Sprint Cup @ Phoenix

Like I said in the pre-race thread. Great to see things are back to normal...

Subway Fresh Fit 500 on@NASCARONFOX posted a 5.3 overnite, +6% vs. last year’s 5.0 and was number 1-rated sports event of weekend.

newman is running a perfect 3/0. Three races three wrecks for Stewart Haas. Hit the wall twice in Phoenix.

How did newman secure a top ride at SHR/Hendrick? He doesn't seem to ever perform well, but maybe I am simply over looking his good performances.

I heard he only signed a one year contract with Stewart Haas this year, so I would guess he had better start finishing higher or

Best buddies with Tony. I would imagine the sponsor sales pitch went something like "Ryan is stuck at Penske, and they aren't a top 5 organization like we are. He'll win races with us."

Oh well.

Did Edwards break restart rules? Johnson thinks so.

Jimmie Johnson was none too pleased with Carl Edwards for the way Edwards restarted the race prior to the final two laps of the Subway Fresh Fit 500 on Sunday.

Edwards responded to the accusations with incredulity. Who, me?

“I felt like Carl didn't follow the restart protocol and was slower than the pace car on his last two restarts, and it gives the leader a huge advantage when that happens,” Johnson said.

“You're supposed to wait until you get between the two lines and take off and this was all going on before it. You're supposed to maintain the speed of the pace car, so I maintained the speed of the pace car and the 99 (of Edwards) is dropping back.”

Full story here.

He got outsmarted. Carl played chicken with the last start line, and Jimmy had to slow, or he would have jumped. I wouldn't be happy either, Carl didn't do anything wrong technically, but I don't believe he didn't do it on purpose, contrary to what he says on interviews when he plays dumb. I would have liked him to say, "yeah I caught him napping"

A bit off the subject, but JR thought he lost a front row start in the pits. If he did a burnout like he did on the restart from the front row, instead of where he was, it wouldn't have been pretty. Hamlin was right behind Johnson, what was he doing? Kesolowski was on Carl's bumper. You boys got caught napping

It was classic Carl to try to blame JJ by saying he sped up, and it confused him. Carl once again lacking awareness, or being slick and sneaky.

Come on, Fender, give the guy his due. He outraced and outsmarted Johnson. I don't see how it could be any simpler than that and we both know that EVERY driver plays games on restarts.

lol Read what I said. I have no problem with the restart, just how Carl tried to act nice and innocent.......and blame someone else. Sound familiar? He hasn't changed.

Yes it does sound familiar because I hear it from almost every driver when questioned about a restart. And I agree that he hasn't changed and I doubt any of the rest of them have either.

Meh, I would have enjoyed a wink and a nod more. The whole elaborate 'JJ did it' yarn was a bit much to take.

I agree with that and for the record, it appeared (to me anyway) that he did slow down after the pace car pull away. As for Johnson, I believe he was crying about restarts after the last Phoenix race if memory serves ;)

NASCAR says to maintain a 'reasonable speed'. JJ is just being anal. The fact is, he was beating Carl badly anyway and would have been ahead into turn 1 without that push.

wonder if Budweiser is staying with Harvick when he moves or are they staying with RCR. I know where Delana is going.

Wow he is bringing the wheelbarrow full of money over too. Thanks for the info.
on a bit lighter note...Tony is glad Delana is moving too..but I think he almost got slapped at first

I had heard this stat earlier today so I looked it up for myself. In 2012 there were 1995 green flag passes throughout the field for the spring Phoenix race. Changes in position, (all positions), at the start/finish line. This year there were 1213 green flag passes. 782 less passes.

How about that Gen 6? I told you it wouldn't fix sheet.

Just added it and it wasn't quite as bad as I thought.

2012 - 7449 green flag passes for position
2013 - 6896

553 less
