Shocking financials...

All these changes are chasing after a younger demographic which every major sport has a problem with.At the college football games I attend, the students section empties out at halftime. We were at a Major League Baseball game a few weeks ago,at 7th inning stretch people started leaving.I guess it's just different nowadays.
The smartphone (and the addiction it creates) has destroyed attention spans. I had one and noticed the "pull" of constant stimulation and subsequently got rid of it. Do you own your phone or does it own you? Most young people can't go 10 minutes without checking their phones or couldn't navigate 30 miles without GPS. I hate to sound like a grumpy old man (I'm only 43) but Steve Jobs put a computer in our pockets and what do we do with it? Check Facebook, Instagram and Twitter when not surfing porn or watching cat videos.

I agree with your sentiments as open wheel has made strides but in reality where else did they have to go? What I like about the growth is that it is small but steady and to me that means it can be sustainable. I haven't done the math but I assume if the ratings were not buoyed by the Indy 500 race viewership would be well under 1 million viewers and that is not very good.
Decline to the point where the series would go under, get bought out and taken over, or just plateau and hover around. Thankfully none of that happened.

2015 and 2016 were the most-watched seasons for the NBC Sports Group since they acquired rights and 2017 is trending ahead of 2016 so far. NBC getting the full season once the current deals expire is probably the best thing that can happen.

there was an article on 60 minutes recently about how content engineers are using the phone and sites like facebook to addict phone users. It is called brain hacking. Everywhere I go when around people I see it working..Pretty interesting, you are right on..users can't go for long without the psychological buzz they get.

I experienced the "phantom buzzing" of my phone in my pocket and said eff this. My coworkers make fun of me with my "grandpa" phone but they are standing around addicted to their own personal master. My phone just makes calls and texts and costs $15 brand new if I break it.

Last place I worked before retiring people were losing their jobs because of them. Pretty bad when it comes down to that.

My friend's son (when he entered the workforce) exclaimed with indignation when the Wendy's manager told his crew that phones are no longer allowed on your person when working in the restaurant. He thought it was a denial of his basic human rights.:D

I had complaints from employees to the Labor Board because I would not allow them cell phones on a construction site. I won my case on the safety aspect. It came down to, if they ruled they could have cell phones then they would be responsible for any injuries. They ruled in my favor after which I fired all of them accept one apprentice.

That woke me up about it. It wasn't like they were sneaky about it. They got sent home the first time for 3 days. Company had cameras everywhere..They came back did it again and got sent home for good.

Good for you. I understand the benefits of smartphones but people are abusing them and have become slaves to apps. In your case, I agree that is a tremendous safety concern.
Imagine Neil and Buzz trying to land on the Moon and Neil feels that "buzz" in his pocket and has to check it. HERO ASTRONAUTS DIE ATTEMPTING MOON LANDING.

these were public transportation jobs in my case. Carrying passengers for hire. yapping on the cell phone

The Bible states that "a man has become a slave to whatever has mastered him" and that is true and things can run the gamut of being addicted to potato chips, coffee, the internet or diet coke. IMO it would suck to be addicted to anything as it would impact everything you did.
