New qualifying rules announced

It's about time they did this. Huge improvement. I will now start attending qualifying sessions and so fast forwarding through them in TV. RP qualifying is now going to be tolerable. I feel like we gained an extra race most weeks.

This idea I like. I hope it works out and teams don't turn it into a fiasco like they did to the tandem.

probably look for a space in the line, do a one lapper or two, and hit the pits and watch the leaderboard, if you get bumped adjust the car and go back out and try to get in the lead pack. I don't know what the plan will be for the last part.

I can hear it now "the 10 car impeded my progress" In F-1 qualifying drivers get penalized for getting in another cars way, interested to see how Nascar handles this issue.

knowing Nascar's history, they won't call blocking, and if they do, they will screw it up. Can't wait for the N'wide RP race to see the mess they have stepped in.

Upon further review.....Let's take the typical 1.5 miler--Vegas, for example, and work through the sessions......1) Session 1: You hit the track early or wait for the bottom feeders to clean it up? Either way, I imagine that we will have some time with the track empty while tires are saved. 2) Session 2: Laps are on the tires, and the track is clean....Go early to take advantage of the cool track? ....back out only if needed?...3) Session 3: Go early when the track is coolest? ...and then some questions...1) How will timing work? Does the lap have to be finished by the end of the session or just take green? 2) Will war wagons be necessary on pit lane given the potential for stops, adjustments, etc.? ....Would this not render pits hot, and thus your traditional pit pass ineffective? 3) They will line cars up according to random draw to start, and then by time in Sessions 2 and 3. Do you have to go out, or can you stay on pit road?

I wont be happy if the pits get closed for Qualifying, we already bought passes for Phoenix too :(

This is all about squeezing the process into an hour for TV. heaven forbid they lose a little football time. Indy car tried a new qualifying procedure and it really helped the popularity of that series :bsflag:

I look forward to the uproar the first time a backmarker spins or wrecks and collects a top driver in Q1.

In thinking about it, however, it could be huge for NASCAR to leave the pits open, and actually enhance the pit pass. Bring more people to the track on Friday. Hmmmm.

You want my thought?

I like it. Putting some microscopic meaning in qualifying. But smaller groups like at road courses would be better.

Also, if they dropped the top 35 rule, i think that would compliment this format well.

I agree that the session average should be used to keep cars out & reward sharpness. Would take care of the blocking issue as well. Keep the inability to change tire/lift hood, but allow them to make changes. That way the good teams will make 2 laps and park it, the behind teams will be able to adjust and try to squeeze that fast lap out.

Lots of the tracks are very limited on the amount of pit passes, Im sure they always sell out. Phoenix usually sells theirs real quick

The problem with session average is that it doesn't benefit you to stay out if you make a fast lap early. Plus, it takes away that last lap drama of cars crossing at the checker to see if they make the cut for the next round.

Just putting it out there.... but if they are going to put all the cars out there at once then why dont just do heat races?

As some have mentioned I am not sure how much this will change things on many tracks meaning guys will only get one good lap out of the car so why run the whole time and risk an accident. Using avg. times would combat this however.

This is going to be interesting. They could do away with a practice in lieu of the new qualifying package.

Don't know about that. They are still going to need plenty of time to work on their car setups. The only time that they are allowed to make changes to the car during this qualifying procedure is between qualifying segments. They can't put a wrench to the car/truck while that qualifying clock is running. This is really going to separate the good from the bad crew chiefs. A lot is going to fall on their shoulders with this change. Like you said, this is going to be interesting.

Yeah, I'm starting to think that the net effect will be minimal once the teams figure everything out. The opportunity to defend your position would be pretty cool however.

Yeah, I'm on the fence about this change, only because I feel that if this ends up being a success, timed races will be the next step, and I don't want to see that happen.

I"ll be at MIS with bells on.

Anybody know if they start a session from the pits or does the clock start at the drop of the flag? Potentially busy pit road.

How might this play out? Let's say the 48 is dominant (that never happens). One lap and done Session 1 to get to the 24. One lap and done to get to the final Session. One lap and done in the final session. Pole. This may not be the all cars on track chaos many are hoping for.

If we take lessons learned in F1, the players would wait until track conditions were ideal before taking a lap in order to preserve tires. Hmmmm.

The fastest lap of the day may not take the pole. Interesting...

Well they can always roll out the back up car but what if that driver gets his bell rung or worse and can't continue?
Brain is gonna keep fiddling and diddling until he breaks it beyond all recognition.

I think they'll start a session with the cars coming out of the pits. I read somewhere they'll line up there in order of points on pit road.. they would probably want room between the cars if they can get it... cant think of where I read it though.

We might be wishing that the speed channel was back after a year or 2 of this stuff. Pressure from the networks may be overriding common sense. If there isnt enough people watching they wont be wasting air time :(

Have no idea how they will be able to control all the traffic, there isnt much room on some of these small tracks. F-1 races on big enough tracks to keep the cars spread out and they use more than one set of tires. I can see how 5 cars on the track at one time might work but not much more. We will be seeing cars on the pole that dont belong there IMO

Speed Channel was a Fox channel since 2001. It was only renamed/rebranded recently. One of the two current FOX channels will definitely be broadcasting this new format.

Have you heard if we will still be seeing practice sessions or not ?

A while back NASCAR Radio quit broadcasting qualifying. The top 35 rule made it pretty much meaningless. I hope to hear it back on the radio with this new format. I used to always listen to it during my Friday afternoon drive home.

I highly doubt they could get the backup unloaded and ready to make a run in the next session, or towards the end of the current session if they haven't already made the cut for the next round. Too little time.

They'll be lined up on pit road by a random draw and can leave the pits any time while the green is displayed.

Will they have to wait for the cars ahead to go or can they pull out whenever they want ??
