Unofficial "Classic" Driver Points

No denying that an elimination format is exciting. It's that way by design. Is it the ideal way to crown a NASCAR champion? That's questionable/debatable.

Personally I'm a fan of crowning the overall season's best driver as opposed to the current format.
I would like to see the 26 race champion get a buy into the final at Homestead. That I think would keep driver racing for total points up to race 26.

There's no reason we can't enjoy a playoff to award a trophy and also recognize a season long champion.

They could implement a most valuable driver award or something.. call it "The (insert sponsor name here) MVD Award" and give a trophy and bonus to the driver who accumulates the most points all season.. That would be cool to see imo.

Another idea would to call the award the cup championship. I kid of course ;)

Chase is here to stay.

I love the idea of the regular season champ getting a buy into homestead

So here's the "semi-classic" points, where we would be under the 2011-13 chase format:

1. Kyle Busch 2,322
2. Joey Logano 2,315 (-7)
3. Matt Kenseth 2,290 (-32)
4. Denny Hamlin 2,288 (-34)
5. Jimmie Johnson 2,283 (-39)
6. Kurt Busch 2,268 (-54)
7. Martin Truex, Jr. 2,266 (-56)
8. Brad Keselowski 2,261 (-61)
9. Chase Elliott 2,255 (-67)
10. Kevin Harvick 2,250 (-72)
11. Carl Edwards 2,248 (-74)
12. Kyle Larson 2,244 (-78)

Buescher, Dillon, McMurray, and Stewart would not have qualified for the chase. Kenseth and Larson would have gotten in as wild cards.
