They still have practice speeds to fall back on if need be. I think that's how it works anyway.

I think this is the one race a year where they actually try. McDowell finished 9th in the 500 last year in that car.

Doubt it..about the only ones that don't are the back markers without qualifying speeds or Past Champions, or owner points.
