Tesla in Autopilot mode crashes into fire truck

A Tesla Model S crashed into a fire truck while driving down a California highway, according to Culver City, California, firefighters.
A tweet by the local firefighter's union Monday showed a photo of a Tesla Model S with its nose wedged under the back end of a fire truck and its hood badly wrinkled. The car had been traveling at 65 miles an hour, the tweet said.

"The driver reports the vehicle was on Autopilot. Amazingly there were no injuries!" according to the tweet.

In its owner's manual, Tesla (TSLA) repeatedly warns drivers to pay attention to the road while using the semi-autonomous Autopilot system. Tesla classifies Autopilot it as a "driver assistance system" and not "autonomous driving." In other words, the system is only designed to reduce the driver's workload by taking over repetitive and mundane tasks like staying in the lane and avoiding other moving cars.

Personally I love the line about the system is only designed to reduce the driver's workload by taking over repetitive and mundane tasks like staying in the lane and avoiding other moving cars.

Repetitive and mundane tasks like staying in the lane and avoiding other moving cars? o_O That seems like kind of an important part of driving. They may want to upgrade that software a bit and make that a higher priority.

I hear the software upgrade is gonna be called the Montoya patch.

Hell they can't build a car/truck without multiple call backs, I can only imagine what the future will bring.

What car company doesn't have recalls?
FTR I am not a fan of these autonomous cars, not at all. Hell I've had cruise control in my cars since the mid 70's and don't use it. It's really useless where I live and I don't use it even on our long distance trips.
Something about feeling the gas pedal move away from my foot to speed up...nah.

I'm pretty sure that they will end up finding that the issue was a minor calculation error. The program behind Tesla's Autopilot Mode made a simple calculation mistake by moving the decimal two places to the left, thus only following the firetruck by 5.00 feet instead of the mandatory 500 feet. I'm sure it will all be addressed in the next update released.

Technology is lost with you, crui see e control is awesome on a big long stretch of highway, been using it on all my cars for 30 years.

Cruise control is also something that I use often. My trips across PA are about 300 on I80. I set cruise control when I get on the interstate and use it the entire way. The only time it shuts off is if I have to stop for gas or I catch up to someone running a little slower that I can't immediately get by. I never use it when I am towing or on wet/snowy roads though.

As I said

Now if you are even remotely familiar with New England you know we don't have many ''big long stretch(es) of highway''. On the few we do there's a multitude of jackwagons that you have to deal with negating the use of cruise control.
I never used cc when towing either.

New cooler I ordered arrived today. This time I got a Siberian 85 quart. Should be awesome for camping, especially at the beach. Comparable to the Yeti but not quite the price.

Yeah, I should have clarified that I only use it on the interstates. Personally, I don't think it makes sense to use it anywhere else.

I had to call the USPS this morning to check where a package is at, and they said your current wait time is 1 hour 20 minutes.

I've never had to call them but I could imagine. There are times when I order things online only to find out that it's via USPS. I cringe every time.

Broke the Jeep windshield this morning. Was removing the snow from last night. Grabbed the wiper blade on the drivers side only to have it disconnect form the arm. The spring did it's spring thing and pulled the empty arm right back against the windshield with enough force to put about a 3 inch crack in it. No doubt, it'll spread with the constant warm/cold/warm cycle this time of the year. Repairing/replacing the Jeep windshield is pretty much a yearly occurrence anyway with stone chips and the like.

Watched the video a day or two ago and it made me jump.

This morning, showed it to my Bride, suppressed the screen, and waited t see her reaction. She literally jumped from her chair!! Priceless facial expression when the "surprise" came.

Leased a new car in November. It came with Sirius XM free month free trial period.
Two weeks before free trial ended began receiving letters advertising special deals, "six months for $29.99 or twelve months for $99.00, standard package." I did not respond.

Three months was up yesterday. I called to determine cost of service with taxes applied each month. Placed on hold then told service I wanted was $15.99 per month plus $4.57 in taxes, total $20.56 per month.
I asked about the three month deal and the operator acted as if it was something she never heard of so I explained I had been receiving these letters offering the rates listed earlier. She said she had to check with her supervisor as my subscription had expired. Placed on hold and I waited, and waited, and when the timer on cell phone went past twenty-one minutes, I ended the call.

This morning, in my email, was an notice from Sirius XM thanking me for renewing their service for six months and I would be receiving an invoice via USPS, shortly. HUH? :idunno:

Had Sirius XM several years ago and tried to cancel service as we were not using it enough to justify expense. The only way you can cancel service is to call them and numerous attempts, being placed on hold for more than fifteen minutes each time before getting ticked and ending call, contacted credit card company when I lost my credit card. I got a new card with new number. This stopped the automatic payments and seemed to be the only way to end service with Sirius XM.

Sirius XM has some good features for people who spend a lot of time in a vehicle but if subscriber wants to cancel, Sirius XM makes it extremely difficult.

I had a similar experience with Sirius. A used car that I bought came with a free three month trial period...
First, the Sirius trial shut off after three weeks. I called Sirius, and after some run-around they restored it. But not after pestering me to sign up, and give them a credit card number (which I didn't do).
Then their signal quit again after another three weeks. At that point I didn't care, so I forgot about it. Until they started calling me at dinner time twice a week. Told them to stop calling me or I'd report them to my State Consumer Protection Agency.
That stopped the calls, but triggered mailed offers from them at a rate of about one every other week.
After about a year, the calls started again. They would not take "not interested" as an answer and insisted upon arguing with me about it. So I read them the Riot Act.
I was able to block their calls using my phone's options, and they weren't smart enough to get around it.
Still get mail offers from them from time to time... I put them straight into the recycle bin.

OnStar was like that too. That car also came with a temporary free OnStar account. I never used it, and didn't buy a subscription since I already had services that did the same things for cheaper.
One day while I was driving, OnStar called me out of the blue and tried to sell me a subscription. Startled me since I was just driving along and all of a sudden they're talking at me. I told them not to do that again or they'd be responsible for any wreck they caused. Later I disabled the OnStar circuit.
So they started calling me at home. Tried to scare me into thinking it would be dangerous not to subscribe. I explained to them how dangerous it was getting for them to keep bothering me.
At least at that point they gave up.

Learned that if I buy another car from a dealership that offers to activate free trials of either service, to decline it.

DPK, I had 90 qt Igloo cooler on my boat, I learned real quick to load it up with ice and stuff, like adult beverages, when it was on board. Loaded up it took two men and a boy to carry it.
btw, the fire warning placard. I like the one where if asked what steps would you take in case of fire in your workplace. Effin big ones isn't the correct answer,,or so they say.

No wonder these damn cars are so expensive. I wonder what production on this commercial cost?

Well I see at least travel costs to at least 4 continents helicopter costs and who knows what countries charged them to film in historical sites. Also how did that advertise Audi?

Was just surfing Youtube for some Jet Boat videos down near Queenstown in the South Island and found this one. I think I want one of these tiny jet boats...looks like fun.

Watched these crazy bastards on TV a while back. The NZ equivalent of mud bogging down South?

Went to the zoo today. It's only ten minutes away.....actually it next door to Western Springs my local dirt track.
I became a Friend of the Zoo so now have an annual membership. Cool.
