Yes, and somehow he finished 3 positions in front of Jr. riding on the side of Jr's car.
I thought this was interesting. Looking back @ Johnson's restrictor plate finishes this year he had a Daytona DNF, a Talladega DNF, & another Daytona DNF. Seeing as he rode back to the garage on the side of Jr's car how did he not get a DNF for this race? I had to have missed something. I've got to go back and watch the finish again.
I do see that they did score him on the lead lap at the end so I'm guessing that he must have crossed the start/finish line and then not be able to get going?
I didn't see it, but that's what JJ said. He kept it rolling and probably blew the engine grinding it across the line. I watched that video 10 to 12 times, focusing on someone different. There's some real 'damn lucky' moments in there.
Regan Smith was the most impressive. He got slammed into another car and was the meat in a 3 wide wall sandwich right in the middle of that mess. He stayed on the throttle and somehow drove away while dodging 3 spinning cars by inches. Top 10.
Denny and Newman were at the back in about 30th, along with Kvapil, who finished 8th. Newman checkup up and waited for the mess to clear, which seemed to take 3 or 4 seconds, then drove thru for a 9th. Denny, who was about 3 carlengths behind Newman when the mess started, stood on the brakes and spun himself off the track and stalled the car. He had more time to react properly than Newman did had he not panicked. It was funny listening to Denny describe his calm and cool move after the race, which had no basis in reality. He even mentioned how he maintained pace. Without the wreck, he was about 25th but got a generous 17th. If he hadn't panicked, he would have been top 10 with Newman and Kvapil.
Keselowski got damn lucky. He was running around 20th when the wreck happened. He did a great job staying off Kyle by anticipating the wreck and moving down to the apron. He then slowed for an opening to get by. Just as Jr came down, Kez moved down toward the grass, which was the wrong move. LaBonte, for some unknown reason, had gotten down by the grass inside Kez and hit the gas and ran into the side of the #2, pushing him up the track and avoiding a T-bone of Jr. and probably ending up with a 12th or 13th. He was 4th when the yellow came out and still doing about 80 mph, but nascar said he was sliding sideways so that speed didn't count toward maintaing pace, which reporters had never heard before. Brad got a 7th and he really didn't care about the 3 positions.
Best I can guess, JJ was running around 20th too, so he about broke even in the wreck. Kez seemed to gain 13 points vs his video running position, while Denny gained about the same. We probably missed out on a 5 way race to the Cup, but we're lucky to still have a 2.5 way race, but it would have been great to have Clint and Kasey in it too.
