This was the 7th year of The Chase and the same guy has won it for 5 years. Had the points been as they used to be, he has two. That should be enough reason there to dump it. Racing is not a stick and ball sport where you have a playoff. The Chase isn't a playoff. All you're doing is resetting the points for the last 10 races. It is not a good system. I would say the same thing had Stewart won the last 5, so it's not bias on my part.

I'll agree that they shouldn't have rearranged the standings in the points once The Chase has begun like they have. Harvick was in first place during the regular season and he should've started out in first.

However, I'm tired of the whole "Old System talk". As it has been pointed out many times in the past, they even changed the "Old System" several times. Throughout the history of Nascar, the point system has always been changing and meddled with, and they'll keep doing that.

The Chase isn't going to be dumped, which is why instead of saying "Rabble rabble, drop The Chase", propose ideas on how to change The Chase.

Someone on Windtunnel extra said it best. No more provisionals, no more start and parks, the fastest 43 race. The start and parks are messing with how the points end up for the chasers.

Been saying that for years, fastest 43 make the race no ifs, ands or buts.

Honestly the Old Points tells you who is the best team/driver over the course of the year, the Chase doesnt do that. What Nascar has done to the points system is the reason they have lost a good chunk of their fan base.

Under the old system Jimmie Johnson has 2 championships, not 5. If you ask me that's a huge problem and Nascar needs to figure it out. All of you Jeff Gordon fans out there, 2 Championships have been stolen from him because of the new system.

How doesn't it do that? You have to be consistent in the 26 regular season race to even make the top 12. You can't just lag around in 20th all year and expect to be in The Chase. Then in The Chase, you have to be consistently in the front to even have a chance at The Championship. Beside his wreck in the first Chase race, Johnson has consistently been in the top 10.

Face it, he has earned it.

I'm not saying he hasn't earned it, because with the Chase he has. What I am saying is that the old system does a better job of showing you who the actual better drive/team is over the course of the season. Jimmie may have won the chase this year, but harvick clearly was more consistent that JJ was over the course of the season.

The new system clearly is not working. Kurt Busch wasnt the best driver of the course of the year the first year, Jeff Gordon was and JJ wasnt the best for 3 of the championships he won. A large group of fans have left the sport and i believe this is one of the major reasons why.

I say dump the Chase, and stay clear of the old system of scoring points for consistancy. I want winners(like Hamlin this year) and winners only to claim championship. The more you win, the more points you give. I think you would have a lot better racing if only the top 10 finishers get points, and the winner getting extra points. Leading the most laps and leading a lap would continue to score points, but also give points for winning the Pole qualifying. No provisionals, fastest 43.

1st Place)15 points
2) 9 Points
3) 8 points
4) 7 points
so on and so forth.

I like this idea, i'm all for awarding the winners of the races, what I'm not a fan of his resetting the points 2/3rds of the way through the season.

once again

My point system 43 points for the win and 1 point for last place 5 extra for the win who ever has the most at the end of the year wins

but that is to simple

Interesting i thought.......

I guess this argument will never go away. Seems like after every race, someone tells how much they hate the Chase and it should be dumped. Will y'all still be griping about it in ten years? For that matter, will you still watch NASCAR? Think about this...there are some kids today that are fans that were born after the Chase began. That's all they know, though I realize they might be a bit young to really appreciate racing.

I'd have to agree. There was nothing special about the "old points" system. To be quite blunt and honest. NASCAR basically traded in one arbitrary measuring system or another. That's all it is. Just an arbitrary system that they came up with to gauge who's the better driver. Tomorrow they could come out with whomever has the bluest car is the better driver, and it would be just as arbitrary as The Chase or the "Old System".

actually buck, i cant tell you the last time i sat down to watch a race. I've seen little bits and pieces of races over the summer, but the last full race was probably the Daytona 500.

i havent even flipped it over to the race since football started, and thats even when i watch a horrible football team.

There was a time when I didnt miss a single race.

The biggest issue I have is people talking about JJ as he's the greatest to ever drive a car, how can you compare what he's done vs. what the drivers in the past have done?

