Return of the "3"

That's for the haters to deal with. I don't mind hearing about Dale Earnhardt. The novelty will wear off with the announcers but that isn't going to happen during Speedweeks. Some fans here are in for a rough time I guess.

Boogity Boogity!!

maybe lotsa those ole fans who left b/c of new chase format.....
......will return now .....b/c #3 is back in cup ?

Hard to imagine fans who left because they didn't like a playoff format will return because of some number running around the track.

The only reason the #3 is so popular and famous is because of his death from not wearing the HANS device (optional at the time) which could of stopped his whiplash. Before the death not that any people were big fans of Sr. It's the same thing with Jr. After his father died he became popular. Not because of personality or driving skill, just because of his father.
BURP.

Out of respect for Dale Chidress should have parked the number 3. Dale was killed in the number 3 and there are plenty of other numbers available. Its all about the money pure and simple. It may only be a number but it means a hell of a lot to some of us and obviously nothing to others.

RCR doesn't own the number 3 and has no right to "park it".

That's true but he owns the rights to that particular style font slanted forward 3. I think that's what most of the people complaining about the 3's return don't like. Richard cashing in on Dales popularity with that style number.

After Davey Allison was killed Robert Yates continued using the number 28 but he changed the style of the number.

Some people feel that particular style 3 should not be used, not just any style number 3.

This is the first I have heard of anyone complaining about the 3 being slanted forward. I need to pay more attention.

Do you think anyone would even be talking about this if this was the style number on Dillon's car?

Dale's mother Martha was interviewed on her thoughts of the number returning to the track & she said she didn't mind Richard bringing the number back BUT that she did not want to see it in the format that Dale ran it & on a black car. By format I'm guessing she meant slanted forward. In the end, the number is leased to RCR to do with as he see's fit. IMO if anyone other than Jr is to run the number then why not Austin, he's won a NCTS & Busch Series championship so I think he'll do the number justice.

Valid point and I aint crazy about the return, but they are going to make a crap load of money with the souvenir trucks.

I cant speak for Dale and he didn't leave any written epistles but I am thinking (long sentence need a .)
That after the way he had to scrap for money to race in the 70s that he knew it is a business and a tough one at that.
Do what you gotta do.

Max Kansas can I ask a question: Just how long have you been watching NASCAR racing? Dale's death is not what made the number famous, his driving while he was alive is what did, the man was a legend in the flesh. I dunno how many races you got to go to while he was around but I know everytime I saw racing on TV or in person, about 3 out of every 5 people I saw were wearing #3 gear & waving Goodwrench flags. Just because he never won the most popular award while he was alive doesn't mean he didn't have legions of fans. Jr's fanbase was still in it's infancy when Sr got killed, there's no reason IMO to believe that had Sr lived, Jr wouldn't be as popular as he is maybe more because maybe his drive wouldn't have faded & maybe he'd have a championship or 2. Maybe DEI would still exist & be one of the most powerful cup teams on the circuit right now & maybe Taylor would've decided to become a driver & be the hot chick on the circuit sponsored by GoDaddy who was on the pole last year for the 500 with only one difference, She Wins! Death is not what made the man famous, & it ain't even about the number, it's about the man, Dale Earnhardt. Mr. Wrangler, One Tough Customer!

I honestly wasn't around for the era.

I honestly wasn't around for the era.

1. Not surprised
2. I appreciate and respect your honesty.
3. I posted something silly once myself.
4. Welcome to RF.

I honestly wasn't around for the era.

And this right here is what all the Earnhardt worshipers are going to have to deal with. A LOT of younger people who will be watching weren't watching during the Earnhardt Era. It's nice to demand that they know who he is and demand they worship him but it'd be like people expecting you to know what it was like to live during the Civil War. Earnhardt's been dead for 13 years. It's time to move on.

And moving on doesn't mean talking about Austin Dillon around the clock solely because he's driving Earnhardt's car.

No offense to Max but perhaps the newer fans that weren't around during that era shouldn't tell the fans that were around about Dale Earnhardt.

Lecture does not fit context. Read his OP. He made an allegation or claim about Earnhardts popularity that was erroneous. To his credit he had the integrity to admit his lack of experience when questioned.

