Dave "The Godfather" Moody COMMENTARY: Busch's Outbursts Come With A Cost

Kyle was unhappy Sunday.
Let’s be clear about one thing, right up front.

Kyle Busch can say anything he wants, anytime he wants, about anyone he wants. Sunday’s post-race, in-car radio tirade was nothing new; the mercurial Joe Gibbs Racing driver has made a habit of such outbursts over the years.

It cannot, however, have been good for him, his team or its engine builder.

Busch dominated most of Sunday’s AAA 400 at Dover International Speedway, leading the field for an incredible 302 of 400 laps. In the end, however, he came up short on fuel, pitting with just 10 laps remaining en route to a disappointing seventh-place finish. The incident clearly touched a raw nerve with Busch. He was a vocal critic of JGR’s decision to outsource their Sprint Cup engine program to Toyota Racing Development during the offseason, and has remained outspoken through a maddening season of engine-related failures and DNFs.

At the drop of the checkered flag Sunday, Busch unleashed a torrent of expletive-laden unhappiness, calling TRD “piece of s#*t mother@$%&ers” over his in-car radio. “Thanks a lot, TRD for @$%&ing up another one,” he said, prompting crew chief Dave Rogers to key his own microphone in an effort to block any further profanity.

“Yeah, nice try covering up the mic,” said Busch to Rogers seconds later. “Whatever.”

Busch was absolutely entitled to his anger. Losing a race he so thoroughly dominated was understandably upsetting, in the aftermath of a season filled with disappointment, underachievement and unhappiness.

He is far from alone in that regard, however.

Toyota Racing Development has supplied engines for six NASCAR Sprint Cup Series entries this season. Those six cars have suffered nine engine failures; either on race day or in practice or qualifying.

Too many engine issues in 2012.

By comparison, Hendrick Engines has supplied horsepower for seven cars in 2012. Those cars have suffered 17 engine failures; including four each for title contenders Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson. Both drivers have voiced unhappiness with those numbers, and rightly so. Unlike Busch, however, they have done so in the privacy of the transporter or the conference room, where teammates can speak openly and honestly with disgracing anyone publically. It’s also difficult to imagine either Gordon or Johnson calling anyone a “piece of s#*t mother@$%&er."

As a result, they are far more likely than Busch to find an actual solution to the problem.

For the record, any conversation that begins with one party being called a “piece of s#*t mother@$%&er” is destined to be counterproductive. Even when uttered in the heat of battle, that kind of language alienates people. After hearing Busch’s comments Sunday, no one at Toyota Racing Development thought, “how can we help that young man be more successful on the race track?” Negativity and name-calling damage relationships, and whether anyone admits it or not, Busch’s comments have damaged the working relationship between JGR and TRD.

Busch is currently preparing to negotiate a new, multi-year contract with Gibbs. That contract will be paid, at least in part, by Toyota. The automaker competes in NASCAR for one reason; to sell cars and trucks. Their willingness to continue making a multi-millionaire of a man who consistently criticizes their products and bad-mouths their personnel may not last forever.

Busch has the right to explode in expletive-laced anger whenever the mood strikes him. NASCAR Sprint Cup Series racing is an intense, emotional sport, and there are as many opportunities to lose control of one’s emotions as there are to lose control of the race car. Unfortunately, those outbursts damage race teams, and Busch knows it.

A few years ago, Busch said he regretted chastising his race team publically, knowing those comments to be hurtful and destructive. “I have been a negative influence on my team in the past,” he said, “and I regret that. Unfortunately, I’m an emotional person who sometimes says things before I think. Then I have to go back and try to apologize.

“I don’t want to be that person in the future,” said Busch. “I want to be better.”
Sadly, that’s a battle Busch must continue to fight.

I wonder if there is room on that Furniture Row therapy couch for another Busch. I tell you what these guys need. A punch in the face everytime the act up.

I'd say he's headed for yet another meltdown and I'm wondering will he go after a chase driver or pick on someone like Ragan or Smith or even Patrick

Maybe he'll tangle with Edwards or Newman ;)

He's going to mouth off one to many times to his team and end up spitting out teeth

I've been worried about this for since Chicago when he roughed up Harvick and Keselowski. I really think his twisted mind is looking for an excuse to lash out. We all know he's more than willing to wreck a championship contender, because he's done it twice already.

Kyle is right though, those motors he has had this year have been **** and he's also allowed to say whatever he pleases on his radio. It's not like he was calling them out after the race was over and cursing at them.

Must be a slow news day for Moody. Digging up this nonsense yet again. A better article would have been about why Kyle and Toyota keep having engine troubles over and over.

Attack Moody? The excuses people make for that jackass Kyle are astounding. Let me impart some condensed Moody wisdom upon you.

If Kyle's dumbassery hadn't trumped Biffles rant, Moody may have wrote about that...probably because it's so UNUSUAL (flashing letters) for Biffle to treat people like that.

I'm having trouble even having this convo because these concepts being raised in Kyles defense are so foreign to my value set.

