NBC's NASCAR team begins to take shape

When Tony and Kevin retire down the road, I hope that one or both end up in the booth. That would be classic.

I don't see Tony in the booth. He usually speaks in a very monotone voice. Unless he's mad.

I think Carl is good in the booth, but I'm not done watching him on the racetrack yet :)
Carl had some good runs this past season but the team seemed to be lacking performance on certain racetracks. Hopefully they make some positive progress in the off-season.

I have to admit I enjoy watching Carl when he's competitive. He's a aggressive driver and if you don't give him a inch, he'll take it. I don't know if it's him not racing NNS like he used to, the team or a combination but his performance has been really down. He is excellent in the booth IMO also.

I often wonder if Carl's performance has fallen off since his dust up with Brad . Some of that reckless abandon possibly gone ?

I dunno Ted...I feel like the Roush team as a whole has dropped off over the last couple of years as opposed to Gibbs and Hendrick, and even MWR until Richmond. Yeah, Carl did amazing in 2011 and probably should have won the title but he was the exception to the rule. It could be just that - maybe he still hasn't recovered from coming so close and not winning it all.

Perhaps even more importantly, he lost Bob Osborne and I feel like that really set him back. Jimmy Fennig is a great crew chief, easily the best that Roush has right now and probably one of the best in the whole Sprint Cup garage, but Carl just had great chemistry with Osborne. When they separated those two in that crew chief swap with McMurray a few years back, I felt like it only hurt Carl, and his performance eventually picked up again when they were paired back up. As you guys have said time and time again, that kind of chemistry between driver and CC is very hard to come by.

Dave Moody says Steve LeTarte heading to NBCSN in 2015 alongside Rick Allen and Jeff Burton. Good team here. Steve LeTarte did work on the old Prelude broadcasts.

Is he stepping off the box? Or is that in addition to his CC duties?

here is what Jayski has on it:

  • Letarte Heading For TV Booth In 2015: Dale Earnhardt, Jr. will have a new crew chief in 2015. GodfatherMotorsports.com has learned that crew chief Steve Letarte will relinquish his spot atop the #88 teams pit box at seasons end to accept a new position as a television analyst with NBC and NBC Sports Network, beginning in 2015. Multiple sources say Letarte will join Rick Allen and driver Jeff Burton in the broadcast booth for the final 20 races of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season, as well as the final 19 NASCAR Nationwide Series events. The network also holds rights to select NASCAR Regional Racing Series events, Mexico's NASCAR Toyota Series, the annual NASCAR Hall of Fame induction ceremony and various post-season awards banquets. Letarte has served as crew chief for NASCARs Most Popular Driver since 2011, with one win, 24 Top-5 and 54 Top-10 finishes in 106 starts. Earnhardt finished fifth in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship standings last season, despite failing to win a race. He recorded Top-5 finishes in five of the final eight races and is expected to challenge for the 2014 title. An official announcement of Letartes new position is expected this week in Daytona Beach. Reached for comment, Letarte said, I will be the crew chief for the #88 Chevrolet in in 2014. Thats all I know right now.(Godfather Motorsports)(1-9-2014)

I'd assume he is stepping off the box. How will he be able to be a crew chief and call a race at the same time?

Yeah I guess he's gone, I was just wondering if he was going to do the Carl Edwards thing and come on before and after the race. I'm kind of surprised but maybe he doesn't want the pressure anymore?

The Press Conference for NBC is going on right now on Sirius NASCAR Radio. I'm not sure if they'll post a link to it later or not. If so, I''ll post it.

Most of the questions have been directed to Steve and his move from Hendrick. No surprise there.

I'll bet there are some resumes on this board which wouldn't do any worse. Don't get me wrong; I don't blame little Earnhardt's lack of winning on his CC's but some of the calls which Letarte has made over the years make no sense to me.

NBC should give Letarte and Kenny Wallace their own show. The Steve and Le tard show could be a huge hit.

I remember back when I was 6 years old when NBC was a main broadcaster how I loved the excitement and truthfulness of the team. Nothing like bring the memories from 9 years ago

Works for me.

I am OK with Rick Allen. He's not my favorite but he's knowledgeable and genuine.

Jeff Burton? It's gonna take some time for him to adjust to TV. As for Letarte, I will reserve judgment for now.

I just hope beyond hope that they do away with the Broadcast Hosts and the banal duplication of efforts.

And please, Please, PLEASE... No Crusty Wallace!!!!!!

I am going to be honest, but I am not impressed with NBC's line up so far, I mean no disrespect to any of them, but this does not say top level motor sports covereage , this is like Arca coverage people.

I was so sure that Allen Bestwick was going to come over, cant believe he is staying at ESPN, I guess ESPN is paying him a lot more the NBC would or maybe his contract wasnt up yet.

I am not a fan of Rick Allen and he is one reason why I dont like watching the truck race's, I will say this, and I will agree and I do like this , NBC will have a current driver/CC in the both, vs Faux with windbag and Larry Mac, now, not taking anything away from Larry Mac, he is one of my favorites in the sports(going back to Irvan days) but NASCAR and the Cup Series isnt even close to being the same when he was CC.

Allen Bestwick was never going back to NBC.

This.

Cannot believe the shortage of color commentators in racing. When I was a kid I wanted to be one when I grew up(lol I would be terrible). Had no idea there would be a demand.
