Toyota-Save Mart 350-Sonoma Pre-race Thread

All I know is I'm ready for some road course racing. You don't luck in to a road course win, you have to earn it.

Unless Marcos Ambrose is leading and decides to shut off the motor while under caution and then stalls it on a hill........ then you luck into a win

You had to remind us of this? Words cannot describe my thoughts when that happened....well yes they can but their not printable words.

I'm going to be there in September. When someone else is paying the tab, you work around their schedule.

James Finch must figure since he's getting out before Watkins Glen then there's no sense in hauling a road course car back to the shop. I'm putting the over / under on 'Cars Jacques damages' at 5. 'Damage' is defined as the other car having to pit, not just trading paint. Place your bets...

I'm thinking just under 5 cars.

That had to be one of the harder lessons to have been learned. Your leading a Sprint Cup race with the chance of it being your first win, your crew chief orders in your ear and a pack of the best stock car drivers in the world right behind waiting for you to f-up the smallest bit and they will be all over you.........

Road racing is friggin great.... watching these cars pitch left and right, accelleration, brakeing...... its just awesome.

I would like to see some tracks designed for stock cars and their limted braking and turning ability. A wide 1 mile road course with 3 or 4 risky passing zones would be awesome.

We were their for it. My wife and I with a couple of friends. We were in turn 4, right before the drop in elevation. All of a sudden the pack cruises by and no Ambrose and on the TV I see he is stalled. I switched to his frequency and there was nothing but utter confusion from him and his car chief.

Then NASCAR made the call and I just shook my head. It was amazing to see that actually happen. Then JJ walked away with it

Sup Road America.

Actually, Watkins Glen is actually a pretty good road course for stock cars too, in my humble opinion. I think the Cup cars would put on a great show at Road Atlanta, too.

LOL nope... Im kinda more interested to see who Jacques is gona piss off. I have a feeling itll be Tony..
Easier to guess who he WON'T piss off, and that list consists of the S&P crowd. He'll PO everyone else, if only because he'll raise so many cautions that no one will be able to get in a rhythm.

WG, RA and Sonoma don't really have what it takes for real good racing in cup cars. The NW cars are slower and a little lighter and therefore brake better, which is a big reason why there is more quality passing in NW road races.

In your opinion. I've been going to races at Road America since I was old enough to stand. I think it'd be a great place for a Cup race. I think Cup cars would be able to pass on the front stretch, "turn 4", the carasoul and the back stretch. And there's been more than a few good Cup races at Watkins Glen, so, not sure what you're talking about.

Of course. Now we have your opinion too.

But my opinion is right and everybody else is wrong. :D

Seriously though, I've seen vintage Corvettes and Ferraris race at RA and they put on a good show. Obviously, much lighter than modern Cup cars, but they also have terrible awful drum brakes compared to modern brakes as well. Elkhart Lake has a lot of long winding straights that would be good for Cup cars, again, in my humble opinion.

Of course, being from Wisconsin, I am biased and "Because Road America" is my answer to all road course-related questions.

I don't see much difference in a cup car and a N'wide car on a road course. If they are racing N'wides at RA, cups can race there too. It is not like they are any wider and they weigh only a hundred pounds more. Neither one stop any better, they both run the same rear suspension and will wheel hop like crazy if you don't brake properly. Cup car will spin the tires easier, but they can have as many tires that they want. Bring on RA.

Your opinions are entertaining. My facts are right. :p

Yes, those vintage cars are different than Cup cars, just as NW cars are firrent than cup cars.

 I said that already.

LOL, Jeff Garden. Must be a new road course ringer Hendrick has brought in. How do you misspell the name of one of the most prolific NASCAR drivers of the past 20 years?

Watching practice right now, track looks difficult for these cars, no problem for sports cars or touring or group C but NASCAR is a different animal. Villeneuve going wide often on this track but he improved quickly.

LOL Jeff Garden.

i'm curious...when did all this love for road courses begin?

admittedly, i'm an old timer. but once upon a time, if my memory hasn't went tilt (anyone remember pinball?), road courses were deplored and to be ignored. seems that has changed.

is it because of the lack of short tracks in favor of the cookie cutters?

just wondering...

You'd think drivers like Fellows would want to put in as many laps as possible in practice...especially as they're a long way off the pace so far.

I'm sitting in a hotel on the beach in Ventura watching Cup practice. Lots of guys getting off the track into the dirt. I just watched Jimmie spin out. Looks real slick out there.
I'm walking distance from the dirt track that I'll be at tomorrow night. Sprint cars, IMCA modifieds, and carts :)

Keep in mind this place is filled with enthusiasts looking to discuss racing, not a perfect vertical slice of all NASCAR fans. I bet a lot of fans will be tuning out this weekend, which is a shame.
