True, but a softer tire would mean more tire falloff, resulting in even more passing opportunities for drivers who can wheel a car around the track when grip is minimal.

They are only going to try to hold the leader up so they don't get passed. Once they are a lap down, they aren't going to be as agressive with the 2nd place car.
