Phantom Debris Cautions

A potatoe chip bag on the track can look like a piece of metal . After many serious accidents on the track , Nascar has made a conserted effort to err on the side of caution . Sometimes they look like fools if the debris is gone when the track workers get there or it turns out to be a harmless piece of foam . Looking like fools to a few internet cowboys is better than having a fan or a driver injured IMO. I've personally seen full cans of beer thrown at racecars on the track , I've seen cars taken out by debris puncturing their radiator , and I've seen fans hauled away on stretchers .Nascar doesn't have any business throwing fewer caution flags .[/quote stop it.

LOL. It's not like there's only ONE camera at the track. If they have time to show Patrick and Stenhouse setting in the otherwise empty stands, the have time to show why the caution was thrown.

Remember Digger? How about a debris cam? How about "real" Nascar fans posting snapshots of the debris, taken with their iPhones?

The whole point is , sometimes the debris is gone when the clean up folks get there . It's in someones grill , up in the stands , or knocked down off the track surface . Doesn't mean there wasn't something there before 43 cars rolled through it at 180 mph . I've seen two or three cars hit the same piece of debris before it ended up in the infield .I don't need proof , I'm glad that Nascar is looking out for my safety when I'm at the track and the safety of my driver .

You don't think that there are cameras on every every inch of the track? If France could forbid the Networks from showing ANY debris he would but it would look way to suspicious.

Remember when Montoya hit the jet dryer and there were no good camera angles of it?

No, there aren't cameras "on every inch of the track". They get horrible angles of stuff all the time.

TV's job is to make money by showing commercials. The NASCAR in between commercials is so you stay and watch commercials. It isn't the job of TV to show debris so armchair amateur race control directors can call yellow flags.

Then why do they sometimes show it and other times don't?

This is what Johnson had to say about it. I wonder if he ever got to see it?

"Debris," he said. "A debris caution."
And what was the debris in question?
"Show me," Johnson said. "I don't know. I'm being a smartass, but I don't know where it was or what it was. I didn't see anything myself."
But was the debris caution bogus or legitimate?
"I don't know, honestly," Johnson said. "I've thrown (NASCAR officials) under the bus before and it turned out there was something there, so I've just got to watch myself and watch the video and see for myself."

Then why do they sometimes show it and other times don't?
Because there's a caution and sometimes they have to hurry off to commercial because they have so many ads to show per hour?

Besides, like Ted said, they have track spotters in the corners making these calls. Maybe sometimes they think they see something that isn't there, or it does get sucked into somebody's grill or tire or what not. We all saw that giant piece of paper that was on Dale Jr's grill on Sunday, but they didn't exactly have any footage of how it ended up on there.

I don't believe for a second that there's not at least ONE camera that doesn't have have time to follow the truck going out going to pick up the debris.

No caution unless it's in the racing groove. Roll bar padding, a water bottle, a spring rubber well down on the apron no where near the groove doesn't warrant a caution.

Hey, what about trash on the grille? Throw a caution because that motor could blow causing a massive wreck? Ridiculous I know but no more than some of the stuff we've seen a caution for..

I personally commend NASCAR for debris cautions, since many drivers lives were saved because of them. Back in the 50's and 60's many drivers lost their lives or sustained career ending injuries due to hot dog wrappers or 2 inch pieces of tape......fortunately plastic water bottles weren't around at the time because the results would have been tragically worse!

they don't have debris cautions in video games? no. Doesn't hurt when you hit the wall yet I don't think, wonder if they can feel all the wind that 43 cars kick up and see all the junk in the air. Probably not. If they went to a race and walked around close to the fence and got smacked with the little bitty pebbles, I think they would get the idea that something large and soft can knock the dog speck out of you moving at 180.

Honestly , I can't keep up with your argument .You make up this 'fact' about Nascar throwing useless cautions to keep Jimmie from winning the race . We try to tell you that there may have been debris there but the camera didn't catch it . Then you make up a 'fact' that there are cameras covering every 'inch' of the track .Then we tell you that no camera even caught the Montoya jet dryer crash , and off you go again somewhere else . Nascar doesn't require the networks to show the debris , they do if they want to and have time .It's their call , simple as that. Then , analysing the debris after the fact ,and commenting on it , is even more crazy . How can the corner worker tell the difference between something that might be really dangerous and an aluminium foil sandwich wrapper from 100 yds away?

Dear, Sweet Jesus, have you lost your mind? I didn't say Nascar called a useless caution to keeep Jimmie from winning the race...I posted a quote of his, talking about the caution and you have no more proof that there was debris than I do that there wasn't.

BFS there was no footage of Montoya hitting that jet dryer.

Why WOULDN'T the networks show the debris?

I'll tell you what's crazy...believing that the almighty Brian France is some kind of Patron Saint of Racing and doesn't influence the outcome of races by throwing cautions at very opportune times and then blaming fans for his boneheaded decisions...THAT is what's crazy.

why wouldn't you show the debris? let me count the ways. #1 first and foremost. Money. The director has to get in so many spots a race. Announcers have head phones on, and the director says pan out, cut to commercial. Remember that one..because there are commercial after commercial $$$$. They don't get payed if the spot doesn't show. #2 camera angles aren't that great in certain spots. Pay attention when the race is being broadcast. There are cameras in the hot spots. They missed a wreck this year, at Pocono, had to show from two cameras, neither which were anywhere close..and they didn't have an in car close either..so even if they want to show it sometimes it is such a bad shot they don't. They use the least amount of cameras that will get them by, quite a bit different shot of a long zoom shot of a car, and a worker picking up something small of the track. As they say around here... Boring.

hey, if ya got your work done for the day, there is always some yahoo crying about cautions or short tracks or N'wide to mess with. :headbang:

they didn't throw it to keep jj from winning, they just didn't wont him to win going away.
