what happened to the great nicknames nascar had

handsome harry

the intimidator-earnhardt

the black knight-davey allison

awesome bill from dawsonville

jaws-d.w.

the alabama gang

the king

the wonder boy

swervin irvan

now you get nicknames like

bad brad (what makes him bad?)

the closer (though hes always finishsing 2nd--harvick)

tehe greatest thing since slice bread (yawn)

rowdy-i like that

the outlaw- was great until his girlfriend accused him of abuse

Agreed, those nicknames are pretty lame. I never understood Harvick being called The Closer.

Before he started finishing 2nd every week, Harvick had a run where he was coming out of nowhere to win races in the closing laps without being much of a factor all day. That name really doesn't apply anymore though.
 
I have never heard Kasey called Kandy Kahne....I have tried to make hurrikahne stick though

Harvick never lead many laps when he was at RCR. When he won he would usually just hang around and then steal a win in the final few laps, mainly between 2010-2013.

I remember in 2011 or 2012 maybe, at California, Harvick only led the last lap. The next week at Martinsville, he only led like the last 5 laps or so. I think that's when the nickname was stuck on him. He needs a new one. "Happy Harvick" doesn't work either.

I think nicknames across all sports and racing series have declined or are not used as much as in years past. Billy "White Shoes" Johnson, William "The Refrigerator" Perry, Jack "The Assassin" Tatum, "Catfish" Hunter", Mark "The Bird" Fydrich", George "The Chief" Armstrong, Maurice "The Rocket" Richard, Dave "The Hammer" Schultz", Eddie "The Entertainer" Shack", Freddy "The Fog" Shero and finally "Georges "The Chicoutimi Cucumber" Vezina.

Those are just a few that I always liked.

Maybe it's just the Raider fan in me, but I always loved the Assassin nickname. Fit him so well.

Some nicknames like "The Closer" and "Front Row Joe" are given way to quickly as after a few weeks the make no sense. As far as "Rowdy" goes.....who the hell gives themselves a nick name?
 
I don't get the "closer" nickname for Harvick. His nick is still Happy Harvick as far as I'm concerned. You can't just go changing nicknames. And I don't like the whole "give yourself a nickname" movement, such as Rowdy and Outlaw.

I still think Mr. Excitement is the greatest nickname. Although I admit as a Spencer fan I am slightly biased. ;)