You can't. Hel you can't even compare Richard Petty to Earnhardt Sr. Earnhardt Sr., Petty and Johnson has won their championships in their own era of racing, and under each era, they've won under separate rules.

However, you still can't deny that Johnson is probably one of the most talented driver this sport has seen in a long time. Even if he never wins another Championship, you can't deny his amazing talent, or the talent of his crew chief or his team. It's very rare for a driver to make you stand up and take notice like this, but Johnson has done it.

I really don't understand all the hatred for the Chase other than the fact Johnson has one it the last 5 times. I don't see it as someone getting robbed out of the title, all 12 of the drivers that make the Chase have the same opportunity to win as Johnson does and the guy with the most wins starts with an advantage. If anything it gives 12 drivers a better opportunity as apposed to a runway winner with 3-4 races left which, to me, that's more exciting and actually makes me want to watch the last few races.

I know there have been close title runs before the chase but looking through the standing from those years it didn't seem to happen very often with the exception in the 90's for whatever reason, 92, 95, 96 and 97, they were somewhat close. 98 - 2001 were absolute blowouts then 2002 it was a 38 point difference and 2003 was a 90 point difference. I'm just saying I see what NASCAR has tried to do in theory with at least 12 drivers have a chance with 10 to go to get more people interested but the problem is that the 48 team has figured out what it takes and now the other teams need to step it up. I think RCR and JGR have figured it out and Roush is almost there so by this time next season will be a contender. This year was the most exciting one I have seen and next year there will be a new champ and I have a feeling will be even more exciting down to the last race with nobody knowing who will win until the last lap.

You guys have a great off season, Happy Thnksgiving, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and I'll do my best not to be such an a**hole when I come back next season.

Which team?the one him and his crew chief dumped with 2 races to go or the new one him and his crew chief stole from the 24.

Let's see, he's 10th on the all time winner's list with 53 wins and he's only been racing for nine years. He's ahead of many top driver of the past and present. I wonder when he will surpass the almighty Earnhardt and the King in titles?

All this JJ love makes me want to f'n puke.

Well, NASCAR wants to compare stock car racing to stick and BS sports so I will do the same.

Let's say this year an NFL football team in each division wins the most games. So the NFL spots them one point for win and they carry 14 bonus points into each of the playoff games.

Does anyone think the fans would accept this?

FINALLY! Someone makes sense! Yes, everyone has the same opprotunity to win the Chase as Johnson. Someone needs to step up and TAKE IT! Hamlin tried to say that he and his team were going to be the ones to do it...and they fell on their face. I think it will be intersting to see who finally does tep up and take it.

As long as it's chevy winning them and not toyota, i'm cool with it.

The Chase isn't going anywhere. If anything it will be changed once again to try and guarantee a winner take all situation at Homestead. Bill France has been hinting at changes to the Chase since the beginning of the final 10 races this year. In last weeks news conference at Homestead when asked about the declining ratings of the Chase, specifically the move from network to cable he basically said that while he knows that they are taking a hit on ratings, ESPN is viewed by a much younger demographic. That is apparently their target audience. Those of us that have been around for a long time don't matter to the sport as much as we once did.

And Nascar will continue to lose viewers and sponsors, making it impossible to avoid contraction, which IMO will happen within 3 years. I do feel this will make the sport better and stronger, however, but it has to be done right or the sport will lose too many good people.

So when you look at Championships, how do you compare Johnson's 5 to Gordon's 4 or Petty & Earnhardt's 7?

you cant, thats my point.

So why are you trying to compare them?

Because i want to, is that ok? or should i just take what others are saying and just agree with them?

Some people are saying (DW) that JJ is the greatest of all time, I cant agree with that. IMO JJ wasnt even the greatest driver of this season, the Chase does not reflect who the greatest driver of an entire season is.

The OP asked if the chase should be dumped or not, IMO the numbers prove that the chase should be dumped. How can you crown someone the champion of a series when in fact the numbers prove they werent the best driver of the overall season?

Ok, so name one other driver who won five championship in a row.

Hahahah....good one!

Hahahah....good one!

its fun debating this, but i will not be able to defend my believe that JJ is not the greatest of all time until next week.

Off to the in laws (help), have a good thanksgiving.
