8. I'm surprised by the number of posts in this thread which indicate many of us are more into roller derby than automobile racing. I hope Nascar doesn't pander to fans who judge the product based mainly on the amount of beating and banging. JMO.
As usual, I will refrain from rating a race in which my bias clouds my judgement (which it does anyway, but I digress). HOWEVER, I cannot like this post more. I felt that this was a brilliant race (which I attended). I go to all of the sessions in the weekend so that I can think about what the race might bring--it's part of what I love about this sport. Now, a surprise is okay, but generally I like to see the guys who have been good all weekend be good again when it matters the most. I got that last weekend. Everybody who had been to Friday practice and watched qualifying knew that the 4, 14, 41, and 78 were the cars to beat. The race played out that way with an awesome duel between crew chiefs as the deciding factor. Generally the 4 was best, but the 78 was very close before the deciding strategy. I didn't breathe for the last 25 laps. Additionally, the 18 took a dog **** car, and delivered another top 5 because that's what he does. The driving was brilliant--watching these guys wrestle through 7 and into the S's, enter 10, and stab the throttle on exit is absolute magic. I will tell you this--nobody exits 10 the way the 4 does. Nobody. The guy is unreal in terms of managing entry in order to nail exit. It's visible in Sonoma from my grandstand seat, and I was captivated by it. Just fabulous.
On leaving the track, I knew what I would hear. I kind of shut all of that bull**** off because it's just that. This was the best race of the two I have attended at Sonoma. Now, let's talk about how this track is run......Well, it's run exactly the way ALL tracks should be run. You get EVERYTHING with a standard ticket package plus Pit Pass. My grandstand seat, plus a Pre-Race Pass made me eligible for a Cold Pit Pass on all three days. Got close to the cars and into the pit boxes. This is where Sonoma really starts to separate itself from other tracks I have been to.....On Friday, the Garages opened for an hour. You could stroll through like the big timers. After the race, you can access Victory Lane. No charge. It's close to the grandstands. We hung out, and took pictures of Martin celebrating. The shuttle service at the track was top notch. Air conditioned, and frequent runs got us everywhere we needed to go. Just fabulous. So, at the end of the day, this was an absolutely awesome trip, and delivered everything I expected and more. I am hooked. I would love to see some of the parking access roads paved. The dust is a struggle when combined with the heat, but I am splitting hairs. It will come in time. This is how we make NASCAR appealing to the masses from a track management perspective. Awesome.
