What happened to the mobile version of the site?

That seems to be a casualty of the new responsive design. Responsive meaning it responds to the lack of screen width by taking some things out. I can probably customize what bits and pieces it takes out. Could probably customize even better if I didn't suck so bad at CSS :p

With all due respect, as I can't begin to imagine what's involved in creating a board like this, was the old format actually broke somehow or was there just some overwhelming desire to make improvements ?

In any event, how the old format was able to "remember" the last unread post within a thread was a great feature that I've never seen anywhere else.

And now, of course, I don't see it here anymore . . .
 
pjmolo, there were updates to the XenForo that needed to be put in. When we first went to this format, fury worked hard to
adjust and rework it to accommodate everything. Now, he just doesn't have the time.

As to the "remember" , just hit "Go to first unread" at the top where the page numbers are.

Mine is still there, I haven't had the problems you guys have ever since I cleared my computer of cookies, caches, history etc, took RFs off of favorites, desktop and all, made sure my browser was up to date (actually I made sure all three work good, IE, Firefox and Google Chrome in case I want to switch) then brought it back up and its fine, so I would try that.

I've been running boards for years (this currently being the biggest one), and if there's one thing I've found over the years, it's that if the board isn't constantly evolving in technology along with the people who use it, then there will gradually be fewer and fewer people using it until it's no longer worth the trouble of coming to anymore. I let too many of my things to grow old and stagnant and die, I don't want to let that happen to this one. This upgrade I just made (from 1.1 to 1.2) was not so much of a change as there was from vBulletin to XenForo, I thought it'd just be as quick as a version upgrade and it'd be the same as before but with a few extra goodies. I didn't realize before I'd done it that it would break so many things. This is the challenge with staying fresh.

Beyond the version number upgrade, there were supposed to be a number of improvements to handling spam. That's another department in which we have to stay current in order to stay ahead of the spammers. The older the board software gets, the better the spammers get at coming in and blanketing it with their crap.

That feature ought to still work. I'll do some investimigating and see what I can find out.
 
I don't have a clue when it comes to computors , and I'm still a one finger typist , but I gotta tell you , you folks are doing a heck of a great job putting this forum together . Great work, thanks.

Any chance of making Calibri or Verdana the default font? This New Times Roman makes it look like we're in 1997.

For sure. Bugs me that they picked that as a default font for the posts. In pretty much every other sense, this forum software is so ahead of the curve. I aspire to program something this elegant in my lifetime. I'll play around with it here in a bit.

Download Tapatalk app for your phone......Its great to access this site when your away from your comp
 
When I use IE 10 I cant use emoticons in my posts but if I open Chrome as my browser I have access to emoticons and all the tools in the row at the top of the reply box.

any idea why?

I'll see if I can fire up my old PC and get IE 10 running and try and track it down.

My first uneducated guess is that the authors of the text editor decided to reduce functionality on lesser browsers.

Quick question, are you running ie 10 in any compatibility modes?

Not intentionally ...or that I'm aware of Lol

Not a big deal as I can use Chrome. Thanks for looking into it....I see FenderBumper had the same issue so I'm not alone.

Trying to tackle this now. In what way did it remember before that it does not now? For instance, if I click on a thread that has new posts in it, it jumps straight to the first one I haven't read yet, so that's where I came up with the "this should still work". If it isn't doing that for you, then perhaps the board already thinks you read it for some reason. (That may be related to cookies - still got some investimugatin to do)

I'll still look into it, just may take some time for me to fire up the PC...actually I may have better luck just throwing a new Windows install onto my Mac.

I'd recommend Chrome in any case, if possible. I don't see Microsoft doing anything particularly worthy in IE 10 that makes it a better browser. (Stop me if I'm wrong...)

When I click on any thread, it takes to straight to the bottom where I see a flashing cursor waiting for me to post.

This happens whether I've read some of the posts already or if I'm opening a thread for the first time.

Also, when I'm in a thread and go to the next page, it takes me straight to the bottom of the next page, not the top.

btw, I've cleared all my cookies . . .

All I know is that it works, which is just fine by me. All this chrome fox stuff will turn my machine into wall art.

Typically IE 8 which, upon further review, might be the problem.

I opened the board using Google Chrome and had none of the problems I described earlier.

go figure . . .
 
I've installed a copy of Windows and I'm checking out IE now.

I followed your lead and switched to google crome . I got my emoticons back which is great . Now my favorites bar is gone and I'm working on trying to get that back . Why didn't I stay in school?

It would seem IE is indeed the problem. I will see if XenForo can provide a solution to the editor automatically grabbing the cursor and scrolling the page down to it. In the meantime, I'd suggest sticking with Chrome. I don't know that a whole lot can be done to work around IE's problems.

If you still need to use IE, and want to get around that problem, you can turn off the Rich Text Editor in your preferences page - top right corner, mouse over your name, and click "preferences", a little window will pop up with some checkboxes. Turning off the rich text editor gets around this problem, but then you don't have any of the clickable buttons for text formatting and smilies.

Google Chrome can import your favorites and stuff. Click the hamburger button (three lines on top of one another at the top right corner, just to the right of the address bar) - go to Settings. In the middle of that Settings page, check "Always show the bookmarks bar" - that's something I tend to always enable. When it's there, you will see an "Import bookmarks" button too, if you haven't already done so, that will grab your bookmarks from your old browser.

That's one think I'm very happy about. Chrome asked me if I wanted to bring my favorites with me...... And I declined as I have way to many. Now I get to start fresh. :)
 
Chrome has been mega slow for me the past month or so.

Everytime I load it up it takes so long to load the main page. I'm thiking of just deleting it now.

Firefox is not really optimal either but it will have to do for now since I'll never go back to IE.

Thinking of doing a roll back to an early version of Firefox. 22 is buggy as hell.

Well, I don't know what else to call that button :D

It's pretty much the only button Chrome has on that end of the browser, so I figured hamburger button is descriptive enough

No browser is perfect. They all try to be everything to everybody, trying to load up everything so that they have it ready for you when you click on it, and they end up using a lot of memory as a result.

You might try going through your addons list and making sure you only have necessities enabled.

in Chrome: Hamburger button -> tools -> extensions
in Safari: edit preferences -> extensions tab
in Firefox: tools menu or firefox button -> addons

I also use addons or settings that disable Flash and Java by default, only running when I click on them. Those tend to be the biggest culprit of slow browsing in my experience

Chrome: Click to Play setting
Safari: Click to Plugin extension
Firefox: Click to Play setting
