Is anyone else sick of this?

Yeah, Earnhardt drove it. So what, it's just a number. He also drove no. 2, no. 8 and no. 15.

You'd think Austin Dillon was the second coming watching FOX1.

Cowhat aint no Dale Earnhardt and never will be IMO Nobody can fill those shoes.
Some folks wont ever be happy seeing that car on the track and Im one of em :(

In My Opinion Austin Dillon has shown that he is a very good young driver with a lot talent and plenty of potential, nothing more or nothing less no matter what his car number is so It shouldn't matter. Also It shouldn't matter if he want's to wear that hat. :D

I enjoyed a lot of Fox1's programming last night, but I intentionally skipped out on that. Figured it would be little more than a one-hour hype machine.

With that said, happy to see the number back. It had to happen at some point. Like Andy said, Dale drove other numbers, and lots of other people have driven the 3. As for Austin, of course he won't live up to Earnhardt, but who will? He's talented enough to deserve a shot at Cup. What he does with it is up to him now. Who knows, he might surprise us.

I'm sick of hearing it too. We all knew it would be back with Austin a long time ago. I don't think it was the number that made Dale, so I don't think it'll make Austin either. As I said before on here in other posts, I would've like to seen the style changed but a number is just a number.

It will be nice to see the 3 back on the track. When I see that number I'll think of Dale - not Dillon. I still think of Petty when I see the 43, Davey when I see the 28, and Allen K. when I see the 7, regardless of who is driving those cars. Come to think of it, when I see a lime green car I think of Danica... hmmm. I still haven't gotten used to seeing Kenseth in anything other than the 17.

Long time Earnhardt fan here and I love that the 3 is back on the track.

This has already been hashed and rehashed several times over and yet the people that complain about it the most seem to have to start yet another thread on the subject. I find that somewhat confusing. It's kind of like the guy/gal that calls NASCAR Radio to tell people to quit talking about Danica, Jimmie, Dale Jr, etc.....

I personally don't care who races what number but I can imagine that Nascar is hoping to pick up some buzz with it - both for and against. My guess is that it's here to stay.

The only reason the #3 is so popular and famous is because of his death from not wearing the HANS device (optional at the time) which could of stopped his whiplash. Before the death not that any people were big fans of Sr. It's the same thing with Jr. After his father died he became popular. Not because of personality or driving skill, just because of his father.

I'll weigh in.
Sure, Dale drove different numbered cars other than the 3. Dale Earnhardt was the face of NASCAR when he drove the 3. Richard Petty was the face of NASCAR in the 43. Although both drivers raced against each other, they were not dominant at the same time. Dale pretty much took over after Richard's reign.
That being said, when you think of the black 3, you think of Dale Sr.
When you think of the 43 (STP, Petty Blue, etc.), you think of Richard Petty.
You will never associate any other driver with either of those two car numbers, and you shouldn't. Both of those drivers were so influential to the sport of NASCAR, that I feel the numbers should be retired to preserve their history in the sport of stock car racing.
There will never be another Richard Petty.
There will never be another Dale Earnhardt.
They should retire the 3 and the 43. JMO.

To put it kindly this is the most ridiculous post of the day.

The worst part of will be the Fox broadcast team blathering on and on.

Intimidator this and that, rattling cages, one tuff customer etc on and on....

If a genuine memory was rekindled that would be fine. But they will do with the slightest resemblance, they probably have index cards with their jargon phrases.

More repeative then top 40 or country radio. And God help us when Austin wins his first race. They probably will lug around an 18 wheeler loaded up to do a pyro tech show wherever it happens first. They will illuminate the sky with a six thousand foot long "3".

this.

Dude its just a number. Driver makes the legacy, not the number. Dale's death was over a decade ago and the sport cannot grow if it intends to feed off of crap from the 90's. New faces in new places... lets roll.

Exactly, it is just a number. Why continue to complain? That's my point.

Do you think Earnhardt would want his number retired, or do you think he'd let some youngin have it to inspire him to drive his guts out, just like Dale did?

I agree with that, but almost nobody in the media will let this just be another thing. Dale was a polarizing figure to many, a lot of love or hate. The comparisons no matter how flimsy will get countless reps.

I have no clue what Dale would want. I didn't know him. I only rooted for him. I like seeing the number on the track again. Not a damn thing wrong with that. For the most part it's the fans that didn't like him that seem to be having the problem with it. I can't relate to that. That's their problem to deal with. Me, I'll be rooting for the car each week.

That's for the haters to deal with. I don't mind hearing about Dale Earnhardt. The novelty will wear off with the announcers but that isn't going to happen during Speedweeks. Some fans here are in for a rough time I guess.

Out of respect for Dale Chidress should have parked the number 3. Dale was killed in the number 3 and there are plenty of other numbers available. Its all about the money pure and simple. It may only be a number but it means a hell of a lot to some of us and obviously nothing to others.

Haha funny Big E not popular before his death....ummm me thinks you either weren't born then or didn't watch.

The boos for Dale quieted after his death but lots of folks never cared for him, I believe he once said he didnt care either way as long as people made noise when he was introduced
