Vacation stories/pictures thread

You are visiting some parts of the U.S. of A. we have never seen. Looks to be a great trip. Would like to hear some of the places you will be stopping.
This trip is a work in progress that's constantly being revised. I've already made what reservations I can but the reservation windows change from campground to campground. A three day stop at "C" for the Kansas race and two or three day's at each stop from "E" through "N". The others are one night recuperation stops at places that we've already been with the exception of "Q". At "Q" we're planning to spend a full day to visit a friend. Here's a partial list that's ever changing. Some things like spending a couple of hours soaking in a hot spring in Sol Duc won't be added to the list because we'll already be staying there at the campground.
My niece and her husband retired and just bought a new RV and are planning on making the trek with us next year. We're going to make a week long "break in" vacation run with them during the Christmas break. We'll be going to six Florida SP campgrounds that we haven't visited yet.

Thanks, we've been doing this every summer for many years now. The good thing is as big and diverse as our country is we'll never run out of great things to do and see.

Do you have an absolute favorite place you have been to through the years?

We have so many great memories that every trip seems like the best one. It's like this last trip, every place could have been our favorite. They all have their own idiosyncrasies that set them apart from the others. I even tried to think of a place that I would like to revisit more than the others but drew a blank. Sunrise coming up over the Grand Canyon, eating a lobster fresh off of the boat at sunset in a small New England fishing village, standing in the mist watching the rainbows shimmer in Niagra Falls or eating Buffalo Wings at the Anchor Bar where they were first made. There are too many memories like this to count. It was a good question though because it made us think about it. :D

What did you and the wife think of the Giant Sequoias in the Sequoia National Forest and the Red Woods?

To me the trees were and are awe inspiring. When I worked out there for 6 years we went to the SNF and Kings Canyon and Jeep'd the Sierras in that area too many times to count.
The PCH drive north of San Fran and South of SF, was another wonderful trip we did several times.

It was a great experience. We drove and walked through every nook, cranny and trail that we could find. They're so damned old and huge that awe inspiring just isn't strong enough to describe them.

Went for a bush walk today on a nice winters day.

It's a Kereru or a Native Wood Pigeon.
They like to eat the berries from the Puriri tree and it makes them drunk.

Yeah , they are tree ferns. .. We have a few varieties . The silver fern is out national emblem

Any good recommendations or tips for a vacation to Las Vegas? I am plan on taking the wife next month probably in mid September, it will be our first visit to the area.

My current rough plan is about 6 nights in Vegas, with some day trips to the hoover dam and to the grand canyon. We might try to spend a night near the grand canyon as well if needed to see it all. We are not big gamblers and we will probably limit ourselves to a $50 maximum loss per night (the wife is an accounting manager and has the mindset). As for the strip we will probably do a lot of walking from casino to casino just to take in the sights, etc. I hear they have a lot of good restaurants and shows and we will try to see a few of those.

We are flying and will try to bundle a flight and hotel package. But we are not 100% sure, if the flight options are not good we will split up the purchases to set up whatever works best. I will probably do a rental car for a few days and even the week if needed, but l have been told that it is not needed or very desirable for a typical day in the city itself. So far Ceasers Palace and the Paris casino resort look like our best available bundled budget choices. My biggest priority is a good clean place to sleep, a casino lobby or whatever the term would be nice, but not a must. Being within walking distance or shuttles to many casinos, restaurants, shows, entertainment etc seems like the best option or priority to me(but l am open to any and all suggestions).
Thanks again and l will go through the thread, the answers may already be posted.

When we were there last June we drove to Hoover Dam, saw everything that there was to see and do and drove back in less than a day. I did some research on the Dam before we left and decided that the guided tours weren't necessary for us. Get there early to beat the crowds. It was a fun outing and we enjoyed ourselves. And It's Damn huge in person. (couldn't help myself) :D

We stayed at a campground at 8,000 feet elevation on Mount Charleston overlooking Las Vegas so I don't have any first hand knowledge of staying in town. @mike honcho goes there frequently so maybe he can help. All of the glitz, glamour and hype in town was fun for a short visit. I hope that this helps.

You going to any of the races at LVMS at all? Also Zion National Park is not too far away in Southern Utah if you have a vehicle, which is really nice.

Our trip was 31 day's long 7,928.8 miles traveled and $2,912.08 spent on gas. We traveled through 11 states twice for a total of 22 States. The most expensive gas was a tie at $5.00 a gallon outside of Las Vegas and $4.99 a gallon in Centerville CA. Too many grins to count, surely several million. :D

Let me guess, the $5 gas station was in the middle of nowhere south of Primm, Nevada / north of Barstow, CA near Vegas?

No races at LVMS on this trip.
l am hoping to attend one of the remaining races this year at Martinsville, Darlington or at the Roval.

Yep. You got it.

Haha I've only nearly run out of gas there because for some reason driving from Vegas to Fontana back in 2013 and was like oh well I'll get a gallon or two and make it to Barstow, lol.

Traveling through Texas on I-10 is hit and miss with the gas stations. I'm glad that I insisted on a 32 gallon gas tank when I bought the truck new. A lot of the stations that are listed as being open no longer exist. The GPS is the worst way to find a station because they don't seem to update their data base very often. My Garmin RV GPS is really good but it's no better than it's programmed input. I never let the tank get below a quarter before I stop when in Texas.

My school has recently gotten a partner school in Mongolia and earlier this month I had the chance to travel to Mongolia with 20 other students of my school.
It was the first time I was in Asia and it was a fascinating trip for all of us.

I hope I'll be able to post some pictures later.

Before I forget about it again…
I used my phone for all those pictures so the quality isn't that good.

Has anyone ever used a vacation package site before? Either one that packages together simple things that offers hotel+flight packages or even one that offers tours? If so, what have you used, what was your experience and did you feel like it saved you much money? I've always dreamed of taking a vacation to Canads and dont know whether I should bundle all the expenses together or kind of wing it as I go.

You can find packaged deals affordable and budget ...or fancy. I'd recommend you look into it. It takes a lot stress out of your travel.
