Video Game thread

So, I'm about halfway through Route A (first playthrough) of Nier: Automata, and man, the music is amazing. Like, it may be the absolute best music I've ever heard in a video game. Not gonna post any YouTube videos of it on here since none of them appear to be official videos, but check it out if you get a chance. I'm going to go buy it right now.

I'm probably one of the only people here excited for WWE 2K19 coming out in a few weeks. Already got it pre-ordered, can't wait for Midnight Oct 5th(you know, the second it hits midnight on the 4th and it becomes the 5th lol) as I got the digital deluxe edition, which lets me play 4 days early from the release date of it, which is the 9th...plus since it's digital it will already be downloaded and ready as soon as it hits midnight.
I just bought the Digital Deluxe Edition. Can't wait to play as Kairi, Ronda, and many others!

So, WWE 2K19 can be fun at times, but it's somewhat difficult compared to previous games in the series. I'm having a lot of trouble finding the right gameplay balance with it, and that's frustrating me.

On a whim, I decided to pick up the standard edition of Fire Pro Wrestling World for $37 on sale on the PSN store. Unlike Fire Pro Wrestling Returns, which I bought for my PS3 for $10, I'm actually enjoying it. The graphics and music are better than in Returns (which is understandable, because Returns was a PS2 port). The gameplay is much more simplistic than that of the WWE 2K games, but it's so fun and is actually a lot deeper than it appears to be at first. Downloading custom wrestlers/ring parts in World is just so much easier than in Returns. I already have a nice sized selection of male and female WWE superstars to use.

Supposedly they may eventually allow us to add custom music to the wrestlers' entrances, but I won't hold my breath. Even without that, I can already see myself having a lot of fun with this game.

This thread is quickly turning into my own personal echo chamber, but for anyone who has or decides to buy WWE 2K19, keep in mind that all of the AI reversal sliders in the Game Balancing section work in the exact opposite way that they're supposed to work.

This post on the 2K forums explains it. Basically, until this is patched, setting a higher number value on any given AI reversal slider will make the AI reverse less in that particular situation, not more - and vice-versa.

https://forums.2k.com/showthread.ph...2ebc0fcd35b824cb1a666&p=15139015#post15139015

This knowledge pretty much saved the game for me. I was so happy, I had to register for 2K's forums to thank everybody for discovering it. :lol2:

I haven't really watched wrestling in over 15 years now, but I have WWE 2K17 and it's a pretty decent game, but for whatever reason I have more fun with the old N64 games like WCW/nWo Revenge and WWF War Zone. The last wrestling game I truly enjoyed was WrestleMania X8 on the GameCube. For some reason I can't really get into the next gen wrestling games.

I bought Forza Horizon 4 last week, and it's been a lot of fun, but I hear the online multiplayer is complete garbage and the single player mode doesn't seem like it will hold my attention much longer. There doesn't feel like there's much of a point to it, as far as goals or whatever. Once you unlock the "seasons" there doesn't really seem to be any reward/motivation to keep going.

I'll probably pick up Black Ops 4 soon, and eventually the new NASCAR game too. I rarely play video games these days, but I usually spend more time playing over the winter months.

Yeah, I really liked WWE 2K17. I also loved the AKI/THQ WCW and WWF games on the N64.

If you have a PS4 or play PC games at all (or even if you don't, honestly) you should seriously look into Fire Pro Wrestling World. It's so much fun. In a nutshell, unlike in the 2K games, you pretty much have complete control over your experience with it. It's entirely timing based, not a button masher. It's as easy and simple or difficult and complex as you want it to be, and it is endlessly customizable. The WWE edits that people have up are absolutely on point.

I finally learned how to play WWE 2K19 couple of weeks ago. I've reset all of the sliders back to their defaults and am playing on the hardest difficulty level, Legend. It's pretty fun, and I've had some great matches.

I'm currently rotating between that, Fire Pro Wrestling World, Gran Turismo Sport, and this better than expected little Japanese action RPG, Nights of Azure.

