Pre-Race - 105th Indianapolis 500

Excited for Carb Day, but I feel like something is missing and finally figured it out.
N O F R E E D O M 100. I enjoyed that race a lot and seemed to always give a great finish.
It ran every year from 2003- 2019. Notable past winners include ,Ed Carpenter '03,Newgarden '11,Harvey '15,
Gabby Chavez '14, Matheus Leist '17, Colton Herta '18 , and the most recent ,Oliver Askew '19.
Hope it comes back in the future.
 
Speaking of which, every May I dig out my copy of Andy Granetelli's book "They call me Mr.500" and read the rocket car chapter. The rest of the book is a great read too, but you'll laugh so hard you'll cry. Pretty sure you can get it as a Kindle file off Amazon for next to nothing.

No Pit Stop competition either. Hopefully next year it all goes back to normal, this Carb Day may be a wash anyways.

What is Conor Daly's problem?

Guy's calling people psycho and the only thing psychotic I saw was that really late attempt to pass a car that was already on the bottom of the track.

As much as I don't care for Santino, Conor was about to pull an idiotic move in going low right before the entry of turn three.

Should have gone high, but eh its easy to say from home.
 
Between the downforce changes and the cooler weather through this weekend there seems like a lot more optimism for a good show than the last three years.
 
I've never been a fan of Will Power. I don't even know why I don't like him... but I just don't. And I'm a bit of a Team Penske homer too. Pagenaud is one of my favorites; Newgarden is also; and I wish all the best for McLaughlin. But I've never warmed up to Will Power, although I do respect his sizable accomplishments in IndyCar.

Having said all that, last weekend revealed Will Power at his very, very best. Befuddled and embarrassed at his lack of qualifying speed, and with all the cameras and all the media focused squarely on him, Power endured the qualifying crisis with grace and dignity and genuine humbleness. No excuses, no lashing out at others... just straight answers to all the media questions, and a display of grit and determination to give 110%.

And 110% was just barely enough. I mean the guy put it in the wall off turn 2, but stood on the gas and *never lifted* and put it in the show. And when it was over, he had a warm hug for quasi-teammate Simona, and then sought out the two guys who didn't make the show. Very classy.

Will I become a fan of Power after this show of genuine character? I don't know. Maybe. He's certainly deserving.
 
Until he wins the 500 one time, I will root for Ed Carpenter. He lives and breathes for the Indy 500 in the old school way, and those are the ones I like to see chugging the milk and kissing the bricks.

I don't normally root for drivers who already have two Indy 500 wins to get a third, but I find myself powerfully attracted to Takuma Sato. He is a journeyman IndyCar driver, but a true maestro of the 500. I like and appreciate the distinction between the two. Sato is like Arie Luyendyk and I mean that in the best possible way.

J.R. Hildebrand, driving for A.J. Foyt... now that would be a delicious redemption story. And Sebastien Bourdais also driving for Super Tex... I like both these guys quite a lot.

Josef Newgarden, Simon Pagenaud, Alexander Rossi... hell yes to these. That's my list. Lots of fast young guys for future years, not this year.

👍 I hope you do. If he never wins another, I'm glad I was there when he finally conquered that place.

Always! I, and I think most fans of this race would be ecstatic if he could snag one. :cool:
 
I would love to see Rick Mears win... but since that ship has sailed I will have to go with Courtney's Husband. :D

I never do for many reasons. With this race especially, it is the harsh reality that there is a chance someone will run their final race. Those who not only survived the previous 104 races, but also won, are the biggest badasses around. Every lap of this race is always cherished by this guy

I don't care for him simply because I think he has a stupid name. If there was a driver named Justin Case, I wouldn't like him either.

Yes, I'm irrational.
 
I can't stand Carpenter but I hope he finally gets a win...it would be the closest thing we will have seen compared to Earnhardt's first 500.
