Op-Ed: NASCAR races should never finish under caution

Andy is the only forum member with enough pull to make it stay daylight until a race can finish under green.

Another pet peeve of mine - why EVERY track in NASCAR doesn't have lights is a mystery to me.
When fans have been at the track since early morning waiting out a rain delay , the track having lights so they can finish a race after midnight is a scary thought . Tracks need full stands to pay for soft walls , soft seats and track lighting . It's not happening.

I don't know that there is going to be a GWC . Did I miss a meeting ? You say that , but they are still rare . IMO
Six GWCs in eleven races so far this season. That's counting Daytona and Talladega, where the green was thrown with two laps to go but still in the scheduled race distance, and Bristol, which would have seen a GWC if not for the rain.

And these were preplanned GWC's ? No accidents ?

How would NASCAR police an unlimited GWC event? What if I'm running in fifth place on the last lap with no chance to catch that leader. I've got the opportunity, battling with the fourth place car, to get a little loose and in my effort to catch it I accidentally put that fourth place car into the wall. I restart under this new, extended GWC format and proceed to take out the third and then again the second place car on the next two restarts. All by accident of course. Finally, on that last restart I've got my chance at the leader. Yeah, that makes sense. I can wreck em till I get what I want all under the guise of 'Boyz Have At It'. ;)

If you want the ARCA rules, go watch ARCA. Quit changing my NASCAR. Seems to me that NASCAR is doing everything that they can to get the race to finish under green. These guys/gal are given 3 chances to get it right. That seems like enough to me. NASCAR's doing it right.

What is ARCA rule concerning finishing under green?

Caution comes out, line 'em up and do it again. Caution comes out on white flag, line 'em up for a one lap runoff. Caution comes out during that runoff, line 'em up and do it again.

So basically a modified version of the GWC that apparently doesn't have a limit.

Why not just run the Daytona 3/167s GWC extravaganza.

167 shots at a spectacular finish, perhaps with 43 different winners.
Surely it would be much better than the antiquated pure stuff.

Brian and Andy would probably love it.

It's funny - the purists don't like my opinions so they automatically think I'm for manufactured entertainment.

Right on, Richard Cranium.

you guys gonna miss a good race sat nite !

I will be watching it isnt my favorite, but I do enjoy the event. It is more aligned with the advertised product than a typical cup race.
In contrast an advertised 500 gets at least a half dozen resets. Some genuinely needed and deserving of respect. With some phony ones to protect claims of the most competitive finish ever.
Along with the final insulting GWC, that often undermines the best performances of the day.

I dont believe NASCAR favors any drivers, they just cater to and fuel an incompetent culture that doesn't have the ability to respect genuine racing that is worthy enough to be self sustaining
If Nascar doesn't respect genuine racing enough to let it happen, to allow for tire degradation, long green pit cycles and the fatigue driven errors who will?

The unnecessary racing alterations are just as shameful as Richmond was last year. And they built a culture were cautions was no big deal prior to Clints itch. Then they pompously punished and denied the very thing they created.

I know it is entertainment. I would not be as passionate if I wasnt stimulated.

But the competition is real and worth preserving. I am glad racing isnt a blood sport like it was the day.

But if it is your blood it is an all or nothing thing, and I think you can relate.
When somebody has fought hard to get an advantage I dont want a casual caution changing their lifes work.
Wins shouldn't be cheap, and I do think GWC and debri cautions degrade the real race.

I still say GWC is nothing more than a crash-fest and should be repealed. Fans just need to deal with the fact that sometimes race finish under cautions.
When was the last time a GWC caused a huge pile of wrecked cars besides a plate race?

I agree with Greg , it's sad to see a late race caution where someone has half a lap on the rest of the field . Dominated all day . Rather than lose track position , he is told to stay out while others , at the back of the field , pit for fresh tires and make a mockery of the remainder of the race . In my mind , that would be the time to call the race , give the car that deservedly won the race the trophy . I know , that'll never happen , in todays 'made for tv world ' . Folks need more drama in their dull lives . Chocolate Myers says , the best Nascar race he ever saw was his first one , his hero Richard Petty , won the race at Darlington ... By 9 laps.

Well, the NCWTS just ended in the same fashion as the Cup dega race. Not like anyone was going to catch Kyle anyway but finishing under yellow kills the ending

next step comin in new rules under white.....
....... all races end under green checker.

I don't even see the point of implementing the GWC rule if a caution comes out on the last lap & they just call the race.