I picked it up on a whim on the PS Store for a little over $20 with a PS Plus discount. I'm a sucker for games with good music and female characters, so it shouldn't really surprise me that I ended up liking this. It's not a super long game (for an RPG), nor is it super difficult (so far, at least), but I'm really digging it. The gameplay isn't anything revolutionary for this genre, but it's not terrible by any means, and the music and story are more than enough to keep me coming back for more. There's mellow, melancholy piano and string music during most of the cutscenes, and then during the battles, you mostly hear symphonic power metal. It's awesome.

The music in this trailer is what initially drew me in. It has a bikini shot for, like, a split second, and it's not remotely worth the click if that's all you're interested in seeing. Still, I'm not getting in trouble. Click the link to watch it on YouTube.

Nights of Azure trailer

I've pretty much finished Nights of Azure. Apparently there's a "true ending" to unlock, which I'll get to doing eventually. After having essentially no real trouble throughout the game, the final boss was, all of a sudden, impossible. I just leveled up a bit more, and that did the trick. I ended up liking the game a lot more than I thought I would. It was $20 well spent.

I grinded the Blue Moon Speedway race in Gran Turismo Sport last weekend to unlock the $20,000,000 Ferrari 330 P4. Yeah, it's a cool car and all, but it's not nearly worth the amount of time that it took to unlock it. That was a huge disappointment.

I ended up re-downloading Assetto Corsa, and after going back and forth with both games this week, I think I'll be playing AC exclusively. GT Sport has a few good tracks that AC doesn't have, is a little more up to date than AC, and is definitely a fun game. AC is just so much more fun for me, though, even with a controller. It feels more like an actual racing simulator and less like a game. Plus, GT Sport takes up way too much hard drive space, so it had to go. I mean, nearly 100 gigs, and I can't even save my progress offline? Really?

I picked up Shadow of the Tomb Raider on sale on the PS Store for $30 with a PS Plus discount. They've got a big Black Friday sale going on.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey is $30 right now too. I was thinking about it, primarily because you can play as a female character, but ehh, I never really got into those games and don't see myself starting now.

NBA 2K19 is also on sale for $30, but I don't know if I'll be buying that since I'm still enjoying 2K18. I don't really follow basketball and am content with the community roster updates in 2K18. I also heard that the AI's defense is tougher in 2K19. Yeah, I think I'm good.

I randomly stumbled upon this charming looking little kart racing game while browsing through the PS Store a couple of weeks ago.

They wanted $30 for it at the time, and I thought that price was a bit too steep, so I held off. Then I bought NASCAR Heat 3 the other day, another more arcade racer as opposed to the sims/simcades I've been playing, and that made me want to get this game even more. The price is possibly still a little steep at $25, but I went ahead and bought it last night.

I've only beaten the first two cups in the career mode, and I expect the AI and tracks to become frustrating as I get further into it. So far, though, it's actually pretty fun and has definitely exceeded my low expectations. Most of the characters are female, which I dig, and it looks and plays like it was made with heart. It's obviously no Mario Kart killer, but I like it.

So, yeah, I'm back on GT Sport exclusively for sim-ish racing. As much as I dislike the "CarPG" aspect of it, I've been doing a lot of longer races lately and turning tire wear and fuel usage on. Neither Project Cars 2 nor Assetto Corsa provide as fun or customizable of an experience for me in that regard as GT Sport does. I love playing around with the fuel management stuff in that game.

I've also found a great game for those times when I just want to unwind, relax, listen to music, and not have to worry about any sort of intense competition: Train Sim World. It's on sale on the PS Store right now for $25. This man, Colonel Failure, convinced me to buy it. His videos are friggin' hilarious. :lol2:

I like how you can cold start the trains and drive them yourself or just be a passenger and ride them, hop between them, walk around the train stations, etc. It's so much fun. Of course, this Northeast Corridor section was a big reason why I bought it, since that train is the only commuter train I've ever been on, and that's where I live. I'll probably pick up the LIRR DLC as well.

