I agree that it is the most memorable race for me.... It sticks in my memory more than any other.... but.... I don't know if they are trying to recreate it..... there were so many things that went on in that race that can actually never be recreated...... the racing was still good for several years...... until the gimmicks started.... if they are trying to recreate '92....... they are going down the wrong path..... gimmicks won't do it because they have watered it down to the point of crowning a Champion at the last race being a joke.....
And it's all a joke..... a joke on Brian ..... in his infinite wisdom he thought he could compete with NFL...... He should have been happy to be counting his coins and be in the position he was in. Matt deserved to win the Cup by consistency..... the way it should be. The way it had always been.... But... it galled his butt....
But........ it's a terribly convaluted way to do it..... and 75 percent of the folks see it as that.......

Yep....but of course Nascar in it's infinite lack of wisdom took away awarding consistency by adding gimmick after gimmick. It's all coming back to haunt them now as they are scrambling to stop the bleeding at the ticket gates.

Sorry, that's like blaming the guy who discovered fire for your house burning down, or the invention of chocolate chip cookies for overweight kids. Things are what they are; how they're (mis)used tells us much about the users but not the things themselves. Or, to paraphrase the NRA,
What is or isn't a gimmick is often a matter of opinion, and opinions often differ widely. IMO, one of the most egregious gimmicks in Nascar's history was the ridiculously flat Latford points scale, which artificially propped up the second tier for the purpose of keeping the championship standings close. This was always fundamentally unfair to the best drivers and teams, and gifted the Cup to the wrong guy multiple years, IMO.
I'd take that 'widely accepted' format as today's standard any day over the present method. I prefer it by a large margin over the 'Chase Era' in this sport.
One of the best days in Nascar history...period.
And your opinion on that would be more popular than my opinion, among the membership of R-F. I'm not happy about some aspects of the current championship format, but I do appreciate the greater emphasis it places on winning races. I like that part a lot.