I think most old timers are happy to see newer fans with less experience. I dont think anyone would have questioned his experience if he hadnt made the erroneous claim.

Again I am glad Max is here, not trying to rehash.

Yea, I give the man props for saying that.

I'm glad to have him on the board, and hope he keeps coming back.

Also pretty sure Johali and Whizzer lived through the civil war, perhaps still adversaries as a result :).

It's a ****** number. It's not like they stamped "BURN DALE SR" on the windshield Ricky Bobby style.

Let the boy make his own story with his number now.

That's fair. I'm merely saying, you now have fans coming in to the sport that don't know who Earnhardt was or weren't around when he raced. Fine that they know the history. Not fine with me that the sport revolves around Earnhardt. We are in a brand new NASCAR era. New car, new playoff system, new qualifying system, new everything. But FOX is stuck in February 18, 2001 along with a whole lot of fans.

It'd be like telling kids who are 13-years-old that they should remember everything about what happened on that terrible Tuesday morning and have the same emotional connection to the significance of that day that the rest of us have. It's absolutely not possible.

You're making way too much out of this.
Every sport remembers/mentions things that happened from past eras. Why should nascar fans and TV announcers stop mentioning things from past eras of the sport?

We shouldn't talk about a long list of past drivers like Davey, and Tim Richmond because the newer fans weren't around to see them race and or don't care about them?

A new fan to any sport understands that things happened in the sport before they became fans so I'm sure they can handle it when someone talks about it, or it's talked about on TV.

Yeah, I remember CBS running several segments on Johnny Unitas during last year's Super Bowl and mentioning Johnny Unitas every time Joe Flacco completed a pass. Every time Chris Davis hits a Home Run, MASN Sports goes in to a two minute segment where they worship Cal Ripken, Jr. and tell old Ripken stories.

No.

The amount of time that's devoted to Dale Earnhardt is something that's exclusive to NASCAR and FOX.

You're right.
I guess I missed the Dale Earnhardt tribute during the race tonight.

Ok but I am not following the point. Please explain
I believe I let my love of alliteration get the best of me in that duck commander thread and I posted that. I thought it was you who laughed at me for it but maybe not. It was actually pretty ridiculous and made me laugh at how out of hand the thread got. Anyway, I was quoting you to laugh at me. That's the tomato on me face.

You're right.
I guess I missed the Dale Earnhardt tribute during the race tonight.

There were HOURS of Earnhardt-centric programming last night on FOX Sports 1. And I've seen Earnhardt tributes during the Daytona 500 every year (except 2004 and 2006 when FOX didn't air the race) since Earnhardt's death.

If Austin Dillon takes the lead in the 500, Darrell Waltrip and Larry McReynolds will spend countless minutes talking about Earnhardt.

Talking about the history of the sport is fine. When a driver does something and it's reminiscent of something Dale or Cale Yarbrough or Bobby Allison did, it's fine. Having a segment in pre-race devoted to talking about drivers who built the sport (like TNT used to do with Pride of NASCAR) is fine. Having a show that airs regularly that talks about various different drivers of generations past, like NFL Network does, is fine. Hall of Fame stuff is fine. But that's not what we get with NASCAR and FOX. It's all Earnhardt, all the time.

I'm not trying to minimize the importance of February 18, 2001 or who Dale Earnhardt was as a driver, but that was not the only defining moment in the sport's history and he was not the only great driver in generations past.

I bet most new fans wouldn't even know who I was talking about if I said "Silver Fox" and I bet they wouldn't know what the significance of the Streamline Hotel is to NASCAR racing.

Well, there's going to be a difference of opinion on this subject forever.
I doubt "new" fans will be around as long as some of us old fans have been around.

You've been watching for decades. Good for you. Want a ******* cookie?
I do not like cookies, cakes or pies. If you have a medium-rare, grilled rib-eye, I'll take that instead.
I doubt "new" fans will be fans for decades. They do not have the stamina. Everyone nowadays wants instant gratification.

Hey new fans and Andy. There was a guy named Dale Earnhardt that raced in the previous era and we're gonna talk about him.

Yeah, let's running off new fans because YOU can't deal with the fact that they don't bow to the ground below Earnhardt's feet.

I'm standing up for the sport as a whole here. It's more than just one dead guy.