I bought Black Ops 4, and it's pretty fun. It feels a lot like the old Black Ops 2 from the 360, which was my favorite COD. Online multiplayer is a lot of fun especially when you're playing in a party with your friends. I don't like the specialists at all, but luckily they don't ruin the gameplay.

I think I'm gonna buy that train sim hahahah

Do it, man. I don't think I would have paid $60 for it on a whim, but for $25, it's definitely worth it. I know absolutely nothing about trains, and I really like it.

The "hardest" part is probably cold starting the trains, but the game walks you through every step (although I believe you can turn those hints off). It's generally just pressing and pulling a bunch of random buttons and levers. Once you get going, it's pretty simple.

If you're on console, there are helpful controller shortcuts for some of your primary functions (throttle and brake power, bell/horn, unlocking and locking doors, etc.).

Sounds kinda lame.... how are the crash physics?

Dude what if I want to simulate train wrecks?

From the little I've seen, you get a quick screenshot of the beginning of the crash, and that's it. I haven't messed with it myself to know for sure.

So I bought it lol. Probably could have not spent that $25 but meh.

So, I just bought Floor Kids a few minutes ago, and it might be the best game I've never heard of.

I've only played the tutorial and the very first stage so far, and I had the absolute biggest grin on my face the entire time. I love everything about this game - the animation, the music, the characters, and the gameplay. It plays like a combination of a rhythm game and SSX. I've never been into rhythm games, but this one is very accessible. It's just such a charming, different, interesting, fun experience. I've heard that the single player story mode is short, but I already consider it to be $20 well spent. It's available on PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and Steam. Check it out!

I've unearthed quite a few games from the last dozen years during the process of picking and choosing what I was going to take with me to my place, and chief among them is Gran Turismo 4 for the PlayStation 2. GT4 is the very game that sparked my interest in cars and racing. I think I might hop on for a bit of nostalgia.

Just bought Wreckfest for XB1, and I'm so glad that I did. This is the most fun I've had with a racing game in years.

So, before yesterday, I hadn't played a Need for Speed game since the original Shift. I've had my eye on Heat for a while, and at first I was going to wait for a sale, but on a whim yesterday, I decided to just take a chance and buy it. I fired it up, and before I knew it, I had put a solid six or seven hours into it. It's so much fun and takes me right back to the Underground 2/Most Wanted days.

I like Heat's progression system/gameplay loop. You can choose to race during the day or at night. You participate in legal races during the day to earn money to buy cars, but the cars have to be unlocked based on your reputation level, which goes up from participating in illegal street races at night and evading the police. Racing at night is a risk/reward deal. As you continue to race on any given night, your heat level will increase, the police chases will get more intense (I've heard that they get pretty ridiculous from levels 3-5), and you'll earn more reputation points. If you get busted, though, you'll actually lose a bunch of reputation points and money.

I also really like that customization isn't only limited to your car. You can choose and customize your character, which for me brings back fond memories of Test Drive Unlimited. That was the biggest reason why I bought Heat and not the much cheaper 2015 reboot or any of the other games that have come out since then. Also, Ana Rivera, who's pretty much your navigator throughout the Fast and the Furious style story mode, is adorable, as is her voice actress and the person her character is loosely based off of, Ana Marte.

The one significant problem for me so far is the fact that the gear shift buttons are mapped to R1 and L1 on PS4, and you can't change the controller layout. This makes using a manual transmission effectively/comfortably pretty much impossible for me. I need those face buttons for that. So, I'll have to run with an automatic, at least for the time being. Hopefully you'll be able to edit the controller layout after a future patch, but if not, it's honestly not the end of the world. Also, there's no ****pit view, which I thought would be a deal-breaker for me, but honestly, for a game like this, it's fine.

