Thoughts On BRISTOL

This is not just about N'wide or CUP - It's about BRISTOL, Baby!

There are many fans (like me) who love the newest configuration of the track, which allows for side-by-side racing, fewer wrecks and a reduced need to rattle someone else's cage. But there are probably just as many who think that the rassin just ain't as good as it ustawas, since winning a race at Bristol is no longer predicated on how many cars a particular driver knocks aside on his/her way to Victory Lane. That debate will rage on, I am sure.

Here's MY take:

First, I am quite disappointed that the Trucks aren't racing this weekend!!! NA$$CAR's brilliance must be far brighter than me - cause if I were in charge, I would make absolutely certain that the NCWTS was part of ANY NA$$CAR Weekend at Bristol! Oh, well...

Secondly, the N'wide race is sponsored by Widow Wax. WTF is Widow Wax? Is that a substance that is applied to women who have lost their husbands or to gnarly black spiders one would find hiding out in the woodpile? 300 Laps, 600 chances to be a bonehead!

Thirdly, The CUP Race at Bristol is always one of the season's highlights - although I prefer the Saturday Night Race, I will go out of my way to catch each and every one of the 500 laps! While there are drivers who have had a good history at this track, it is quite hard to pick a favorite going in. That's part of what makes this race so intriguing!

The side story is, of course, Miss Thang making her second CUP start of 2012. I think that Danica is great for NA$$CAR in terms of EXPOSURE - and no, Andy, I am NOT referring to her cheesecake photos or her GoDaddy ads. I am referring to the fact that thousands upon thousands of eyeballs will be witness to Sunday's Drah-Mah just to see how the Girl does. And by ANY measure, that is a good thing!

I am a Danica Fan. But I have always felt that she would be NO MATCH for 500 laps at Bristol (or 600 miles at Charlotte either) so it will be quite interesting to follw her progress. Add to that the fact that she will be running (one would assume, anyway) 300 laps on Saturday and that's quite a work load for a 98 pound person - male OR female.

I would place the over/under on how many of the 800 laps she will complete this weekend at 550.

So, there ya go. Feel free to talk amongst yourselves...

New Bristol is TERRIBLE. It has been reconfigured so those who couldn't handle the fast high banks a chance. Everywhere is now a passing zone, and that leads to boring cookie cutter type races. Nothing like the times when a wayward lapdown backmarker would hold Senior up for more than 5 laps, he got the chrome horn and a grizzled smile from The Man in Black!

I can't forget one of the times Senior had a super fast car at Bristol, lost power steering with around 100 to go and finished 3rd.

Nice post Robby. The first think I thought when I saw Window Wax was Widow Wax, so we think alike. I have to agree with GARF. The racing was pure short track before the change. Miss Thang will be really, really pissed after this weekend. I'm starting to question Tony's schedule for her development. She wont have any confidence left in a few weeks.

Yeah, he threw her into a screaming hot fry pan.

I agree , Bristol is no place for a rookie ..male or female. Racers who cut their teeth on shorttracks , paved and dirt , have a big advantage over any rookie without that same background. That isn't rocket science .

The opinions vary widely on the reconfigured Bristol. I've been a long time fan of the sport and have been attending both Bristol races for many, many years. I liked the races at the track before but I like the racing that takes place there now far more than years gone by. Racing being the key word. They weren't able to race this track in the past. Move out of line, go to the back. That was pretty much the routine. Now I can watch these guys race side by side, lap after lap. Cautions are down, green flag laps are up. I like watching the race more than watching the pace car take laps. Unfortunately it seems most prefer the wrecks and torn up race cars over the door to door action that the track now produces.

Trucks @ Bristol..... Yes, that's a fun race to go to. It's too bad that they can't get that on the schedule there twice a year.

Danica..... I thought she was running the August Cup race and not March race? Whatever the case she will be running Saturday afternoon. Her first experience with the track last year wasn't much different that every drivers first time there. She started 29th was running 17th and then finished 33rd, wrecked. I'm guessing she'll improve over that.

We leave for the race this evening and will be there camping tomorrow in advance of the weekend. If you ever get the chance to get there, go. You won't be disappointed. Racing is only part of the week or weekend @ Bristol. Bruton goes all out with things to do for the average race fan @ that track.

Is there anyone else here that's going this weekend?

Hope that you have a great weekend at "Bristol Baby". What a great venue . Was there for one race a few years back, got rained out and had to wait till Monday.Loved every minute. Including the old lady whose lawn we parked on. She couldn't do enough for us.We'll be watchin for you on the telly.:D

Who started that Bristol Baby thing? I'm thinkin maybe Hammond , but I'm not sure.

Take pics! :D
Will do. Unlike you though, I have no all access pass until the fall race. My pics will probably more focus on the view of the average Joe Fan. I thought about taking you all to the race with me via another thread and updated via Tapatalk. I'm not sure if that is going to happen this time or perhaps in the fall. If it does happen you're all along for the ride and camping experience.

RIP Alan Kulwicki

He did it right, and with less resources. He made chicken salad out of other chicken stuff.

Alan was an old school Saturday night racer that did it the hard way. He came into cup racing with nothing but faith in himself, and accomplished the impossible, the one in a million dream.

I am 50 and followed NASCAR since I was 10 years old, and I am almost certain he was the last his kind. He was the last little man that was ever able to beat the big money.

It has been almost 19 years, but anybody from that era will never forget Alan. I was and still am a Dale SR. Bowtie fan, but the mountain that Kulwicki climbed was the best racing story or event ever IMO.

God bless his memory, and the earned respect.

The "new" Bristol in my opinion, SUCKS! The track, the racing, everything about it. The easiest way for them to tell they messed up the best track is by the empty seats. Which took just one race on the new surface to effect the second race attendance. It just looks like 95% of every other race on the schedule.

I loved it best when it was asphalt, the sparks contrasted better.

But Bristol has never been my favorite short track. You can nudge, grind, slam, bam better at Martinsville IMO.
I just wish they had some night racing (have been to both tracks several times).

I don't hate the new configuration, but there will still be 10 or 15 cautions or
S.O.S

I'm with you. Martinsville has always been my favorite track hands down. I love it and look forward to it twice a year.

Now it's more like most tracks. If there are a few cars up front that are close in speed, it's a better race than the old configuration. The old configuration always had some drama because slower cars were getting knocked out of the way.

Can't wait to hear more of this during the weekend from her wahhhhh wahhhhh wahhhhh, it was all his fault! I did nothing wrong! wahhhh wahhhh wahhhh

Your Danica obsession seems unhealthy. Do you have insurance? If so, there are professionals that can help but you need to give them the chance.

Its sports, part of the fun of it is to root against people you don't like!

True Dat!

I was in a bit of a conundrum last night. I had to choose between rooting for Boston's Celtics or Donald T. Sterling's Clippers. I rooted for the Clippers - by default... (but Boston won)

They needs girls on their team.

Sure, to a point. But you seem obsessed with taking pleasure out of anything negative relating to a young woman you don't even know. Very twisted IMO. Other than that, I like your posts here.

It's really all in good fun for me, I do enjoy seeing her perform badly but there are plenty of people on this board who enjoy seeing others do bad as well. Just listen to all the cheers at the tracks when Jimmie Johnson or Kyle Busch crash out or have other issues.

I'm gonna do my best to not sound like a broken record this year about Danica, ill let Andy do that for me instead :p

It's kind of a grown-up thing for me .I don't really take pleasure in the misfortunes of others ,nor do I enjoy seeing Nascar drivers run down by 'supposed' fans . But I'm old. :D

Danica is not running the Cup race, for your information...
