Toyota-Save Mart 350-Sonoma Pre-race Thread

i'm curious...when did all this love for road courses begin?

admittedly, i'm an old timer. but once upon a time, if my memory hasn't went tilt (anyone remember pinball?), road courses were deplored and to be ignored. seems that has changed.

is it because of the lack of short tracks in favor of the cookie cutters?

just wondering...

I think it's because it's just something different.

Road course races with these big cars have always intrigued me..
but yeah, I think you may be on to something.

I agree , opinion did change really quickly . I think folks realized the 'beatin and bangin' they were looking for was still there , on road courses . That said , I hope they finally come to appreciate the diversity in Nascar racing.

I know when I first got into Nascar racing I didn't care much for the road courses but now actually look forward to them. Let's race!!!

Road racing in Nascar has always been what it is today. Don't know where you came up with this sudden love thing. Back in the day, about the only ones complaining were drivers who couldn't drive but around in circles and they just got their butts kicked by drivers that could. Road course ringers have been used from the first days of road courses when owners thought they would get a better finish using a ringer than a full time Nascar driver. The ringers have never been much of a factor, nothing like cup guys running N'Wide are today. The tracks are better/safer and TV coverage is there and better than it was in the past. The cars are faster and handle better than they did back in the day, and the drivers with the exception of Jr., are well rounded and can drive road courses with the best drivers in the world. Below is the first 500 mile Nascar race ever held, 1963 50 years ago. Riverside California over 60 thousand fans at the race. In other words, road racing in Nascar is not new, hasn't been ignored, or suddenly changed, they were popular then and popular now. Nascar is not going back to tracks where 20 thousand fans over on the east coast watch a short track race, THAT has changed, not road courses.

Fords, Pontiacs, Mercurys, Dodges and Chevys. History lesson and interesting history of Nascar's first 500 mile road race.

500 miles and over 6 hours of racing and it ended under caution !!!

Just hope it wasn't for debris . . . ;)

Seriously, that's a great video.

The lack of on-track safety barriers for the drivers and fans is amazing. At one spot, a "Danger - Restricted Area" sign was all there was to keep the fans away from the track.

The part about that video that got me was when they gassed up the car. They literally looked like they used the factory fill as it came from the factory.

Only a minute in and already a crash in qualifying.
They didn't need a ringer in the #36; Yeley could have wadded it up by himself and saved them the money of a second car.

"There's no way to stop when you hit the sand there (Turn 10)."
Then maybe you shouldn't be in the sand...

didn't even make the race yet..said he was trying to pass Stremme on the warm up lap? he has a back up car..remember that so he still has multiple chances. Not bad so far for a back packer.o_O

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz they need to ditch Sonoma and bring the Cup cars to Road America...this is the only weekend that I think I enjoy watching Nationwide more than Cup.

I consider the original Daytona race on the beach to be a road course

The Daytona Beach course must have been one of the wackiest courses in the history of NASCAR.

From what I've read, it was like taking Martinsville and extending the straight-a-ways to about two miles each. One straight was on a local highway and the other was on the beach.

Because the turns were so sharp, a lot of braking was involved and the brakes were prone to heat up. When their brakes got too hot, drivers would drive through the shallow ocean water along the beach to cool them off.

gotta love it . . .

I wish there was more road courses that Nascar went to. About 6, more short track, less mile and halfs.. I think that would add to the so called diversity and maybe more F1 drivers would give Nascar a shot.

Ah Daytona back in the 50's, that was a real man's race. :)

At least you get good tracks in NASCAR, tracks in CASCAR (or Canadian NASCAR series) is a stupid joke.

Don't know if anyone else caught this, but apparently Victory Lane is live from Michigan tonight. o_O

Why the hell is Danica Patrick one of the 4 in car cameras for Racebuddy this week?

Because they are gambling on good action, plenty of 4 wheeling out in the boonies, rear ending 30th place cars in front of her, always a good shot to watch the hood crumple. Hope they get a camera on the crew chief growing more grey hairs right before our eyes.

In other words, for the same reason there's a camera on her roof every weekend. Same reason there's often one on John Wes Townley.
