If you're a racing fan for any period of time, you're going to experience the disappointment of the 'rain delay' or, worse yet, postponed. I've been going to Indy Time Trials longer than some of our members have been alive, and there was a stretch in the late 80's/early 90's when it rained almost every year. It's truly a surreal feeling to be in a crowd of 100,000+ having a simultaneous 'aw, hell' moment.
My favorite weather related racing story is the second Brickyard 400 in 1995. It rained all day long, but our tickets were just under the new suites on the inside of the front stretch, and we just stayed in our seats emptying out the coolers, watching wreckers and emergency vehicles drive around trying to disperse the water. NASCAR never said anything about whether they were going to postpone the race until the next day (the first few Brickyards were on Saturday, so they had Sunday if need be) or try to get it in, and they were up against daylight. Lots of folks gave up and started heading home, but it finally quit raining in the afternoon and they started drying the track. We could see rain clouds to the west from our seats, but it stayed away. Finally, with maybe 5 minutes' warning, the cars were started in the garage area and drove straight out onto the track in turn 1, did two warm up laps, and dropped the green flag. It happened so quickly, it seemed like we almost missed it, and we were still in our seats! I remember seeing people running back into the track with only about 25 laps to go, and callers on sports radio ripped NASCAR a new one for a week! It was well worth it though, as the black 3 got the victory!
