I am completely islolated as a NASCAR fan. None of my friends, family or colleagues care about NASCAR. When I was in full NASCAR obsession mode people would say "You don't seem like someone who'd like NASCAR." I gave up trying to explain why I loved it so much. They just didn't care.

However, it didn't deter me a bit. Even though I am no longer obsessed, I still love NASCAR.

Yeah, I have never met another person who likes NASCAR in college, grad school, or my career. I've converted both of my wives to semi-fans, but they would never watch if I wasn't around. It's probably the main reason I come to this board while I don't frequent boards for my other favorite sports (college football, baseball).

It's the incessant attempts to make it popular among the average person that has ruined it.

I thought I was the only one that lived that life. My sickness runs a lot deeper than just Nascar though.
ie: Indy practice streaming live now at the website (Power just wrecked).

Occasionally my wife will glance at the screen, see a damaged car, and say something like, "Isn't that <insert driver name>?" Then, shaking her head, "I shouldn't know that..."

Oh, lovely; another one of those ag-ree-cul-toor people. The Hunter-Gatherer lifestyle was good enough for thousands of years, but you expect this new-fangled business of growing seeds to attract new fans. #BORING

Perhaps an e-journalist will interview a driver finishing in the mid twenties in last year’s standings to get some authoritative thoughts on the matter.

The constant negative crap gets old. Can we have a sub forum for the negative crap, so I don't see it?

WTF
