NASCAR stages road course test at Charlotte Motor Speedway

hope they continue to get some one race road race ringers like they have at the other road racing tracks. Should be a good track in the rain with the slower speeds.
Eh. The ringers have been back markers more than competitive in the last several years, at least at the Cup level. With all the r/c experience upcoming drivers get these days, there's no motivation for any halfway decent team to put a substitute in the cab.
 
tell that to Sam Hornish. At any rate competitive or not, it is good to see new blood and full fields for the road racing. IMO.
 
This is an example of what a road course should look like. One of the best in the world IMO, VIRView attachment 29575 elevation changes and a scenic setting, purpose built. Think this is what we all wanted. Many more like this all over the states.

It's a wave the magic wand thing. There will be plenty of parking, roads will widen themselves, hotels will sprout up out of the ground..landing strips, pit buildings and plenty of hauler parking. :D

Road courses may have a few grandstands but usually feature hills and berms with general admission fees and allow 'bring your own' lawn chairs. Fans often move around to see different portions of the track. It's a different spectator experience than an oval, and requires a different viewing strategy. That's one reason why the Charlotte roval may prove popular (and why I'd like to see the Rolex 24 one day) - spectators can see the entire course. There's the question of will Charlotte be worth watching, but that will be answered in a year.
 
That's a pretty strange article. Took awhile to figure out the three chicanes claim (3,4 roval numbers is the third I believe). They are mixing oval turn numbers with Roval turn numbers to describe the problem...I think? Plain as mud, maybe somebody can figure it out, I don't think I did.
 
I'm actually excited about this race and new track setup. NASCAR getting away from the same-old-same-old is a good thing IMO. Adding a road course to the Chase is one thing but adding a road course that no one has ever raced on is another. I'm cautiously optimistic.
 
Road America, Road Atlanta, Montreal, Laguna Seca, all could of hosted a Road course race, but no they decided a Roval is the way to go
Road Atlanta is NOT ready for a Cup race. It needs Millions in upgrades and Improvements. I did the K&N Championship race there a few years ago and it was pitiful. They are in the woods so long I thought they would never come back.
 
Yeah me too I'm glad they continually try new things but trying to imagine what the race will be like with a full field of cars is anybodies guess. It will probably take a few races to tell how it is going to race. The chicanes are going to slow down the speeds IMO and that and the twisty infield should equate to short track speeds. Short track speeds usually mean beating and banging when the driver thinks it is necessary? My guess anyway.

They are evaluating three different variations of a backstretch chicane to figure out which to use.
 
The second question is quite likely "Which current track operator is going to willingly hand over his license to print money?"
With basically only two owners and with the amount of money being printed apparently on the decline, it maybe the question will become, "What track can I buy that will print more money than one I already have on the schedule?"

A lot of modeling, a lot of simulation and it looks like the speeds are going to be comparable to Watkins Glen and NASCAR has made the call, yeah, Goodyear go ahead and have rain tires available for this race a year from now.’’
“The banking that you run here adds a whole different element from a car setup standpoint,’’ Grant said. “It’s different than trying to set up the car for a road course at Sonoma for example. We’re going to learn a lot about the tires and the compound necessary to come here with a good race tire, but the teams are going to learn a lot about how to set the car up properly.’’