It's over the radio when he was aggravated and Kyles right, his motors have been a piece of sh*t. Kyle has done nothing wrong this year.

Greg Biffle curses out and flips out at his crew all the time but you don't see these articles about him. It's only the Busch brothers witch hunt that I'm sick and tired of.

I'd rather see these guys show emotion, whether right or wrong then see Jimmie "no emotion" Johnson and Carl "I wanna pretend I'm a good loser" Edwards.

I may not like Brad K but at least he backs it up when it he runs his mouth like a retard, or should he shut his mouth too and become vanilla as well? We can't have it both ways. People complain about the lack of energy and emotions from drivers and then when we get that they complain it's wrong.

Greg Biffles rant was played as well.

but where is the article? where is anyone calling him out on it? He does it all the time too, Dover wasn't the first time he acted like that but I can't recall anyone posting articles or talking about him on here either. It's pick and choose who we want to bash for their attitudes and the way they talk on the radio.

If you have no problem with Kyle calling TRD “piece of s#*t mother@$%&ers” over his radio, there's little motivation for me to continue.

Should have he had said *************? no of course not but piece of ****? Absolutely. If they did their job right Kyle would have been in the chase and might have had a few more wins this year. Switching over to TRD has been a complete disaster and they are the reason why I think Hamlin won't win the championship this year.

People are used to Ford drivers bitchin and moaning.:D Nothing new there.

Hamlin made the Chase with the same engines?????????????

Hamlin made the Chase with the same engines?????????????

Kyle had Dover and Pocono back to back where both engines failed and he finished 29th and 30th. Those 2 engines don't fail and Kyle is most likely in the Chase right now.

TRD has been better of late but I am worried that Denny is going to end up losing a chance to win due to these engines.

Yeah it can't be Kyle's driving style that may be blowing engines????Every time a engine blows it's the engines fault.Never the driver?

If someone wants to write an article about Biffle - or any other driver - I say go for it.

Did the #18 even have engine trouble? I thought he had to pit for fuel like many of the cars.

I say let him dig his own hole and then fill it with tears when no top team with go near him. It won't be my fault, it wont be the media's fault and wont be the members here who are to blame. That responsibilty will rest squarely on his own shoulders.

It's been a problem all season, says it right in the article. "Toyota Racing Development has supplied engines for six NASCAR Sprint Cup Series entries this season. Those six cars have suffered nine engine failures; either on race day or in practice or qualifying."

They didn't have engine troubles but he was complaining cause they sacrificed fuel mileage in the engines to get more horsepower out of them.

With the way Kyles season has gone can anyone really blame him for flipping out after losing the race like he did on Sunday?

Here's a even better tidbit from the same article.

Hendrick has 5 out of 7 in the Chase with almost double the engine failures??? and like Ted said MWR is using TRD and they have 2 out of 3 cars in the Chase.Face it the driving God just couldn't drive his way into the Chase.

I'm not in the car so I'm not going to put myself in his shoes but his history does dictate that he's a hothead and perhaps needs to control his mouth a bit more often. The # 24 had a pretty rough season and I'd be surprised if he behaved in that manner or at least to that extreme. I also was expecting Edwards to go Sally before KyBu did, actually.

You are right and Kyle definitely wasn't that good this year but I was just stating that in his mind those 2 back to back races with engine failures during the race screwed his chances the most at making the chase. I can't blame him though for thinking that way cause if he has an average finish in both those engine failure races and he's in the chase.

Kyle hurt his chase hopes by trying to rough up the same driver a 2nd time at Watkins Glen. If Kyle isn't way out front, he does stupid stuff like running across someones front end on the last lap. Maybe that's why he constantly burns his tires up stretching out a huge, and useless, lead.

I heard that the first time you said it.

Wow another hate-on article about Kyle Busch.

There's a surprize :sarcasm:

Well, we do enjoy it from time to time and it satiates those who enjoy others disliking their favorite driver - why that is , I have no idea .

You are probably correct although there are few that will admit it.

Kyle has a problem, and as delicate as Hamlin may be, he is demonstrating that Kyle isn't getting everything out a Gibbs car, or fulfilling his potential.
Hamlin has already come much closer to putting a complete season together, in 2010, and during this current season, while Kyle has not done as much with a Gibbs car.

Kyle has some valid reasons to want more out of TRD, but even when you are right you can't routinely rub people's faces in their own crap. Any self respecting person will eventually lose their patience, and walk away, or determine to settle the score in a way that satisfies their own little justice system.

I was hoping he would learn from his brothers self inflicted damages, or that a smart and attractive wife would be able to refine his personal skills, along with nurturing the animal that is an incredible driver.
But I just don't know if Kyle will ever get it, he obviously is a very angry person, that is unable to suppress the rage.
If he ever hits a slump, like a season with no wins, he better pack his bags, because he doesn't offer anything else, nor does he foster improvement.

I hope it ends better than my expectations.

I heard both of the tirades on the radio. I could not understand a word Biffle said but Kyle, on the other hand, was quite articulate.