Any Assassin's Creed fans here? Just curious about your thoughts on Odyssey. As someone who has played all games in the franchise, I'm very disappointed in this game being about 20 hours into it. Gone is the modern day story which drew me into the series and it is now basically Witcher 3 without the good aspects of that game.

You definitely should if you haven't already.

After getting to rep level 50 (the highest rep level) and playing through the story mode, I have to say, this is definitely one of the best NFS games I've ever played. As I alluded to before, the gameplay loop is incredibly addicting, and the game's just so much fun. Even after beating the main story, there's still so much stuff you can do, like the high heat races that give you the best performance parts.

They even have a few prize cars from previous NFS games that you get through story mode progression - Eddie's Skyline from Underground, Melissa's 350Z from Underground 2, and the BMW M3 GTR from Most Wanted. That M3 might be my favorite car in the game. It sounds amazing and is pretty much worth the price of admission in and of itself.

Heat is pretty much exactly what I wanted The Crew 2 to be. You can play through the whole game online or offline, unlike The Crew 2, which is always online. As someone who doesn't really do online gaming anymore, I really appreciate that.

I'm still loving NFS: Heat. I discovered that drifting is my favorite thing to do once I learned that you have to put drag tires on most of the cars (as opposed to drift or showcase tires) to be able to properly hold your drifts. Much like the rest of the game, that mode is really addicting. I could drift around the practice track in the infield of the speedway all day long.

I picked up a few random RPGs during the Black Friday and year end sales on PSN: Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom and Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet during the Black Friday sale, and Odin Sphere Leifthrasir just now. Ever since I randomly tried the demo for Odin Sphere Leifthrasir a while back, I've been anxiously waiting for it to go on sale. I haven't gotten super far in the other two games yet, but I'm enjoying them both.

I have not played a video game for the past 10 or 12 years but I'm thinking about purchasing one to hook up to my tv. The type of games I would mainly be interested in playing if available would be nascar, sprint cars, indy cars, F-1, drag racing, football, and basketball. I'm just starting to do some research to see what kind of consoles are on the market and what would be the best one to purchase for the games that I'm interested in. I know there are play stations and x-boxes and would love any kind of advice from some of you guys that have been gaming for awhile.

If you have a nice 4k tv, the Xbox One X or ps4 pro would be the way to go. The xbox one x on 4k tv's have really good graphics with the newer games, I have both and enjoy my xbox one x just a little better. The one x can be picked up for around $350 or so. If you don't want to spend that much, the xbox one S is your next choice, or the ps4 slim.

As far as games on the consoles, NASCAR Heat 4 is pretty fun, it has all 3 series, plus dirt late models, you should be able to find it pretty cheap now. Sprint cars there is not much on the newer consoles, same with indycars other than Project Cars 2, IRACING on the computer is where you can find those cars.

F1 racing, F1 2019 is the way to go, those are fun games. Unfortunately no good drag racing stuff, Football, Madden 20, I have it and really like it, good time killer. Basketball, NBA 2k20

Forza Motorsport 7 is another one worth looking into on the xbox, it's a real good racing game. But starting out, I think you might enjoy NASCAR Heat 4 if you can find it cheap, F1 2019, and Madden 20.

So, I've never played any of the Assassin's Creed games, but I just picked up the Ultimate Edition of Odyssey on sale for $30 on PSN, on a whim. We'll see how far I get with it, but having only played it for an hour or two, I'd say that it's off to a decent start. (Naturally, I chose Kassandra as my character.) It reminds me of Horizon Zero Dawn and the recent Tomb Raider games. I'm hoping against hope that it won't have the difficult combat of the former and the unnecessarily violent main character death scenes of the latter.

Thanks for the info that was a lot of help.

Good info. I'm now 60 hours into Odyssey and still contend it is vastly overrated (only about 25% into main story). The map is 3 times bigger than it should be and there is way too much focus on side quests ("completing" areas such as forts) that do nothing but give you XP. This series died after AC 3

If I decide to purchase a monitor instead of using my tv what would be the best screen size for good graphics?
