Time to look at playoff format?

There might be 17 cars in the playoffs this year, including the #45 Toyota driven by Ty Gibbs..

Writing in The Athletic, Jeff Gluck quoted Denny Hamlin as saying 23XI has been discussing with Nascar what would happen if Kurt Busch is not cleared to race at Darlington. Reading between the lines, this implies that the team remains uncertain about the timing of Kurt's return. If the team had already been assured that Kurt would be ready to go next week, this whole discussion would seem to be moot.

Hamlin firmly stated that the #45 would compete for the Owners Championship. Afterall, there is money on the line, including the 2022 owners points fund and future performance-based charter payouts.

If Kurt remains sidelined for Darlington, Nascar might fill his spot in the Drivers Championship. Truex and the #19 team would be in, or the Daytona winner if it's a new 2022 winner.

Bottom Line: we could wind up with #45 racing for the Owners Championship, and the #19 going for the Drivers Championship, plus 15 other cars competing for *both* championships.

Gluck mentioned one possible way to streamline this confusing scenario... move Truex into the #45 car for the final 10 races, and Ty Gibbs into the #19 which would be a non-championship runner. LOL.

the whole waiver and credibility decision was lost on me when the put Gordon in the 2013 playoffs after he missed it. But yea, not to derail this thread..... thought Kurt had a waiver or at least I thought I read it on twitter from NASCAR's official handle.

It's going to be interesting to see how Blaney races this weekend. Seems like Truex needs to be aggressive and get those stage points. If he does and Blaney doesn't, the final stage will be a real dog fight between them. Because it is entirely possible we get a new winner this week.

Sorry late to the game on this one. I commend whoever made the decision to withdraw the waive after it became apparent he would not be able to compete in all playoff races.

On another note I hate to say it but the way things look I kinda hope we don't see Kurt back in a car again. He has so much to offer the sport besides being behind the wheel

Im going to put my flamesuit on for this post... I like the playoff system.

My background is traditional sports where legends and moments are made in the playoffs. Playoffs bring a higher level of competition, greater stakes and a level of urgency not seen in the regular season. The lows are lower and the highs are higher. The best driver/player, team or organization doesn't always win, and that's what makes sports great.

Now I would make a few changes.

• No final championship race. Make it a 2 or 3 race set to determine the winner.
• (I had another change that I was thinking of last night but cant remember right now lol)
• Finally for the love of god NBC please stop screaming about "PLAYOFFS!!!". We understand, no need to screech about it any chance you get.

Just my opinion.

It should definitely not come down to just one race to decide the champion. Two or three races would be best for sure.

Was listening to Sirius yesterday and it seems the way charters work they pay out based on owners points, not driver. Makes a lot more sense why they chose to give up the playoff waiver for Kurt.

The outrage is understandable considering Truex missed the playoffs. That said I don’t think we’ll ever see this again with 16+ winners. Probably settle back into the 10-12 different winners range and we won’t have this issue anytime soon.

The Chase was better than this. But 2011 happened and NASCAR wanted "Game 7 Moments" every single year.

I hate this points system more than I've ever hated anything NASCAR's ever done.

The 2003 points system was just fine.

If you look at how viewership numbers have evolved since the chase and later the playoffs were introduced you can hardly come to the conclusion that this is "what the fans want" to see.
My thinking always was that any system where a driver could theoretically win 35 races, finish 2nd once and still lose the title is garbage.

I would like to see this system.
Stages and stage points are kept but stage cautions are abolished at Road Courses. The last stage has to make up for at least 50% of the race.

At the finish, 1st place gets 60 points.
2nd - 54 pts.
3rd - 48 pts.
4th - 43 pts.
5th - 40 pts.
6th - 38 pts.
7th - 36 pts.
8th - 34 pts.
9th - 32 pts.
10th - 31 pts.
...
40th - 1 pt
Playoffs and Playoff Points are abolished.

I think it doesn't make sense to say full season points will never come back. The Cup Series returned to dirt racing after 50 years and earlier this year Switzerland actually legalized Motorsports again after 67 years. Never say never.
