Racing Name Game

Randy "Macho Man" Savage.

I have no idea what he might have to do with racing but I just felt like throwing his name out there.

Ricky Bobby

Talladega Nights

BTW, I am glad I didn't pay to see that movie...

Bill Elliot - He raced Cup starting in 1976 and only has one Championship and only 44 wins, yet he was voted most popular driver 16 times. How in the heck did that happen? Was it his sponsors? Mostly Bud and McDonalds? Was it that he set the speed record at 212.809mph? I don't know, I'm baffled.

He admits in his biography he has no idea how the hell he won it so much either, he claims he had a very active fan club. Only 44 wins? thats a lot also known as 15th all time. Plus 3 runner ups. Yeah I was an Elliott fan before I became a Kasey fan

I don't want to derail the thread so I'll respond only this once. 44 wins is impressive. But not conducive to getting most poplular driver 16 times. In the years he won most popular driver there were many other drivers that won a whole lot more than he did.

I think most people would agree that Dale Sr. was the most poplular driver in Cup, or at least the most well known, and yet he didn't earn the most popular driver award until after he died. RIP Dale, still love you.

JOONYER has only 18 CUP wins in 13 CUP seasons (eighteen!) yet he has been the most popular driver every single year since 2003.
'Splain that to me Lucy!

Polularity doesn't necessarily have to equate to a certain number of wins. Hell, if that or championships counted, JJ would be extremely popular, but somehow he's just not.

Wins translate in to popularity in other sports. Just not racing.

Not to hijack this thread back to where it started, but...

I hear what you are saying and I think I can explain "part" of the situation. Jr is the son of a legend and it's obvious a lot of Dale Sr's fans have become Jr fans. Everyone knows that.

But what still blows me away is the Dale Sr didn't earn the most popular driver until after he died.

Not to mention when he won it that year Bill voluntarily took his name off the ballot

Driver of the Number 6, who has reportedly been told that he is free to "search for other opportunities for next year", which in English means sayonara!

Little Joe Jernigan

Joseph "Little Joe" Jernigan ran just four races in his NASCAR career. The Norfolk, Virginia driver died in his final start at the Royal Speedway in Richmond, Virginia. He turned over on the backstretch of the Richmond track as was facing oncoming traffic. Another race car struck his vehicle and Jernigan was killed instantly.
