The 2012 NASCAR Chase Champion Will Be.....

This might be Denny's year. I believe he has matured and smoothed out his driving style.
I agree with this. He's a clean driver who hasn't built up any payback debt and seems focused. As long as he stays clear of Vickers he should be good to go.

I've always felt his driving style was smooth while his mental makeup was a mess. All it took was a slight gas problem at Phoenix to make him fall apart. He still had that race in his head when he got to Homestead with a points lead. He had the fastest car until he took it 3 wide on lap 36 and wrecked himself out of a championship. Meanwhile, JJ stayed cool and tooled around the track. JJ's real strong at backing out of trouble and finishing these races while other guys try to do more than they need to. Carl and Biffle had a nice points lead going into Talladega, then Carl tried to do too much and wrecked them both.

Right now with Darien Grubb, Denny is as happy as a kid with a new puppy. Lets see how he reacts when there is some sheet to clean up.

Hamlin's biggest road block to the cup will most likely be his mental toughness. Johnson didn't win all 5 in a row by always having the best equipment. Being the smartest driver on the track and keeping his cool helped along the way.

Well said. Time after time, you can see JJ back off making a pass and patiently wait for a safer time to pull it off. That's driving with confidence.

you know I always bring Brad into these discussions, so here it is. lol

2 years ago, Brad was asked what he thought it would take to win a championship. his response went something like this.:

If you want to know what it takes, look no further than Jimmie Johnson. I don't think he's the most talented driver in the garage, but he is the most dedicated and most focused. Stay focused. Stay calm. Win a championship.

We all know it ;)

I don't know that I'd go to Keselowski or anyone else who has never won a cup for advice about how to do it. But he's right in that all teams have to do is take a look at how Johnson went about it for 5 years in a row.

lol It wasn't Denny or Biffle asking for advice, it was the media asking for his opinion. I think it's a very sound theory, for a guy who says he lacks the natural talent some driver have, on how to get it done.

I understand. I just don't know about asking someone who has never won the cup.

Almost every driver is asked this question. I don't get your befuddlement over asking this question of a driver who hasn't won it yet. If the media want's one guys theory or thought process on how he will get to where he want's to be, that's the guy they ask. The interview was about gaining insight into how Brad thinks, because winning a championship is more than 50% mental. Denny proved that in the negative. JJ proves that in the positive. When Denny was asked much the same question recently, he said Grubbs experience and his maturity would help get it done.

After last years chase results, i'd hate to rule out Tony Stewart for a repeat championship. If not Tony, it certainly could be Denny.

Flashback to everyone's picks for the 2012 champ.

So, how close where you all? I got it right. How about you?
