The Announcers Thread

Probably part of why NASCAR is moving to USA: NBC has picked up Sunday Night Baseball.

I wish they could scrap this whole damn contract and put everything on CW Sports and Prime Video and be done with FOX, WB Discovery, and Versant.

And keep in mind, NASCAR is about to go through all this again with TNT Sports, depending on what happens with WB Discovery. While NASCAR's schedule has the in-car stuff on HBO Max and those TNT races on HBO Max, it's actually likely all of that will move to Discovery+.

Like I am supposed to be shocked? When you give all of the power to the corporations, the people lose their power.

NASCAR needs to rip this TV contract up, then go sign a 20 year deal with FOX. Whatever FOX doesn’t want, CW and Amazon get.
I’m okay with the Amazon side of it, the NFL arrangement along with millions having prime makes it a solid option. Heck my grandparents have Amazon Prime. But leaving network TV is a bad idea, just ask the MLS

Steaming is great if you’re on Amazon or Netflix.

Cable-only is the worst thing to do.

There are still a lot of sporting events that are only on cable, especially events on Versant networks.
As a side note, the LPGA has a new multi-year contract that will have every round of every tournament shown on Versant networks Golf Channel or CNBC. I haven't read how Golf is changing its PGA coverage so it can fit in more of the women, but for the short-term, our household would appear to benefit.

NASCAR and Versant is such a bizarre marriage.

Nobody watching NASCAR will watch the LPGA, LOVB, Cait-less WNBA, Temptation Island, Christley Knows Best or MS NOW.

My bet is NBC is losing money on NASCAR and found a way out.

Eh, NASCAR is still going to be on USA on cable, as it was this past fall. If you could find it then, it's not going to have moved. Does anyone watching care who the parent company is?

We watch NASCAR and LPGA :) As to the rest, I guess we're the only household immune to network cross-promotion. It's been years (decades?) since I saw a program advertised during either motorsports or golf that I felt any urge to watch. Indeed, more often my reaction is to avoid the programming being pushed. I'm sure the networks push the shows their demographics say will appeal to race fans, so I'm probably a statistical anomaly.

Meanwhile, Netflix has suddenly emerged as the favorite to acquire WB Discovery. WBD is, of course, TNT's parent company. Something else to keep an eye on.

As critical as I am of this NASCAR/Versant deal, Versant is making some huge plays here lately.

Unmitigated disaster.

I would not be shocked if the Cup Series went to CW in 2027.

At some point, NASCAR needs to tell NBC to put the races somewhere else or those races will go to another network.

NBC Universal is not involved with NASCAR anymore, aside from airing the four races they're contractually required to show.

The broadcasts on NBC will be branded as "NASCAR on USA Sports."

Both. Can't because ratings already suck. Shouldn't because there's no guarantee that channel will be around much longer or sold off into something else.

I think NASCAR has a performance clause in their contracts, meaning they can leave Versant Media if the ratings plummet as bad as we all fear. And Versant Media has no plans right now to go streaming, with the exception of an MS NOW (formerly MSNBC) app. They've said the plan is to be cable-only.

We're about to go through all this with TNT Sports too. TNT is NOT part of the WB/Netflix deal, and WBD has said Discovery (what will be TNT's parent company) might be pulled from HBO Max this spring/summer, and Discovery is trying to sell TNT off to private equity.

WB/Discovery is a huge mess in more ways than I'd like to describe (speaking as a diehard classic animation fan, my pain with this company is immeasurable). To the upcoming TNT fiasco should be fun.

The fun game to play will be betting on whether or not TNT and USA are still around come 2032. :p

The president has already said he will not allow the WB/Netflix merger, so there's that. Although, I think WB Discovery gets around that by selling CNN to one of the Trump Administration's state media proxies.

Several sports media insiders have said they do not think TNT will exist by 2028. Losing the NBA was a MASSIVE blow and the NHL has expressed regrets about signing with TNT.

Versant will be short lived. The only way I see Versant successfully being sold off is if it's to a state media proxy, and the sole purpose of that would be to shut MS NOW down. I think the NASCAR "Playoffs" or whatever abomination is about to be announced will end up on The CW in a couple years.

And people were wondering why the NBA left Turner after being with them all those years.

Everyone saw the writing on the wall. The NBA is much better off now being on ESPN, NBC and Amazon. The NHL is worse off being on TNT.

IndyCar is better off on FOX. The NASCAR O'Reilly Series is better off on The CW. The NASCAR Cup Series is worse off on TNT and USA.
