The real championship thread

As much as I wish it were back to that, those days are long gone. After 10+ years it may just be time to move on..... or not.
Yeah, I doubt we'll ever go back to straight points, but I do hope a better format comes along soon. Given the low ratings we've seen thus far in the Chase, it may not be long until the next revamp.

For anyone who cares, what the points would look like under last year's format:

1. Joey Logano - 2,184
2. Kevin Harvick - 2,156 (-28)
3. Kyle Busch - 2,150 (-34)
4. Brad Keselowski - 2,149 (-35)

Not surprising. Just like '04 and '07. But if the 24 can avoid a wreck early at Dega I think he has a great shot. Regardless of the format of the standings.

I enjoy seeing the non chase standings but the championship would be pretty much over with Gordon a full race ahead of the field. It does show how the Ganassi teams could improve their season by running well after the chase started. .

seems we got several "real championship " point systems goin in this thread ! ha!

ya'll gonna have ta decide which one ya usin .....afore ya crown ya "real champion " after homestead !

or do ya pick a driver 1st .......then tha point system ta fit him ? ha!

43-to-1 is terrible, and it's evident the current Chase format doesn't reward winning as much as they said it would. Can we please come up with a points system that actual makes winning mean something?

Brian is sending us mixed messages. He dumbed down the points system a few years ago because he thought we couldn't add, then this year proceeded to unveil an extremely convoluted chase format that left everybody confused about how it exactly works.

Not to worry hawg, in a couple years I'll do a thread with what the points would have been under this format, after Brian changes it again. ;)

if a toyo wins it this yr .......thinkin it'll be "don't touch tha chase " from your camp !! :D

Interesting top 12 though . As bad as Roush is , they still have 2 cars in there . As bad as Childress is , they still have one there . I really underestimated Harvick and his new crew chief , they have had a sensational year. The Hendrick cars have some competition this year , and that's great . Penske and Gibbs , right up there as usual. . Wish I could go back and find all those negative Ryan Newman comments from last year . He has proven that he is a top ten driver .

I still maintain that the 43-1 Chase system we had from 2011-2013 was darn near perfect. It simplified things, and at the same time, it struck a nice balance between winning and consistency. NASCAR fixed something that IMO wasn't broken when they came up with this new format. Everyone wanted closer points battles, right? Hell, the previous format gave us a tie in points in 2011 - and they only had to reset the points once! Everyone wanted winning to mean more, right? Stewart's five Chase wins won him that 2011 title.

It rewards winning exactly as they said it would.
Which is why our boy would have won the championship under this format with no wins last year, right? ;)

I know I'm in the minority here, but I actually wouldn't mind seeing a winless champion at all, to be honest. I'm all about consistency, though, so I'm definitely an endangered species.

It rewards winning exactly as they said it would.
So far, it rewards points racing. 10th, 11th, and 12th have combined for eleven wins (one Chase win) while 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, and 8th have combined for five wins (zero Chase). Winning won't be much of a factor until the final round when only one person gets in on points.

As extreme as it would be, I wouldn't mind if they just counted wins over the entire season and awarded the championship based on that, with points as a tiebreaker.

I know I'm treading ground in one of the many 'I hate the Chase' threads so I don't expect anything that I say on here to mean anything to you guys but to have said that it doesn't reward wins is anything but reality. Wins are what advanced teams into the post season as well as consistency on the part of others. Wins propelled drivers to the next round of eliminations as well as consistency on the part of others. They'll continue to do that through the next eliminations as well. It's doing exactly what it was designed to do.

The teams that are ready to be shown the door on Sunday afternoon would have been eliminated in any of the Chase formats that they've had to date. They haven't got the job done when it mattered. This includes my driver.

Except in the Chase the vast majority of advancements are going to come from points and points alone. The intent wasn't so much to reward winning as it was to guarantee a "Game 7" every year and NASCAR said as much in their Meet the Press back in January.

Also, Keselowski, for instance, would still be alive for the championship even if he doesn't win Talladega according to ToyYoda's post a bit up the page.

I think it was far from. It gave 3rd-14th a larger percentage of the winner's points than before, made the percentage of points to be picked up from passes between 2nd and 6th worth less (particularly stupid since passes that high up should have the largest increments), and made DNF outliers much more punishing and significant than they should ever be. Basically, it made Top 10ing and Top 15ing people to death that much more strategic than being aggressive towards the very front of the field. That's how someone like Austin Dillon can be higher in the championship than guys with much better statistics like Clint Bowyer and Paul Menard.

Yep, Logano has been the best driver over the last 5 races since the Chase began.

Gordon has been the best overall driver this entire season.
Which means?.............. Nothin! :cool::p

Also.. ur wrong.. Joey has been the best driver since Indy... that like 13 races.. not just 5 since the chase.... has only finished outside the top 6 once since then. Including 3 wins... the one outside the top 6 was 14th at Atlanta when he got wrecked on the final restart.
