Storyline – Homestead = high tire wear: Homestead-Miami Speedway is well known for providing some of the best racing on the NASCAR Cup schedule. There are several reasons for that, including the track configuration and the progressive banking. But perhaps most of all is the track surface which wears tires and leads to a lot of comers and goers throughout a run. Tire management will be a key for drivers, with those that are easier on their tires early in a run gaining back track position later in a run. High tire wear also helps bring in the team aspect of the sport, with crews being called on to make four-tire stops all race long. A tenth of a second or two gained on pit road is a major advantage on a mile-and-a-half speedway where aerodynamics is so important.

“Homestead ranks right up there with Darlington as tracks with the highest tire wear on the Cup schedule,” said Greg Stucker, Goodyear’s director of racing. “We will see lap-time fall-off of more than two seconds over the course of a run, so tire management will be important. Being an intermediate speedway, teams will again look to get the rear end of the car down and sealed off as much as possible to gain downforce and an aerodynamic advantage. One way they do that is dropping the air pressure in the rear tires, which is always a risk vs. reward proposition. Going too low on the rear pressures can cause those tires to over-deflect, sustain damage to the components and cause a problem later in a run.”

– Fourth Cup race on this tire set-up in 2023: Being on 18-inch bead diameter tires, NASCAR Cup teams will run a different tire set-up than those in the Xfinity and Craftsman Truck Series at Homestead this week . . . this is the same combination of left- and right-side tires Cup teams ran at Homestead last season . . . this is the same tire set-up these teams have run on the Charlotte oval and at Darlington this season . . . Cup teams have also run this right-side tire code at Kansas, Las Vegas, Nashville and Pocono in 2023 . . . with this 18-inch tire, and its lower profile sidewall, NASCAR Cup cars will not run inner liners in any of their tires.

Ive always liked Phoenix as well though. Either one could host, as well as Vegas
 
My biggest complaint about Phoenix isn't the track itself, it's the length of the race. 300 miles is too short to close the season and decide a champion

I couldn't agree more, how can the championship race be the shortest of the year?? Makes no sense at all!

312 miles at Phoenix isn’t all that different in time duration from 400 miles at Homestead, or much of the rest of the schedule either. It’s a shorter, flatter track that drives slower.

Homestead 2017-2019:

I have advocated for moving the Coca Cola 600 to the finale. Having to survive the longest race of the year to win the championship would be pretty cool.
I was just coming to suggest that if they ever do decide to get rid of the Roval, they should instantly move the 2nd Charlotte race to championship weekend. Makes so much sense with everything being centralized there. All of the teams already take pride in winning at the home track, imagine winning a title there.
 
telling you all, a track rotation for the Championship Race amongst Phoenix-Nashville Fair Grounds-Charlotte Oval-Atlanta(It wont race as a superspeedway I believe when the pavement ages)-Homestead-Texas-Las Vegas- Fontana would be neat.
 
Personally I despise this playoff format. A guy could have a dozen wins in the season with the rest of the final four have 2 or 3 and something simple like a flat tire in the finale can kill his chances for the Cup. But that's just me, I'm old school. I remember the days when a guy just had to start the last race to be champ. Then you could just focus on the race, not just 4 drivers out of nearly 40.

I once suggested this here before and was told that Charlotte was too cold in November. Ending the season in Charlotte would mean more than somewhere like Phoenix or Vegas or even Miami. All of the guys at the shop could attend the championship race, people could bring their families, the champion could go home and sleep in his own bed that night...etc.

In theory that's great but I feel it loses it's national series feel and becomes more of a regional thing in that case.

In every sport you go somewhere to win the championship, not your home turf

Odd, how the World of Outlaws can end their season in Charlotte on the exact same weekend.
